Top 7 RPG Set in the Modern Day According to Metacritic

The theme of RPG is vary and deep. Players can choose from whatever type of gameplay and atmosphere to their liking. While some RPG offers a medieval adventure, there are some which set in the modern day. There is nothing wrong with RPG using the backdrop of a classic, medieval war, but we should not forget those who want futuristic games like these top 7 RPG set in the modern day (with their metascore).

7. Parasite Eve (Score: 81)

Parasite Eve is a 1998 action RPG developed and published by Square. The game is a sequel to the novel Parasite Eve, written by Hideaki Sena, and also the first game in the Parasite Eve series. Parasite Eve was SquareSoft’s first M-rated game, and the first major American and Japanese game development collaboration for the company.

The story follows New York City police officer Aya Brea over a six-day span in 1997 as she attempts t stop the Eve, a woman who plans to destroy human race through spontaneous human combustion. Players explore levels set in areas of New York while utilizing a pausable real-time combat system along with several RPG elements.

6. Tokyo Mirage Session #FE Encore (Score: 81)

Tokyo Mirage Session #FE is a crossover RPG developed by Atlus and published by Nintendo for Wii U in 2015. The game combines gameplay, narrative, and aesthetic elements from Atlus’s Shin Megami Tensei series and Nintendo’s Fire Emblem series. The game was released in Japan in 2015, and worldwide in 2016. An enhanced port for Switch entitled Tokyo Mirage Session #FE Encore was released in early 2020.

Taking place in modern-day Tokyo and featuring real-life locations such as Shibuya and Harajuku, the game centers around hostile being known as Mirages who seek to harvest energy known as Performa from humans and are responsible for several disappearances. The story follows a group of teenagers who become allied with friendly Mirages and fight to protect innocent people while trying to find out who is behind the attacks.

5. Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 (Score: 82)

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 is a tactical RPG from Shin Megami Tensei universe developed by Atlus for Nintendo DS. It is a sequel to the 2009 Nintendo DS RPG Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor. The game was released in Japan in 2011, in North America a year after, and in Europe the next year. An enhanced version for Nintendo 3DS titled Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker, was released in 2015.

The setting of Devil Survivor 2 spans the whole country of Japan. It tells the story of Japanese igh school students who enter a pact, enabling them to summon demons and fight mysterious creatures invading and destroying the country. The plot may unfold differently depending on the player’s actions who assume the role of a silent young demon tamer invovled in this incident.

4. Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 (Score: 82)

Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 is an online action RPG developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft. The game is the sequel to Tom Clancy’s The Division in 2016, and released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows in 2019. It received generally favorable reviews from critics, with most noting it as an improvement over the first installment.

The game is set in a near-future Washington D.C. in the aftermath of a genetically engineered virus known as “Green Poison” being released. The game follows an agent of the Strategic Homeland Division as they try to rebuild the city. Washington D.C. is an open world for players to explore. Players can recruit non-playable characters by completing missions and providing supplies to different settlements.

3. Yakuza Kiwami 2 (Score: 85)

Yakuza Kiwami 2 is an action RPG developed and published by Sega. The game is a remake of the 2006 video game Yakuza 2 for the PlayStation 2, and the series’ second remake title following 2016’s Yakuza Kiwami. Yakuza Kiwami 2 was developed using the Dragon game engine from the Yakuza 6. The game was released for PlayStation 4 in 2017 and also for Microsoft Windows and Xbox One in 2019 and 2020.

A year after leaving his former life in the Tojo Clan behind, ex-yakuza Kazuma Kiryu is called back into action when the clan’s Fifth Chairman, Yukio Terada, is murdered by assassins from a rival organization, the Omi Alliance. Returning to Kamurocho, Kiryu must find a new chairman for the Tojo Clan and prevent an all-out war between the Tojo and the Omi.

Disco Elysium is a RPG developed and published by ZA/UM. The game was released for Microsoft Windows in 2019, macOS in 2020, and with PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch release planned for later in 2020. Disco Elysium is a non-traditional RPG featuring no combat. Instead, resolutions of events are done through skill checks and dialog trees via a system of 24 skills that represent different aspects.

Players will take the role of amnesiac detective who has been charged with solving a murder mystery. During the investigation, he comes to recall events about his own past as well as current forces trying to affect the city. Inspired by Infinity Engine-era RPG (particularly Planescape: Torment), Disco Elysium was written and designed by Karelian-Estonian novelist Robert Kurvitz.

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 5 is the sixth installment of the Persona series. This game was developed by Atlus (P-Studio) for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. It was released in Japan first in 2016, and worldwide in 2017. The Japan and North America version was published by Atlus while the Europe and Australia published by Deep Silver.

This game basically revolves around troubled high school students which consist of the main protagonist and his compatriots. These teenagers realized that they are living in a corrupted and dangerous world, so in order to seek freedom and justice they formed a group called Phantom Thieves of Hearts. With the assistance of Personas, they try to change the adults by entering their hearts.

While some people loves medieval setting and theme in their games, personally I prefer the modern day setting, but not too futuristic. And those games above are good choices if you think you have the same taste as mine. Speaking about a favorite, of course it is none other than Persona 5. Modern day setting, exciting gameplay, amazing plot and beautiful soundtrack made this RPG overpowered.
