The Nintendo 3DS is a handheld game console produced by Nintendo which is capable of displaying stereoscopic 3D effects without the use of 3D glasses. And if you follow the journey of Nintendo’s creations you will notice that Nintendo is best at delivering a fun and attractive games. But do you know that Nintendo 3DS also has a set of wonderful RPG? Here are the top 7 Nintendo 3DS RPG for you.
7. Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance
Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance is an action RPG developed and published by Square Enix for 3DS in 2012 as part of the Kingdom Hearts series. The game is the seventh installment in the Kingdom Hearts series. The game has been remastered in HD and released as part of Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue under the title of Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance HD.
The game takes place after the events of Kingdom Hearts Re:coded and focus on Sora and Riku’s Mark of Mastery exam in which they have to protect parallel worlds in preparation of the return of Master Xehanort. Besides controlling the two playable characters across a single scenario, the player is able to recruit creatures known as Dream Eaters that are able to assist in fights.
6. Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King was originally made for PlayStation 2, and ported to 3DS with the same title. The Android and iOS version of the game was released in 2013 in Japan and worldwide in 2014. The trademark of this game is its artwork made by Akira Toriyama (known as the creator of Dragon Ball), and the cell-shading textures that was popular in PlayStation 2 before.
In this game, we will play as the silent hero (players can create a name for him) who is a royal guard of Trodain. One day, the villain boss Dhoulmagus cast a spell on the castle and turn everyone into animals and plants. It is the job of the hero and his companions to bring peace back to the world.
5. Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor is another series from Shin Megami Tensei universe which was developed by Atlus for Nintendo DS and later ported to 3DS. It uses tactical RPG mechanism unlike the other series. We will control the main protagonist with his friends who was trapped in modern-day Tokyo infested with demons. With a device called COMPs, we will have to survive in 7 days before apocalypse.
Although it is included in Shin Megami Tensei universe, its gameplay is different with the usual Shin Megami Tensei series such as Persona series. As what a tactical RPG should be, we will move our characters in square grid. Each of your character can carry up to two demons to assist them in battle. There is also battle feature called Skill Crack which will allow you to steal enemy demon’s abilities.
4. Tales of the Abyss
Tales of the Abyss is another Japanese RPG from Namco Tales Studio and published by Namco in Japan, December 2005 (October 2006 in North America). This game was originally made for PlayStation 2, but later it is also released for 3DS. Tales of the Abyss is the eighth mosthership title in the Tales series and the tenth anniversary title. The game features musics by Motoi Sakuraba.
Tales of the Abyss focuses on Luke fon Fabre, a young swordsman whose pampered life turns upside down when he becomes the target of the military-religious organization known as the Order of Lorelei. Together with his companions, he attempts to discover the truth and significance of his own birth, as well as unravel the mystery of The Score, the prophecy that bounds humanity for thousand of years.
3. Shin Megami Tensei IV
Shin Megami Tensei IV is the fourth installment of the Shin Megami Tensei series. Still handled by Atlus, this game was developed and released exclusively for Nintendo 3DS in 2013. Continuing its success, the follow-up of the game was released in 2016 with the title Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse on the same platform.
The story revolves around the life of a young demon-slaying samurai named Flynn who lives in East Mikado. Together with his friends, he protects the medieval Kingdom of Mikado from demons invasion. Flynn and the others are sent to capture the Black Samurai who was transforming the citizen into demons. On his journey, he and his companions are mixed in between the demonic and angelic forces.
2. Bravely Default
Bravely Default or also known in Japan as Bravely Default: Flying Fairy is a RPG developed by Silicon Studio for Nintendo 3DS. The game was originally released in 2012 having Square Enix published the game in Japan and Nintendo handled publishing duties overseas. This game is considered a spiritual successor of Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, a gaiden or spin-off of the main Final Fantasy series.
Bravely Default is set in the world of Luxendarc which is kept in balance by four elemental crystals protected by the Crystal Orthodoxy, a religious group with influence across the world. Agnes Oblige, vestal of the Wind Crystal is forced to begin a journey to awaken the crystals after they are consumed by darkness. Along with her friends, she sets out to awaken the crystals and confront a greater evil.
1. Fire Emblem Awakening
Fire Emblem Awakening is a tactical RPG developed by Intelligent Systems and Nintendo SPD and published by Nintendo for 3DS in 2012. This game is the thirteenth entry in the Fire Emblem series and the first to be developed for the Nintendo 3DS. It is also the first to take place on two continents, Ylisse and Valm, the future form of Archanea and Valentia respectively.
The story takes place 2000 years after the event of the original Fire Emblem and Fire Emblem Gaiden, focusing on a group of soldiers from the kingdom of Ylisse. The player controls a customizable Avatar character (Robin by default) who suffers from amnesia. The Avatar is taken in by Chrom, the prince of Ylisse, and starts to aid Chrom’s army in defending Ylisse from monsters called the Risen.
As a modern handheld, we can say that Nintendo 3DS has successfully pamper us with a lot of great RPG, where there is only few that we can found on the previous version of DS. And as a fan of Tales series, I’ll go with Tales of the Abyss, but I have to admit that Fire Emblem Awakening catches my attention, and not to forget Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance as a loyal follower since the first title.
