First launched back in 2014 in Japan, Nintendo announced that the production of the standard New Nintendo 3DS in Japan is being discontinued. The reason is because people tend to go for the XL variant instead of the regular-sized one. Additionally, the discontinuation is occurring in the Europe as well, due to the similar reason, as confirmed by Nintendo in GameSpot’s report.
Even so, it does not indicate that the era of Nintendo 3DS is close to its end. They even announced New Nintendo 2DS XL, which is the same as its 3DS version minus the 3D feature. The 2DS XL is already available in Japan, and is coming to the west on July 28.
