If you are a fan of Final Fantasy series, you must be very familiar with this yellow-ish bird-like creature, Chocobo. Ever since in the PS One era, Chocobo has its own spinoff games to comply the fan’s desire to play as this cute animal. In March 20, 2019, Square Enix decided to remaster one of the best Chocobo’s dungeon-crawler game ever on Nintendo Switch. Here is all what you want to know about Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon: Every Buddy! Review.
Yeah. Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon: Every Buddy! is a remaster from its original game entitled, Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo’s Dungeon on Wii and DS. Since it is a remastered game, Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon offers no less but improvements to the features in it to make the players have better experience playing the game.
- System : Switch, Playstation 4
- Release Date : March 20, 2019
- Developer/Publisher : Square Enix
- Main Series : Final Fantasy/Chocobo’s Dungeon
In Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon, the story starts with Chocobo and Cid, the adventurer, searching for treasure. Both of them get sucked into a portal created by a mysterious gem. They, somehow, land in Lostime, a mysterious town with a giant clock tower that has the ability to wipe the memory of the townsfolk. You, for this reason, have to bring back the people’s memories and unveil the mystery of Lostime town.
Honestly, I feel like the story in Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon is not the most appealing part of the game. Even though the development of the story is fairly interesting, the narrative is quite simple and undisguised.
The Characters, on the other hand, are able to charm my interest towards the game. With catchy designs and cheering dialogue, the characters successfully put a smile on my face in many moments in the game. I am pretty sure you will love how the characters differ to each other with their own appealing traits.
As a dungeon crawler game, this game offers what the roguelike mystery dungeon genre fans have to desire. For me, there are numerous features that rich the gameplay of Chocobo Mystery Dungeon. The number of enemies is huge. Also, there is buddy point that can make us recruit the monsters as our companion.
In terms of control, I feel the game offers many simplicity and easiness. The enemies will not attack unless I poke their belly first. Also, I can manage to change direction or decide the right spell to use without wasting the turn and/or being hit by monsters. I just feel no botheration with the control in Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon.
As the player, you can alter the Chocobo’s job to whatever you like to and suits it to your play style. There is some gap though on the quality of each job, I feel. Also the mechanic on how the job levels up is kind of randomized because the job exp dropped by the enemy is not fixed. With cute graphic, the game does not share the same cuteness on the difficulty. At some point of the game, I feel like I am playing Dark Souls and reach my peak of temper. Well, of course I exaggerate it but still the game is not as easy as I expected.
The graphic is really smoothing my eyes when I play the game. The music is also very soothing. But, as a hardcore Final Fantasy fan, I feel a bit weirded out when I hear the notable tone of other games in Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon. Though, it does not impact the beauty of the melody that refines the atmosphere of the place.
Overall, Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon: Every Buddy! is worth to play with rich contents for the fans of roguelike dungeon crawler genre. About the graphic, it is a bit outdated but still good enough. The difficulty might be a little harmful at some point, but very possible to beat. The job system is also possible to get some improvements. For Final Fantasy fans and newcomers from the same genre, with no doubt, you should try this adorable yet challenging game.
