Star Ocean series began its first step in the RPG world in 1996 with its first game Star Ocean. The franchise developed by tri-Ace and published and owned by Square Enix (formerly Enix). Since its first game, this series never cease to amaze us with the gameplay and breakthrough in every title. 7. Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness (PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4)
Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness is an action RPG developed by tri-Ace and published by Square Enix for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. The game is the fifth major installment in the Star Ocean series after Star Ocean: The Last Hope. The battle system is similar to the other games in the Star Ocean series, with the player controlling one of seven party members in battle.
Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness takes place is S.D 537 (A.D 2623), between Star Ocean: The Second Story and Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, the second and the third games in the main Star Ocean series. The game is set on the planet Faykreed, 6000 light years from Earth and tells the story about Fidel Camuze who tries to defend his home village from the attack of a more advanced space-traveling race.
6. Star Ocean: Blue Sphere (Game Boy Color)
Star Ocean: Blue Sphere is an action RPG developed by tri-Ace and published by Enix for the Game Boy Color handheld video game console in 2001. The game is a spin-off entry in the Star Ocean series, acting as a direct sequel to the 1998 PlayStation title Star Ocean: The Second Story. Star Ocean: Blue Sphere was later remade for mobile devices, releasing in 2009.
Star Ocean: Blue Sphere is set two years after the events of Star Ocean: The Second Story on the planet Edifice, a world currently in a pre-space flight state but holding remnants of an advanced civilization. Protagonists from the events of Star Ocean: The Second Story are brought down onto the planet by an unknown force, and must work to discover its source and leave.
5. Star Ocean: The Last Hope (PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PC)
Star Ocean: The Last Hope is an action RPG developed by tri-Ace and published by Square Enix for Xbox 360 in 2009. The game is the fourth installment of the Star Ocean series. In 2010, an international version titled Star Ocean: The Last Hope International was released for PlayStation 3. A remastered version titled Star Ocean: The Last Hope – 4K and Full HD Remaster was released in 2017 for PlayStation 4 and PC.
The game takes place a few centuries before the original Star Ocean and takes place on Earth in S.D 0010 (A.D 2096) where the world is on the brink of destruction. The story begins with Edge Maverick and his childhood friend Reimi Saionji assigned as crew members on board the Calnus and crash-lands on a mysterious planet, finding a large monster materializes from a meteor fragment.
4. Star Ocean: First Departure (Switch, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 4)
Star Ocean: First Departure is a remake of the series’ original game Star Ocean which was developed by tri-Ace and published by Square Enix. The game was originally released for the PlayStation Portable system and the fifth Star Ocean games to be released. An enhanced port titled Star Ocean: First Departure R was released for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in 2019.
3. Star Ocean (Super Famicom)
Star Ocean is an action RPG developed by tri-Ace and published by Enix for Super Famicom in 1996. The game is the first game in the Star Ocean series and was released only in Japan. Star Ocean is the first game to be developed by tri-Ace, consisting of staff that had previously left Wolf Team. The game used a special compression chip in its cartridge to compress and store all of the game’s data.
The story involves three friends: Roddick, Millie, and Dorne who, while searching for the cure to a new disease, come into contact with a space-faring federation that is locked in a war with another galactic power. Using advanced technologies and time travel, the group attempts to uncover the cause of the war and to find a cure for their planet.
2. Star Ocean: The Second Story (PlayStation)
Star Ocean: The Second Story is the second installment of the Star Ocean series made for PlayStation in 1998. Although it has been ported to some platforms, this amazing game started its debut in the classic console such as PlayStation. This game gives the player a choice to play as Claude C. Kenny or Rena Lanford (the two main protagonists) with all its consequences to the story in-game.
This game gives different sensation in playing RPG where you choose which character’s scenario you will play on; resulting in different possibility of recruitable characters. Star Ocean: The Second Story has the real-time combat system that tri-Ace is famous for, and making it as a pioneer of the modern RPG’s real-time battle system. This game is one of tri-Ace’s most critical and commercial successes.
1. Star Ocean: Till the End of Time (PlayStation 2, PlayStation 4)
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time is the third main game of the Star Ocean series which was developed by tri-Ace and published by Square Enix for PlayStation 2 in 2003. Nobody has questioned tri-Ace’s quality since the first Star Ocean game made in 1996. The graphics, the gameplay, and especially the battle system astonished the players ever since the beginning up to this third main title.
The game starts with Fayt Leingod, the main protagonist having vacation on a giant spaceship. Later, he was forced to escape through an escape pod when the ship was attacked and ended up in an underdeveloped planet. His story continues until one day he learned that outside of their 3D world they live in, there were 4D beings in the fourth dimension that they have to defeat to protect their own existence.

Star Ocean series is one of the few best and consistent series aside from the popular Tales series. The games might be not as many as the other series, but if you followed since the beginning you will find quality over quantity. And speaking about a favorite, I will choose Star Ocean: The Second Story as the first Star Ocean game I played, and maybe Star Ocean: Till the End of Time for the 2nd place.
