Hello, everyone. How’s your August? Was it great? In the gaming world, August was (quite) awesome. There was Gamescom 2016, which was a blast, Final Fantasy XIV celebrates its 3rd anniversary, and many more. Here’s our monthly recap for August 2016.



Special highlight

  • Final Fantasy XV

Final Fantasy XV English Voice Cast Noctis

One of the most impactful news that happened within August is when Square Enix asked fans to wait a little longer as the release date of Final Fantasy XV is–unfortunately–delayed. The game, which was initially planned to release on September 30 this year, was pushed back to November 29.

New games announced!

  • Blue Reflections: Sword of the Girl Who Dances in Illusion

Blue Reflections Feature

Gust announced a Sailor Moon-esque RPG titled Blue Reflections: Sword of the Girl Who Dances in Illusion. The game is about a girl who was granted mystical power by two mysterious girls, allowing her to transform into a “Reflector”. She hopes that she will be able to dance again someday.

  • Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia

Dissidia Final Fantasy - Opera Omnia

In the recent livestream, Square Enix announced Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia for smartphone, a mobile adaptation of Dissidia Final Fantasy, featuring various characters across the series.

  • Granblue Fantasy Project Re: Link

Together with Platinum Games, Cygames is developing Granblue Fantasy Project Re: Link, a 3D action RPG. The company stated that the game is 10% complete.

  • Imprisoned Palm

Imprisoned Palm

Capcom announced a visual novel game for iOS and Android in Japan, titled Imprisoned Palm. See the trailer and more details of the game by clicking here.

  • Monster Hunter Frontier Z

Capcom brings the latest installment of the online RPG Monster Hunter Frontier series to PlayStation 4. The latest installment is titled Monster Hunter Frontier Z.

  • Narcissu: 10th Anniversary Anthology

  • Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon

Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon was announced in an issue of Dengeki Online. This sequel of Nights of Azure will be available for PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita in Japan on December 22.

  • Princess Connect Re: Dive

After having succeeded with Princess Connect, Cygames revealed at Cygames Next 2016 that they plan to release another anime RPG titled Princess Connect Re: Dive for smartphone.

  • Princess Is Money-Hungry

Nippon Ichi Software announced its newest RPG earlier in August for PlayStation Vita. The title of this RPG is Princess Is Money-Hungry, or Princess ha Kane no Mouja in Japanese.

  • Puyo Puyo Chronicle

Puyo Puyo Chronicle to celebrate the series’ 25th anniversary

Sega announced the puzzle RPG Puyo Puyo Chronicle in order to celebrate the series’ 25th anniversary. Click here to see the details.

  • Ragnarok Clicker

The famous MMORPG Ragnarok celebrated its 12th anniversary back in June, and the developer Gravity Interactive announced a clicker RPG Ragnarok Clicker as a spin-off title. Check out the details here.

Kadokawa Games announced an RPG-making game titled RPG Maker Fes for Nintendo 3DS. The game is due out in Japan on November 24. See the full details of the game here.

  • World Chain

World Chain is a time-travelling RPG by Sega. This game is a tower defense game for smartphone. The game is due out this fall in Japan for iOS and Android.

  • Azure Saga: Pathfinder

Masshive Media, an indie developer from Bandung, Indonesia showcased Azure Saga: Pathfinder at Popcon Asia 2016, an annual pop culture convention. The game itself is an isometric view exploration RPG developed for iOS and Android.

  • Lonely Star

Lonely Star Title

Lonely Star is a 2D indie RPG by Matt Judge for PC. It is an open-ended action combining with survival skills, exploration, stealth, combat and corn farming. See the full details here.

  • Memory’s Dogma

Memory's Dogma Feat

Sekai Project is releasing a new visual novel titled Memory’s Dogma. It is a sci-fi adventure indie visual novel with lots of interesting ending as usual.

  • Yume no Sono

Visual Novel - Yume No Sono Logo

Another indie visual novel title was announced by Sekai Project. This one is called Yume no Sono in Japanese or Garden of Dreams in English. The game is set to release in 2017 for PC. Click here to see the full details of the game.

Fruitbat Factory is releasing a visual novel game on Steam. The title is Miniature Garden. This game is a combination of moe character and death. See the full details here.

  • Office Lovers

Office Lovers

D3 Publisher releases a visual novel Office Lovers. This is a game where you will have a secretive romance with several handsome men in Viola Cosmetic Company. They come from different level and department.

