What do you seek in playing a game, specificially RPG or JRPG? The graphics, maybe yes since it is a next-gen console; the gameplay, must be included since it is the main attraction from the beginning until the end; you should not the storyline. Even a RPG with nice gameplay is still inattractive without the good storyline. So, here are the top 7 PlayStation 3 JRPG with the best storyline for you.

Valkyria Chronicle (or also known as Battlefield Valkyria: Gallian Chronicles for the Japanese version) is a tactical JRPG which was released exclusively for PlayStation 3 in 2008. The game was developed by Sega and Media.Vision, and has a rare kind of military theme, where only few are interested in exploring it. The game visuals utilized SEGA’s CANVAS graphics engine, making it look like a painting in motion.

The game sets in a sort of Second World War alternate reality and centers on the story of a rebel leader named Welkin Gunther. Gunther and his squad fight back fight back against the Empire, trying to prevent them from stealing a precious fuel source and defending Europa from occupation. The gameplay combines Third-Person Shooter with turn-based RPG. Each of the character’s action will be determined by Action Point.

Tales of Xillia is a Japanese RPG released exclusively for the PlayStation 3 in 2011. Tales of Xillia is the core product of the Tales series and developed by Namco Tales Studio with Namco Bandai Games as the publisher. Tales of Xillia is the thirteenth mothership title in the Tales series. The game’s musics are still composed by Motoi Sakuraba, as well as in some other Tales series.

Tales of Xillia takes place in a fictional world called Rieze Maxia where humans and ethereal spirits live in harmony. The game begins with the choice of following either Jude Mathis or Milla Maxwell, who elude government official after sabotaging a weapon of mass destruction known as the Lance of Kresnik. Together with their companions, they fought to bring peace back to the world.

The game invokes a sense of childlike wonder and fantasy initiating a sense of familiarity as what what Studio Ghibli is good at, creating beautiful signature animation and visuals pampering player’s eyes.

Players control Oliver, a young boy who sets out on a journey to save his mother. The game is played from a third-person perspective and the world is navigated on foot, by boat, or on a dragon. While players navigate Oliver throughout the game’s world, other characters can be controlled during battle against enemies, unleashing magic and creatures known as Familiar which can be captured and tamed.

Tales of Symphonia is a Japanese RPG released for Nintendo GameCube on August 29, 2003 in Japan. Published by Namco, this game has become the core product of the Tales series and the fifth main game of the series. Tales of Symphonia Chronicles was released in 2013 for PlayStation 3, containing remastered version of Tales of Symphonia and Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World.

Tales of Symphonia follows the adventures of Lloyd Irving as he and his friends work to help Colette Brunel regenerate the world. This title brought the Tales series a new battle system in 3D, in which the player-controlled character moves on a 2D plane, except when physically attacking an enemy located off the plane. It is also the first title in the Tales series to feature alternate costumes for the main protagonists.

NieR is an action RPG developed by Cavia and published by Square Enix for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. In Japan, the game was released as NieR Gestalt for the Xbox 360, while an alternate version entitled NieR Replicant was released for PlayStation 3 with a younger main character. The game is a spin-off from the Drakengard series and follows the fifth ending of the first game.

The game puts the player in control of the titular protagonist Nier, as he attempts to find a cure for an illness, known as the Black Scrawl, to which his daughter Yonah has succumbed. Partnering with a talking book known as Grimoire Weiss, he journeys with two other characters, Kaine and Emil, as he attempts to find a remedy and understands the nature of the creatures known as Shades that stalks the world.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel is a RPG developed by Nihon Falcom in 2013 for PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 3. The direct sequel The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II was released in Japan in late 2014. The Trails series is one of the most intricate, ambitious, and well-written RPG ever developed with its story, characterization, and scope this series focuses on.

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 5 is the sixth installment of the Persona series. This game was developed by Atlus (P-Studio) for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. It was released in Japan first in 2016, and worldwide in 2017. The Japan and North America version was published by Atlus while the Europe and Australia published by Deep Silver.

This game basically revolves around troubled high school students which consist of the main protagonist and his compatriots. These teenagers realized that they are living in a corrupted and dangerous world, so in order to seek freedom and justice they formed a group called Phantom Thieves of Hearts. With the assistance of Personas, they try to change the adults by entering their hearts.

PlayStation 3 is the beginning of the new era of gaming, known as the next-gen. All of its predecessors are known to have a complete package of RPG, and it seems this next-gen console also has its fangs on it. I might choose Tales of Symphonia Chronicles since it was one of the best Tales series’ game. And of course, Tales of Xillia would be a nice companion too since it is also in the Tales series.
