Because of its influence in RPG scene, many players seek RPG with the same gameplay and quality as the Persona series. Although not identically the same, I present you these top 7 RPG similar to Persona series, in case you have finished the Persona games and need a replacement with similar gameplay or feel.

7. Tales of Berseria (PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PC)

Tales of Berseria is a Japanese RPG developed and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. Released in 2016, this game was made for Tales series’ fans who owned PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and Microsoft Windows. Tales of Berseria is the sixteenth mothership title in the Tales series and also a prequel of Tales of Zestiria. The game revolves around the conflict between emotion and reason.

Tales of Berseria takes place in a world called Desolation, specifically in the Holy Midgand Empire, a powerful country that rules over Desolation’s archipelago of a continent (the game’s world is shared with Tales of Zestiria). Throughout the empire, a disease known as Daemonblight causes humans to turn into a monster. The hero, Velvet Crowe has the task to save the world with her possessed arm.

6. Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (3DS, Switch, PlayStation 4, PC)

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age is a Japanese RPG developed and published by Square Enix. It is an entry of the long-running Dragon Quest series, and released initially in Japan (2017) for 3DS and PlayStation 4. Later on, it was released worldwide for PC and PlayStation 4 in 2018. Dragon Quest XI continues the gameplay of previous games in the series, now with the ability to explore high areas.

The game tells about the 16 year old main protagonist who grew up in a serene and quiet town. One day, when he participates in a certain village’s ceremony, he discovers that he is the reincarnation of a hero who has a great mission to save the world. Together with his allies: a child prodigy, a rude thief, and an entertainer he embarks on a journey trying to save his world from perils.

5. Ys: Memories of Celceta (PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 4, PC)

Ys: Memories of Celceta is an action RPG developed by Nihon Falcom in Japan, 2012 for PlayStation Vita. A year later, it was released in North America by Xseed Games and in PAL regions by NIS America in 2014. The PC version was released the next year. Ys: Memories of Celceta is identified as the fourth canonical game in the series, after outsourced the development of Ys IV: Mask of the Sun and Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys.

The game takes place a year after the events of Ys II and about a year before Ys: The Oath in Felghana. The game is set in the land of Celceta, and begins when the series’ protagonist, Adol Christin arrives in the town of Casnan with amnesia due to unknown reasons. There, he meets an information dealer, Duren. Both of them are asked by the Governor-General Griselda to explore Celceta and draw a map of it.

4. Fire Emblem: Three Houses (Switch)

Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a tactical RPG developed by Intelligent Systems and Koei Tecmo and published worldwide by Nintendo for Switch in 2019. The game is the sixteenth entry in the Fire Emblem series, and the first one for home consoles since Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn in 2007. The game carries the turn-based tactical gameplay while incorporating social simulation and time management elements.

Three Houses is set on the continent of Fodian, divided between three rival nations now at peace, connected through the Garreg Mach Monastery. Taking the role of a former mercenary and new tutor at Garreg Mach, the player (Byleth by default) must choose a nation to support and guide them through a series of battles.

3. The World Ends with You (Android, iOS, DS, Switch)

The World Ends with You is an action RPG developed by Square Enix and Jupiter originally for the Nintendo DS. Because of its success in the initial handheld, it was later ported to Android (2014) and iOS (2012) with the title of The World Ends with You: Solo Remix. This game involves urban fantasy elements, set in the modern-day Shibuya shopping district of Tokyo including its typical youth culture.

We will play as Neku Sakuraba, along with his friends participating in a game that will determine their fate. In the ported version, the story is unchanged from the original but it has redrawn visuals, expanded soundtrack, and revamped battle system to pamper the eyes of the gamer. Also, the ported version will have Google Play Games and Game Center Integration, with ranking and achievements.

2. Tokyo Xanadu (PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 4, PC)

Ys: Memories of Celceta is an action RPG developed by Nihon Falcom. The game is part of the Xanadu series, and was developed out of the Nihon Falcom’s desire to create a game of different type and setting than their other RPG franchises. The game was first released in Japan for the PlayStation Vita in 2015. An enhanced version, Tokyo Xanadu eX+ was released for PlayStation 4 (2016) and PC (2017).

In alternate reality, Tokyo was hit by a huge earthquake in 2005 that the city took 10 years to recover from. In 2015, Kou Tokisaka, a high school student who lives on the outskirts of Tokyo, lives alone and has some part time jobs. One day after work, after attempting to rescue his classmate Asuka Hiiragi from bad company he is sucked in a vortex that brings him to the nightmare realm Eclipse.

Tokyo Mirage Session #FE is a crossover RPG developed by Atlus and published by Nintendo for Wii U in 2015. The game combines gameplay, narrative, and aesthetic elements from Atlus’s Shin Megami Tensei series and Nintendo’s Fire Emblem series. The game was released in Japan in 2015, and worldwide in 2016. An enhanced port for Switch entitled Tokyo Mirage Session #FE Encore was released in early 2020.

Taking place in modern-day Tokyo and featuring real-life locations such as Shibuya and Harajuku, the game centers around hostile being known as Mirages who seek to harvest energy known as Performa from humans and are responsible for several disappearances. The story follows a group of teenagers who become allied with friendly Mirages and fight to protect innocent people while trying to find out who is behind the attacks.

Playing Persona series might give you an unforgettable experience, but let us not being too fanatic this time. If you have finished all the Persona games, then you will need those games to continue playing. Personally, I like action RPG such as Ys: Memories of Celceta, but I think the last three on the list is pretty good, all with its own differentiation in terms of gameplay and storyline.