  • Fatal Twelve

Fatal Twelve

Sekai Project is going to publish a new mystery visual novel from Aikueokompany, Fatal Twelve. This game has a very interesting storyline.

  • Enigma:

Enigma: Feature

Fruitbat Factory announced Enigma: is coming for PC via Steam this Winter! This is a mystery visual novel in which a mysterious disease called Enigma is spreading in the world.

  • Re: Zero – Death or Kiss

Re: Zero Feat

The popular manga series Re: Zero is getting a visual novel adaptation by 5pb. The visual novel is titled Re: Zero – Death or Kiss, will be available for PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita.

Limited Run Games announced that they’ll release physical copies of Mystery Chronicle: One Way Heroics. This might sound ordinary, but actually it is special because the game was initially planned to release digitally. The physical copy of the game is very limited so, be sure to get one.

  • Steins; Gate 0

Steins; Gate 0

Steins; Gate 0 gets digital exclusive Amadeus Collector’s Edition as revealed by Rice Digital. It will be available for both Playstation 4 and Playstation Vita.

  • Summon Night 6: Lost Borders

After receiving the overwhelming response from fans, publisher Gaijinworks finally decided to release a Wonderful Edition of Summon Night 6: Lost Borders for PlayStation Vita.

Smilegate announced the western release date of Qurare: Magic Library, a card battle RPG for PlayStation 4. The game is already available for iOS and Android. Qurare: Magic Library will release on September 6 in the west for PlayStation 4.

  • Superdimension Neptune VS Sega Hard Girls

The western release date for Superdimension Neptune VS Sega Hard Girls has been revealed by Idea Factory International. The game is due out in North America on October 18, and in Europe on October 21. Click here to see the full report.

  • Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization

Bandai Namco revealed the release date for Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization. The game will be released on November 8 in North America and Europe. The pre-order bonus was also revealed alongside with the announcement.

  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II

XSEED Games has announced the western release date for The Legend of the Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II. The game is set to release on September 6 In North America and September 11 in Europe. See the full details here.

  • Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: All-Star Carnival

Another arcade game from Square Enix gets a release date in Japan. The game is Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: All-Star Carnival. This is the third installment of Theatrhythm Final Fantasy series, and it is due out on September 27 in Japan.


  • Dragon Quest X

Dragon Quest X

Dragon Quest X is already available for PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo 3DS, Wii, Wii U, and also Android. Producer Yosuke Saito and director Chikara Saito announced that the game will also be available for Nintendo NX as an addition to the list.

  • Dragon Quest XI

Not only Dragon Quest X, Dragon Quest XI is reported to make its way to Nintendo NX. This information was confirmed by Horii-san in the previous discussion panel in an issue of Nintendo Dream.

  • NieR: Automata

The director of the series Yoko Taro announced at Gamescom 2016 that NieR: Automata will also be available for PC. This makes the game is no longer a PlayStation exclusive title.

  • Ray Gigant


One of PlayStation Vita‘s exclusive dungeon crawler JRPG titled Ray Gigant is finally no longer exclusive, as it is heading towards PC via Steam. Check out the coverage here.

  • Steins; Gate

The time-traveling visual novel Steins; Gate English version is going to be released for iOS in September. 5pb executive director, Chiyomaru Shikura announced it on Twitter.

  • Valkyria: Azure Revolution

Sega announced that Valkyria: Azure Revolution will be available for PlayStation Vita, making the title is no longer a PlayStation 4 exclusive title.



Important RPG updates

  • Akiba’s Beat

Akiba's Beat - Title

Acquire released the remainders of the character trailers of Akiba’s Beat in August: Kotomi Sanada, Reiji Shinomiya, and Mizuki Aihara. Not only that, the company also shared more details on some characters and first-print bonuses.

  • Atelier Firis


Dengeki PlayStation revealed some new characters for the upcoming game from Gust Corporation Atelier Firis. There will be four new characters added into the game are Kald Lau, Kirsche Litter, Kai Holthaus, and Mea Holthaus.

  • Demon Gaze 2

Kadokawa Games has revealed that there will be dating system and maintenance system in Demon Gaze 2. The company even released a new trailer for the game showing how the dating system works in the game.

  • Dissidia Final Fantasy

In the recent livestream, Square Enix announced that Ace from Final Fantasy Type-o will be the next addition to the roster of Dissidia Final Fantasy for Arcade. The company also added new contents such as a new stage and alternate costumes for the playable characters, known as 2nd form.

