Final Fantasy XIV is playable on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and also PC. A question that has been going around through these years is that, why is Final Fantasy XIV not available for Xbox? It is available for PC, but not Xbox? One of the highlights of Microsoft’s news at E3 2016 is that cross-platform plays between Xbox One and Windows is now available. Does that mean there is a bigger chance for Final Fantasy XIV to come to Xbox? Naoki Yoshida, the producer/director of Final Fantasy XIV, said yes. For now, it’s only a matter of negotiation with Microsoft.
“Microsoft actually approached the Final Fantasy XIV team about the cross-platform opportunity,” Yoshida told Polygon. “When our team reviewed the regulations that are associated with that, we realized that Microsoft may not have the experience or understanding of running an MMORPG as an online game genre just yet. The Final Fantasy XIV team has fed back to Microsoft that there are certain elements of its regulations that we would have to consider waived. We’re waiting on Microsoft’s response for that, but we are having discussions.”
During the Live Letter at E3 2016, Yoshida mentioned that there will be more features made available in the next expansion. The biggest concern about that is whether the game will still support old console like PlayStation 3 in the next expansion or not, since it takes more time to load than in PlayStation 4 and PC.
“At this point, we’ve already declared that we’ll continue to fully support the PS3 through the 3.x series of patches,” Yoshida said. “That’s about all we can say at this point. If anything changes with that, we’ll be sure to update our players so that they are aware.”
