The Tales series or also known in Japan as the Tales of series, is a franchise of RPG published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, and developed by Namco Tales Studio until 2011 and presently by Bandai Namco. As we all know, Tales series bring a total action-RPG gameplay where our character’s action would be slashing, thrusting, punching, or kicking instead of waiting for turns.
Firstly started in 1995 with Tales of Phantasia for the Super Famicom, the series currently spans into sixteen main titles, several spin-off games, and supplementary media in the form of manga and anime series. But now let us focus more on the gaming side, since there a lot of Tales series games worth playing. Here are the top 7 Tales series games so far.
7. Tales of Phantasia
Tales of Phantasia is the first installment of the Tales series which was released in 1995. Firstly made for SNES, Tales of Phantasia successfully caught the attention of gamer. Not long after its release, Tales of Phantasia became popular and was known for a unique kind of RPG which can push the classic console to the limit. The popularity made the developer of this game decided to re-port it in later console.
The story begins with a battle of the four heroes with the evil Dhaos. They actually won the battle, but unfortunately Dhaos has succeeded to escape through time. Then another four unknown heroes succeeded to seal Dhaos using mysterious pendants. Cress Albane and his companions are the next heroes who bear the burden to defeat Dhaos once again.
6. Tales of Graces
Tales of Graces is a Japanese RPG released for the Wii on December 10, 2009 in Japan. This game was a core product of the Tales series and was developed by Namco Tales Studio. On December 2, 2010 Tales of Graces was ported (under the title of Tales of Graces F) to PlayStation 3 in Japan. Tales of Graces is the twelfth mothersip title in the Tales series.
Tales of Graces takes place in a world known as Ephinea and follow Asbel Lhant, the main protagonist. During his childhood, Asbel befriend with an amnesiac girl and unfortunately witness her death. Surprisingly, seven years later he reunited with the girl who retains her amnesia. Together with his companions, Asbel become a hero who will save the world and his kingdom from destruction.
5. Tales of Xillia
Tales of Xillia is a Japanese RPG released exclusively for the PlayStation 3 in 2011. Tales of Xillia is the core product of the Tales series and developed by Namco Tales Studio with Namco Bandai Games as the publisher. Tales of Xillia is the thirteenth mothership title in the Tales series. The game’s musics are still composed by Motoi Sakuraba, as well as in some other Tales series.
Tales of Xillia takes place in a fictional world called Rieze Maxia where humans and ethereal spirits live in harmony. The game begins with the choice of following either Jude Mathis or Milla Maxwell, who elude government official after sabotaging a weapon of mass destruction known as the Lance of Kresnik. Together with their companions, they fought to bring peace back to the world.
4. Tales of Berseria
Tales of Berseria is a Japanese RPG developed and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. Released in 2016, this game was made for Tales series’ fans who owned PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and Mincrosoft Windows. Tales of Berseria is the sixteenth mothership title in the Tales series and also a prequel of Tales of Zestiria. The game revolves around the conflict between emotion and reason.
Tales of Berseria takes place in a world called Desolation, specifically in the Holy Midgand Empire, a powerful country that rules over Desolation’s archipelago of a continent (the game’s world is shared with Tales of Zestiria). Throughout the empire, a disease known as Daemonblight causes humans to turn into a monster. The hero, Velvet Crowe has the task to save the world with her possessed arm.
3. Tales of the Abyss
Tales of the Abyss is another Japanese RPG from Namco Tales Studio and published by Namco in Japan, December 2005 (October 2006 in North America). This game was originally made for PlayStation 2, but later it is also released for 3DS. Tales of the Abyss is the eighth mosthership title in the Tales series and the tenth anniversary title. The game features musics by Motoi Sakuraba.
Tales of the Abyss focuses on Luke fon Fabre, a young swordsman whose pampered life turns upside down when he becomes the target of the military-religious organization known as the Order of Lorelei. Together with his companions, he attempts to discover the truth and significance of his own birth, as well as unravel the mystery of The Score, the prophecy that bounds humanity for thousand of years.
2. Tales of Vesperia
Tales of Vesperia is another Namco Tales Studio’s Japanese RPG which was originally released for Xbox360 in 2008. This game is the tenth mothership title in the Tales series and features a new version of the series’ trademark action-based Linear Motion Battle System, while also introducing another new element such as online scoring boards.
Tales of Vesperia is set in the world of Terca Lumireis, which uses an energy source called blastia for all its needs, including creating protective barriers around its cities. The story focuses on Yuri Lowell, a former Imperial Soldier who forms a guild called Brave Vesperia to aid Estelle, a noble woman he encounters on a mission. As they explore the world, Yuri is forced to confront his friend and former comrade Flynn.
1. Tales of Symphonia
Tales of Symphonia is a Japanese RPG released for Nintendo GameCube on August 29, 2003 in Japan. Published by Namco, this game has become the core product of the Tales series and the fifth main game of the series (eleventh game released in total). Tales of Symphonia is also the third game to be released in North America.
Tales of Symphonia follows the adventures of Lloyd Irving as he and his friends work to help Colette Brunel regenerate the world. This title brought the Tales series a new battle system in 3D, in which the player-controlled character moves on a 2D plane, except when physically attacking an enemy located off the plane. It is also the first title in the Tales series to feature alternate costumes for the main protagonists.
Tales series has never ceased to astonish and spoil its fans with the great gameplay and nice graphics. Tales of Eternia was my first Tales series that I have played, but unfortunately it isn’t included in the list above. If I have to choose, maybe I will choose Tales of Phantasia with its breakthrough, where RPG with the same gameplay for SNES back then is very rare.
