With December ends, it also marks the closure of the year 2016. Let’s have a brief recap. Earlier in December, we had The Game Awards 2016. Though there were not many RPG that won the award, Pokémon GO managed to win two awards. Also, Atlus announced a new IP which will be neither Persona series nor Shin Megami Tensei series. We have also made lists of top RPGs and VNs that were released this year, and a list of the hottest news that we covered throughout 2016. Check them all out below!

The Game Awards 2016 was held earlier in December, and there are a lot of games that won the award(s). Among the categories available in the awarding event, Pokémon GO was nominated as Best Mobile/Handheld Game and Best Family Game.

Top 10 RPG of 2016We have made a list of our top 10 RPGs that were released in 2016. In terms of RPG, Square Enix and Atlus definitely stole the spotlight for us, especially with the release of the long-awaited Final Fantasy XV globally, and Persona 5’s release in Japan.

Not only that, we also made a list of the top 10 Visual Novel games in 2016. Though there are not as much as RPG, these VN titles that we mentioned in the article are definitely worth trying.

New games announced!

  • Starly Girls: Episode Starsia

Starly Girls

Kadokawa Games announced a new Sci-fi RPG titled Starly Girls: Episode Starsia for both Android and iOS! The game takes place in outer-space, as a lot of girl captains operate their spaceships to explore the dark space! The game is already available since 9th December 2016, in Japan.

Sony announced that their new gaming company label ForwardWorks is making a new Arc the Lad & Wild Arms games for mobile phones (Android & iOS)! Both titles will be worked by the original game’s developers! No release date has been confirmed yet, though.

Here it is, a new Nintendo Switch exclusive RPG Seasons of Heavens! Developed by French indie developer Any Arts Production, the game features a post-apocalytpic world where you will follow the story of Yann and his trusted dog Ani as they embark on the new world. The game itself is still in development

Cladun Returns - This Is Sengoku - Feature

NIS America announced Cladun Returns, a classic RPG with a retro art and nostalgic BGM. The game takes place in a Sengoku era where the player will help each lords to lift their regrets. The game is also equipped with both co-op and versus multiplayer mode! It will be available for PS4, PS Vita, and PC in Spring 2017.

  • Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan

Aurion Legacy of the Kori Odan - Feature

Check out Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan, the first African-themed fantasy RPG by KIRO’O GAMES! Play as Enzo as he and his wife try to restore the land from his brother-in-law! The game is now available for PC through Steam.

  • Rewrite: Ignis Memoria

Rewrite: Ignis Memoria

Key VisualArt reveals that Rewrite: Ignis Memoria is coming for both Android and iOS in Japan! The game is a strategy RPG, where the protagonist Tennouji Kotarou is leading an occult group to enter a dangerous world. No release date has been announced yet.

  • Fairy Elements

Fairy Elements Released

Kemco has released an English version of mobile RPG Fairy Elements for Android! The game features classic RPG adventure that has a special mode for easy grinding. The music is provided by composer Ryuji Sasai, the composer of Final Fantasy Legend III and Final Fantasy Mystic Quest!

Project Re FANTASY - Title

Atlus announced a brand new JRPG title codenamed Project Re FANTASY! While not much information has been revealed yet, we currently know that the game will be developed by a new internal team called Studio Zero and it is created with the intention to provide a “new journey” to players around the world. Hype!

Collector’s Edition announced!

  • Anima: Gate of Memories


NIS America and BadLand Games are partnering to distribute a limited physical edition of Anima: Gate of Memories! It will include the physical PS4 disc, OST, tarot deck, and an art print. It’s available to pre-order now and receive it early in 2017.

Release date revealed!

  • Akiba’s Beat

Akiba's Beat - Key Visual

Release date for PlayStation Vita version of Akiba’s Beat in Japan has finally been revealed! This version of the game will be available for purchase in Japan on March 16, 2017 for 6,696 Yen.

  • Da Capo 3 R

Romance visual novel Da Capo 3 R is expected to release on 20th January, 2016! It will be available for PC through Steam and MangaGamer (Mature version).

  • Danganronpa 1 & 2 Reload

Danganronpa 1&2 - Feature

Spike Chunsoft finally revealed the release date of Danganronpa 1&2 Reload!  It will be available on March 14th, 2017 in North America and on March 17th, 2017 in Europe. The game features a remake of the previous titles: Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair.

