Top 7 Most Influential RPG of All Time

Humans always try to improve. From time to time, they will try to develop everything they have to make it better. Final Fantasy VII Remake, Kingdom Hearts III, Dragon Quest XI, and Persona 5, are the example of improvement in RPG. Before those games exist, there are these top 7 most influential RPG of all time that became the first stepping stone and made an example for the next generation RPG.

7. Mass Effect 2 (Xbox 360, PC)

Mass Effect 2 is an action RPG developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts. The game was released Xbox 360 and PC in 2010, and PlayStation 3 in 2011. Mass Effect 2 is the second installment of the Mass Effect series and a sequel to the original Mass Effect.

The game takes place within the Milky Way Galaxy during the 22nd century, where humanity is threatened by an insectoid species known as the Collectors. The player assumes the role of Commander Shepard, an elite human soldier who must construct and gains the loyalty of a diverse team and stops the enemy in suicide mission.

6. Final Fantasy VII (Android, iOS, Switch, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC)

Final Fantasy VII is a RPG developed by Square in 1997 for PlayStation. The game is the seventh main installment in the Final Fantasy series. Final Fantasy VII is without a doubt one of the greatest creations of Square Enix. There are too many reasons why this title feels everlasting; now it even has a remake on PlayStation 4. The success has moved Square Enix to port this game into Android and iOS platform as well.

We will play as Cloud, the main protagonist of Final Fantasy VII and the most popular persona among the RPG characters. Although he isn’t a silent protagonist, Cloud doesn’t speak too much at first. As a former SOLDIER’s proud swordsman, he became arrogant and selfish. But after he discovers about his past, he began to value friendship and starts protecting others, even the Planet.

5. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC)

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an action RPG developed and published by CD Projekt in 2015, based on The Witcher novels. In this third game of the series the developer totally making a revolution upon its world. We can find tons of quests from village, wood, and town areas. With all of its expansion packs and DLC, it is said that there is a gamer who able to complete the game in about 1800 hours.

Just like its two predecessors, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt played in an open world with a third-person perspective. We will control the main protagonist, Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter (or also known as witcher) who is looking for his missing adopted daughter on the run from the Wild Hunt, an otherworldly force determined to capture her and use her powers. Our main objective will be to save her.

4. Fallout 3 (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC)

Fallout 3 is a 2008 post-apocalyptic action role-playing open world video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. The game is the third major installment in the Fallout series, and the first game to be created by Bethesda since it bought the franchise from Interplay Entertainment.

The game is set within a post-apocalyptic open world environment that encompasses a scaled region consisting of the ruins of Washington, D.C. and much of the countryside to the north and west of it. It takes place within Fallout‘s usual setting of a world which eventually led to its devastation by a nuclear apocalypse in the year 2077, caused by a major international conflict between the United States and China.

Diablo III is a hack-and-slash action RPG developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment as the third installment in the Diablo franchise. The game was released for Microsoft Windows and OS X in 2012, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2013, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2014, and the Nintendo Switch version in 2018.

In this game, players choose to play as one of seven characters classes – Barbarian, Crusader, Demon Hunter, Monk, Necromancer, Witch Doctor, or Wizard – and are tasked with defeating the Lord of Terror, Diablo, as in previous games in the series.

2. Dark Souls (Switch, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC)

The game is a spiritual successor to FromSoftware’s Demon’s Souls and act as the second installment in the Souls series. A port for Microsoft Windows was released in 2012, which featured additional content not seen in the original PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions.

Dark Souls takes place in the fictional kingdom of Lordran, where players assume the role of a cursed undead character who begins a pilgrimage to discover the fate of their kind. Historical events in its world and their significance are often implicit or left to player interpretation rather than being fully shown or explained.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an action RPG developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks in 2011. This game is known for the fourth-best selling Xbox 360 games. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim offers you a huge world with endless exploring into islands, caves, castles, and many more. With all DLC and mods, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim can be completed over 1000 hours.

The main story revolves around the protagonist, the Dragonborn, on a quest to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, a dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world. The game is set 200 years after the events of Oblivion, and takes place in Skyrim, the northernmost province of Tamriel. Throughout the game, we will complete quests and develops our character in an open world with the choice to ignore or postpone the main storyline.

Every improvement has its core. And in this case, those games above are ones that influenced modern RPG the most because of their gameplay and mechanics. I have to give the biggest respect for the creator of Dark Souls, since this game has proven to be the most influential RPG, simply because Dark Souls III are even more popular and successful that cannot be forgotten by so many players.
