PlayStation 3 is a home video game console and a successor of PlayStation 2 which was released in 2006. We can’t say that PlayStation 3 is a classic console although it is old, since it is considered as the start of next-generation console back then. It is also the first console to implement the using of Blu-ray Disc and PlayStation Network, integrating social gaming service by maximizing the use of internet.
With its capabilities, there are better gameplay and graphics that PlayStation 3 can provide to gamer, as well as in RPG genre. PlayStation 3 is known to have some exclusive RPG and also some RPG titles as a continuance of the games in PlayStation 2 (for example Tales series). And here are the top 7 PlayStation 3 JRPG that you shouldn’t miss!
7. Eternal Sonata
Eternal Sonata is an original JRPG created by Tri-Crescendo and published by Namco Bandai Games. The game was released in 2007 for Xbox 360 at first, but in 2008, it was also released for PlayStation 3 with additional content titled Trusty Bell: Chopin’s Dream – Reprise. The European and American version of the game was titled Eternal Sonata while the original Japanese entitled as Trusty Bell: Chopin’s Dream.
The game tells the story about the life of the Polish romantic pianist and composer named Frédéric François Chopin, who died of pulmonary tuberculosis at the age of 39. The story envisions a fictional world dreamed by Chopin during his last hours that is influenced by Chopin’s life and music, and in which he himself is a playable character, among others.
6. Tales of Graces F
Tales of Graces is a Japanese RPG released for the Wii on December 10, 2009 in Japan. This game was a core product of the Tales series and was developed by Namco Tales Studio. On December 2, 2010 Tales of Graces was ported (under the title of Tales of Graces F) to PlayStation 3 in Japan. Tales of Graces is the twelfth mothership title in the Tales series.
Tales of Graces takes place in a world known as Ephinea and follow Asbel Lhant, the main protagonist. During his childhood, Asbel befriend with an amnesiac girl and unfortunately witness her death. Surprisingly, seven years later he reunited with the girl who retains her amnesia. Together with his companions, Asbel become a hero who will save the world and his kingdom from destruction.
5. Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten
Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten is a tactical-JRPG created by Nippon Ichi Software as the fourth game in the Disgaea series. Released in 2011, it is the second Disgaea game to be on PlayStation 3. It has improved graphics from its predecessor Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice and also the availability of Online Mode.
The game tells the story of Valvatorez, a former tyrant leading a party to rebel against the president of the Netherworld. Valvatorez is a vampire who leads a coup d’etat who has the mission to reform the corrupt leadership in the Netherworld. Because of that, although it is a fun game, it has the theme of politics with the usual exciting gameplay of Disgaea series.
4. Final Fantasy XIII
Final Fantasy XIII is a JRPG for PlayStation 3 with the theme of science fiction. It is another creation of Square Enix which released multiplatform (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC), started in 2009. Final Fantasy XIII is the thirteenth main installment in the Final Fantasy series and the flagship title of the Fabula Nova Crystallis: Final Fantasy sub-series.
Final Fantasy XIII is set on a world named Gran Pulse, above which Cocoon, an artificial biodome on which humanity lives, fearful of the surface world. A member of the Guardian Corps military forces named Lightning goes rogue when her sister Serah is branded an l’Cie by a fal’Cie from Gran Pulse. From that point onwards, her adventures began as she designated as the enemy of Cocoon.
3. Tales of Xillia
Tales of Xillia is a Japanese RPG released exclusively for the PlayStation 3 in 2011. Tales of Xillia is the core product of the Tales series and developed by Namco Tales Studio with Namco Bandai Games as the publisher. Tales of Xillia is the thirteenth mothership title in the Tales series. The game’s musics are still composed by Motoi Sakuraba, as well as in some other Tales series.
Tales of Xillia takes place in a fictional world called Rieze Maxia where humans and ethereal spirits live in harmony. The game begins with the choice of following either Jude Mathis or Milla Maxwell, who elude government official after sabotaging a weapon of mass destruction known as the Lance of Kresnik. Together with their companions, they fought to bring peace back to the world.
2. Valkyria Chronicles
Valkyria Chronicle (or also known as Battlefield Valkyria: Gallian Chronicles for the Japanese version) is a tactical JRPG which was released exclusively for PlayStation 3 in 2008. The game was developed by Sega and Media.Vision, and has a rare kind of military theme, where only few are interested in exploring it. The game visuals utilized SEGA’s CANVAS graphics engine, making it look like a painting in motion.
The gameplay is one-of-a-kind so far, as it combines Third-Person Shooter gameplay with turn-based RPG which make this series is really unique compared with the other. Each of the character’s action will be determined by Action Point. It is necessary to think of our next move since it will decide the outcome of the battle.
1. Persona 5
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 5 is the sixth installment of the Persona series. This game was developed by Atlus (P-Studio) for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. It was released in Japan first in 2016, and worldwide in 2017. The Japan and North America version was published by Atlus while the Europe and Australia published by Deep Silver.
This game basically revolves around troubled high school students which consist of the main protagonist and his compatriots. These teenagers realized that they are living in a corrupted and dangerous world, so in order to seek freedom and justice they formed a group called Phantom Thieves of Hearts. With the assistance of Personas, they try to change the adults by entering their hearts.
PlayStation 3 is the starting point of next-generation games in video game console. That is why, it is called the next-generation console back then. Although the technology is outmatched by PlayStation 4, it has some good JRPG that is worth playing. If I have to choose, I will choose between Tales of Graces f and Tales of Xillia, since I’m a big fan of Tales series with its exciting gameplay and battles.