  • Dragon Quest Heroes II

Dragon Quest Heroes II western release date is confirmed! Square Enix announced that the game will launch at April 25th in America. Meanwhile, In Europe, it will come in April 28th.

  • NieR: Automata

NieR Automata - Plug-in Chip

Square Enix made an announcement that NieR: Automata will be released in the west on March 7, 2017. The PC release still doesn’t have an exact release date. Meanwhile, check the announcement trailer here!

  • Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley Wii U version cancelled

Stardew Valley, previously released in PC, will come to PS4 and Xbox One. Recently, Stardew Valley release date for those consoles are revealed! December 14th will be the release date! Check the trailer here!

FuRyu announced that their upcoming RPG, The Alliance Alive, gets release date! The Alliance Alive release date is revealed to be on March 30 2017. Check here to get a sneak peek of its pre-order bonus!

  • Legna Tactica

Legna Tactica Western Release

A new strategy RPG, Legna Tactica, is coming to Nintendo 3DS. The game has been available for smartphone since 2015. Legna Tactica western release is also already announced, but release date is yet to be revealed.

  • Nights of Azure & Atelier Sophie

Atelier Sophie

Nights of Azure and Atelier Sophie get PC release! Koei Tecmo recently announced that both will head to Steam on February 2017. Both games previously launched on PlayStation 4 and PS Vita for Atelier Sophie. Watch the two’s announcement trailers here!

Key VisualArts announced the release date for the PS Vita port of the spin-off title Rewrite: Harvest Festa! in Japan! The port is expected to be available on April 2017. Check the trailer and story here!

PS Vita’s Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana is announced for PlayStation 4 in JapanYs VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana will support 4K PlayStation 4. Hence, the game will get many kind of improvements compared to the PlayStation Vita version.

Fantasy Life Online Delayed

Level-5 delayed the release date of Fantasy Life Online. Hence, they postponed the game to April 2017. Also, the reason for this delay is to add extra smoothness to the game online’s aspect.

Unfortunate news for classic RPG fans, Square decided to delay the vita version’s release of Romancing Saga 2. The specific reason for this delay is still unknown, as well as for its specific release date. Thus, you can get more information about this here.

  • Himawari: The Sunflower


Himawari The Sunflower - Feature

Frontwing made an English localization for their visual novel game, Himawari: The Sunflower! And instead of on PC like the original Japanese version, this one will release on PlayStation PortableUnfortunately, there’s no information regarding its specific release date yet.

Beside Himawari: The SunflowerFrontwing also decided to make English localization for their other visual novel game, Island. They told that the game will release in 2017. Moreover, it will also gets an anime adaptation!

  • New Danganronpa V3: Everyone’s New Semester of Murder

Spike Chunsoft give awesome news for Danganronpa fans as they decided to release the game on English! Not to mention the game will change its name to Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony. Furthermore, you can check here along with its awesome character trailer.



RPG updates

  • Final Fantasy XV

Final Fantasy XV - Noctis and the gang

Earlier in December, Square Enix announced that they will be adding a boss fight against Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda into Final Fantasy XV as the game’s special DLC. Director Hajime Tabata also outlined the plans for the free updates that will be made available in 2017, including new playable characters, new story contents, and more. Not only that, Square Enix also shared the details on the stuffs that you can get in the Holiday DLC pack (which is already available by now) as well as details on the first paid DLC, Episode Gladio. Also, you might want to check out the accolades that Final Fantasy XV has obtained since its release in the Official Accolades Trailer.

  • Persona 5

Atlus revealed the story trailer for Persona 5 during PlayStation Experience 2016. As the name suggests, the trailer shows a glimpse of its story. Not only that, Atlus also revealed the trailers introducing the confidants such as Tae, Sojiro, Munehisa, Hifumi, Sadayo, and Toranosuke. Additionally, the company released the English version of the character trailers along with an interview video with the respective characters.

  • Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue

Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue is about to release soon, and Square Enix began to build up the hype by releasing the final trailer of the game, showing a glimpse of each title in the bundle. Not only that, Square Enix also updated the official website of the game with a new batch of screenshots, showing Aqua customization, spectacular magic, and many more.

  • South Park: The Fractured But Whole

Ubisoft released a new trailer for the upcoming South Park: The Fractured But Whole titled “The Coon Conspiracy”, and also announced the collectible figurines that can be purchased via Ubisoft Official Store. Click here to see the detail.