  • Dragon Ball: Fusions

Dragon Ball: Fusions is the game where you can see the weirdest fusion combination in the franchise. Vegeta does a fusion dance with Yamcha? Why not? Bandai Namco released a trailer showing the Time Trial, and also a TV commercial showing the gameplay and the fusion overview.

  • Final Fantasy XIV

Final Fantasy XIV celebrated the seasonal event Moonfire Faire earlier in August. Also, in the celebration of the MMORPG’s 3rd anniversary, the team held a 14-hour broadcast, and also an in-game event. The team also held the Live Letter session during the broadcast, shared the first details of patch 3.4 Soul Surrender.

  • Final Fantasy XV

Final Fantasy XV Season Pass Upgrade

Even though the game is delayed, nothing stops Square Enix to add more content to Final Fantasy XV. The company revealed a season pass for the game. The game also appears to be open-world in the first half, and linear in the second half.

  • God Eater 2: Rage Burst

  • Gurumin 3D

New trailer for Gurumin 3D: A Monstrous Adventure was revealed. Known simply as Gurumin 3D, it is a 3DS port of the classic action-adventure RPG Gurumin: A Monstrous Adventure, Falcom‘s game which was released on Windows PC and PlayStation Portable.

  • Idol Death Game TV

D3 Publisher revealed a trailer for the action-adventure mixed with visual novel style idol raising game known as Idol Death Game TV. The trailer shows more about the gameplay.

  • Mobius Final Fantasy

  • Monster Hunter Stories

Capcom released a bunch of new trailers introducing the monsters that are available as Otomons, such as Deviljho, and Stygian Zinogre in Monster Hunter Stories. There’s also another trailer showing the exploration in the game.

  • Nioh

Koei Tecmo released a new trailer for the dark samurai RPG Nioh at Gamescom 2016. The game itself is a PlayStation 4 exclusive title.

  • Persona 5

Atlus released a bunch of new trailers showing activities that can be done in the game, like dating with Futaba. There is also a trailer that showcased the all-out attack in the game. The company also shared more details on the fusion mechanic.

  • Pokémon GO

Since early August, Pokémon GO is finally available across Asia, as announced by Niantic Labs through its official Facebook page.

  • Pokémon Sun and Moon

Some of the 1st generation Pokémons’ Alolan form like Vulpix, Sandshrew, Exeggutor and many more were revealed. Not only that, Team Skull and some other new Pokémons were revealed as well. The company also introduced a complementary device for the game called the Z-rings, and also the Rite of the Island challenge feature.

  • Pokémon Uranium

After 9 years of development, Pokémon Uranium was finally released. However, the developer received a takedown notice from Nintendo, and thus, the download link was taken down.

  • Ray Gigant

Ray Gigant is now available on PC via Steam. In the celebration of the game’s release, Steam released a bunch of screenshots of Ray Gigant.

  • SaGa Scarlet Grace

SaGa Scarlet Grace - Title

Square Enix announced SaGa Scarlet Grace for PlayStation Vita last year. The series’ creator mentioned that all sorts of information concerning this upcoming game will be revealed at Tokyo Games Show 2016 later.

  • South Park: The Fractured But Whole

At Gamescom 2016 earlier, Ubisoft shared a new trailer for the upcoming South Park: The Fractured But Whole. Not only that, the team also brings virtual reality to the next level with Nosulus Rift.

Bandai Namco released some new TV commercials highlighting Velvet and Eizen from Tales of Berseria. Not only that, Bandai Namco also shared the third batch of costume DLC for the game. Additionally, the company also released a demo for the game in Japan earlier in August, and the game is now available in Japan. A few days prior to the game’s release date, the opening cinematic was leaked online.

  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Dawn


Falcom shared the first gameplay trailer for their upcoming online RPG, The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Dawn. In the trailer, they introduce us to Nacht Weiss and Chloe Barnett, two main protagonists that will be available in the game.

  • Tokyo Xanadu eX+

Falcom revealed the box art for the upcoming Tokyo Xanadu eX+, and also the upgraded gameplay and new playable characters for the game.

XSEED Games’ upcoming horror visual novel Corpse Party for Nintendo 3DS got a new trailer, showing the game’s gameplay.

  • Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice

Capcom’s Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice got an animated prologue and also a demo. Not only that, the company also introduced some new characters to the game: Rayfa Padma Khura’in, Maya Fey, Athena, and many more.

Steins; Gate is getting a port to PC via Steam on September 9. The announcement came along with a trailer for the game. This visual novel game was awarded Famitsu magazines coveted annual Game of Excellence award and was voted one of the most emotionally charged “tear-inducing games” ever made.
