Amnesia is a Japanese visual novel series by Idea Factory. It was first released on August 18, 2011 for PlayStation Portable, than PlayStation Vita and PC version released in 2013 with title Amnesia: Memories. Amnesia is an otome game, like most otome games, the player takes the role of a female character getting amnesia and losing all recollection of her current status, She must focuses on the actions and decisions the heroine has to make in order to retrieve the memories. I played this on Playstation Vita.

You can watch the trailer below

A story that takes place in a fictional world. It was the 1st of August. That morning, when she awoke, the heroine found herself without any memories from before August 1st. Everything, from the sort of life she lived, to the relationships she had, was a blank.

A young boy named Orion appeared in front of her, referring to himself as a “spirit.” Under Orion’s guidance, the heroine began the struggle to regain her memories. She searched her house for clues about her everyday life, and received a message on her phone. What was displayed on the screen was an unknown name to her.

Now, she is asked to meet with him, a boyfriend whose name and face she doesn’t know.
In a position where who to trust is uncertain, the heroine must move in a way that her memory
loss remains undetected by her partner. Because of this, the story becomes tangled in complex ways. With no memories of “him,” our heroine will write a new love story starting today.

The story mixed romance with mystery and supernatural. Each route has different background story one of another, like parallel world. I thought it would be interesting that way but it bored me. The story at beginning almost the same for each story, the heroine searching her own identity and Orion gave her warning about trusting people.

Score: 3

As she investigates her room and the people connected to her, she comes to know various information about herself, such as her life as a student, or that she has a part-time job.

A young man who abruptly gives a kiss to the heroine after she wakes up in a hospital bed.
He is apparently her childhood friend and lover. Having had others distance themselves because
his father had committed murder, Shin is colder than is normal for his age. It’s rare for him
to become emotional, but he shows a deep affection towards those he considers close.

A young man with an idol-like popularity, who is also the heroine’s lover. Ikki has a unique condition that makes women fall in love with him when they look into his eyes. Having given up on having a true relationship, he lives life as a playboy college student, indulging himself in transient pleasures. His interest in the heroine is largely due to his “eyes” not working on her.

The heroine’s rather brusque boyfriend, a mathematics graduate student who always tries to take a bird’s-eye view of matters. He has a tendency to take amusement in phenomena that can’t be clearly explained by logic. The people around him, along with their emotions, are subjects of his observation. For Kent, even love is something that needs to be explained with logic.

When the heroine wakes, she finds herself collapsed on an unfamiliar road. She sees Toma beside her as he whispers, “I will protect you.” Toma has been steadily watching the Heroine from a close distance in an older brother-like fashion. His desire to protect and love the heroine are extremely strong, to the point that his mental state sometimes becomes unstable.

A strange young man who unexpectedly appears everywhere. He gives the heroine mysterious warnings, then vanishes.Whether he wants to protect the heroine or harm her is unclear.

Orion will act as reliable support, sometimes lending advice, sometimes chiming in with witty commentary. He may be trapped within the heroine’s mind, but he possesses some convenient spirit traits, such as the ability to freely cut off his feeling of sensation, or being able to hear her thoughts.

I like the main male characters design, just the face part though all their clothes design were really weird for me. It’s just like out of place. Contrary, all female designs were great both their face and clothes. But out of their design, I don’t really like any of these characters personality. It’s not bad but it just none of them impressed me.

Score: 3

Your choices were really important to reach any possible ending. To make your main suspicious that heroine had amnesia in the beginning would lead you to bad ending. Until she regains her memories, the heroine’s choices will become her main way of asserting herself. Try to choose the best option by predicting the person’s response and your relationship up to this point.

To know you got right choice, you could see parameters in the menu. You could see three kinds bar parameter. They will increase or decrease depending on the heroine’s choices.

The amount of affection the heroine has for the current target. The higher this number is, the better the possibility of reaching a Good Ending.

When the heroine’s relationship with her target gets better, this parameter goes up. When it gets worse, it goes down. This number represents how favorable the relationship is in areas separate from romance.

This amount rises every time the target suspects the heroine has lost her memory.
The higher this parameter is, the more possible it is that you will achieve a Bad Ending.

It was good to see we has good track to reach good ending with these parameter but it really hassle to see the parameter after choosing. Not all choices was affected the parameter, though. You must really careful with choices, because the it has many bad endings.

Score: 3

Graphic and Sound

What made me interested in Amnesia was the beauty of characters designs. The background not beautiful as well though but the CG art was better. The music was good but it’s not memorable for me, the ending theme song was the same for all ending and it get boring because I watched it 5 times. The voice acting without doubt was really amazing, it really fit the characters well.

Score: 3

Additional Appeal

Each I got one characters ending, new scenario would unlocked. These supplemental stories share more about each target character and allow you to understand events from his point of view. If you fulfill certain requirements, a rose icon will be displayed on the upper-right side of picture thumbnails within the Gallery. If you touch pictures that have a rose icon, depending on the touched area, voice clips will play that give the effect of having physical contact.

And also this Otome visual novel had mini game, not only one but two. Rock-Paper-Scissors and Air Hockey. Your opponent would be the main male characters. These mini games were so easy with touch controller.

Score: 4

Replay Value

Amnesia has 4 main routes (with one secret route) and each route has Normal ending, Good ending and bunch of bad ending. It almost ridiculous that this game has 16 bad ending in total and the ending bad title was better than good ending’s. So it really necessary to had many saves and replay to open all possible choices and ending.

Score: 2

+Each route has their own story

+ Beautiful CG Art

– The story was boring in the beginning (for each route)

– Too many typo

I don’t play many Otome games before this. I interested in this game because I love Idea Factory design character. This is better than other Otome because I like when Heroine speak although she spoke briefly in the beginning. Even this is ot the best romance story I ever seen but this still good for Otome game lover.

Amnesia: Memories already released in US region for PlayStation 3, PS Vita, PC

A JRPG lover but like another genre as long as it's fun and easy to play.