  • NieR: Automata

NieR Automata - Plug-in Chip


Square Enix earlier announced a playable demo of NieR: Automata to release on December 22 (which is already available by now). During a livestream hosted by Dengeki PlayStation, the producers of NieR: Automata from Platinum Games confirmed that the game will get PlayStation 4 Pro support, and revealed more details on the game. This year’s Jump Festa was held in Tokyo in December, and Square Enix announced a new collaboration project between NieR: Automata and Dragon Quest series, adding Cypress Stick into the action RPG. And finally, an issue of Famitsu introduces a character from the game whose name is Anemone.

  • World of Final Fantasy

World of Final Fantasy Will Get Free 'Champion Sora' DLC at January 12 in Japan

Square Enix has announced that Sora from Kingdom Hearts series will be added into World of Final Fantasy as a Champion on January 12 in Japan. As for North America and Europe, this DLC will be available in Winter.

Tales of Berseria Newest Trailer Highlights Velvet Crowe

Bandai Namco has confirmed that the English demo of Tales of Berseria will be released on January 10, 2017. The company also released a new trailer for the game titled “The Calamity and The Blade” in which highlights the main protagonist of the game, Velvet Crowe.

Square Enix released a new trailer for the PlayStation Vita exclusive RPG SaGa Scarlet Grace, showcasing the overview of the game, including the key characters, exploration, battles and more.

NIS America launched a new trailer for the upcoming Touhou Genso Wanderer. The video is titled “Survival Guide Trailer“, and it shows the game’s turn-based battle mechanics.

  • Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMix

Square Enix revealed a new teaser trailer in the livestream from Jump Festa in Tokyo for the compilation game Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMix. The trailer was quite brief, and shows a glimpse of the remastered version of the games for PlayStation 4.

  • Dissidia Final Fantasy

A new playable stage for Dissidia Final Fantasy for Arcade has been added, as announced earlier by Square Enix. The new stage is the Royal City of Rabanastre from Final Fantasy XII.

  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III

Falcom announced that The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III will be an exclusive title for PlayStation 4. Similar to the previous title, the game will still take place in the Erebonian Empire with Rean Schwarzer as the main protagonist.

  • Final Fantasy XIV

Square Enix shared a new batch of screenshots for Final Fantasy XIV, previewing the contents that will be made available later in the upcoming patch 3.5 The Far Edge of Fate part 1, which will launch on January 17, 2017. On the other note, producer and director Naoki Yoshida has confirmed Red Mage as the new job, as well as other exciting contents for the new expansion Stormblood during the opening keynote of the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in Tokyo. Letter from the Producer LIVE was held after the opening keynote, announcing a collaboration between Garo and Final Fantasy XIV.

The new IP called Project Re FANTASY that Atlus announced earlier already has its first teaser trailer. The teaser does not show any of the gameplay, but it determines what kind of mood that the title has to offer.

  • Justice Monsters Five

Apparently, Justice Monsters Five does not seem to have performed really great, unlike the main title in which this game is a part of: Final Fantasy XV. As a result, Square Enix announced that Justice Monsters Five will be shut down on March 27, 2017.

Final Fantasy Awakening has entered the open beta phase in China, and MMO Culture managed to record the gameplay, showing a glimpse of well-known characters like Ace, Rem, Cinque, Sice, and Eight, along with some original characters.

We have some updates here on the upcoming Dragon Quest XI. First off, Square Enix introduces the new characters, explorations, and more with trailers, and also confirmed that the game will be available for Nintendo Switch as well. After that, an issue of Jump magazine lets you know more about the characters, world, and combat. Finally, Square Enix released some screenshots of the game, showing the characters, and the world.

Gaming event

  • Final Fantasy Series


Square Enix will make an event for one of the most popular RPG game series, Final Fantasy‘s 30th anniversary! They will call the event with Final Fantasy 30th Anniversary Opening Ceremony and will hold at TOHO Cinemas venue within the Roppongi Hills complex in Roppongi, Tokyo, on January 31.  What’s more, the Brand Manager of Final FantasyShinji Hashimoto will be hosting the presentation!




  • NieR: Automata

One of the most promising game of Square Enix, NieR: Automata will get a 2B Parka Jacket as well as NieR Music Concert and Talk Live Blu-ray. Moreover, they will also get two guidebooks. You can get further details here.

After creating theme songs for Kingdom Hearts I and Kingdom Hearts II, famous Japanese singer and song-writer, Utada Hikaru is rumored to contribute for Kingdom Hearts III as well!
