When talking about JRPG, maybe most people or gamers easily think about Final Fantasy series. We have to admit that Final Fantasy series holds a crucial role in the development of JRPG. Although Final Fantasy games did not set the world ablaze like before, JRPG genre is still a favorite. So you should know that there are other 7 JRPG of the past ten years that will make this genre even more interesting.
7. Radiant Historia (DS, 3DS)
Radiant Historia is a RPG co-developed by Atlus and Headlock for Nintendo DS. The game was released in Japan in 2010 by Atlus and in North America in 2011 by Atlus USA. An expanded remake for the Nintendo DS entitled Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology was released in 2017 in Japan and was released in Europe and North America the following year.
The game is set on Vainqueur, a continent divided between the warring nations of Alistel and Granorg. Alistel soldier Stocke is chosen to wield the White Chronicle, a tome capable of navigating multiple timelines, so he may prevent Vainqueur’s desertification. Stocke and his party explore Vainqueur, fighting enemies along the way on a grid-based battlefield using a turn-based system.
6. Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS)
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey was developed by Atlus and Lancrase, and released for Nintendo DS in 2009. After the existence of Nintendo 3DS, the developer tried to bring the success of this game into it in this year. This enhanced port version, titled Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux includes new characters artwork, voice acting, three new endings, and new demons.
The story begins with a growing mysterious black hole which has appeared on South Pole area. To find out about this strange phenomenon, the United Nations sent elites from around the world called Schwarzwelt and given the task to investigate the area thoroughly. Later, the team found out that the area has infested with demons and realized that it is their duty to save humanity.
5. Xenoblade Chronicles (3DS, Switch, Wii, Wii U)
Xenoblade Chronicles is an open world action RPG developed by Monolith Soft and published by Nintendo initially for the Wii in 2010. It is the first entry in the Xenoblade Chronicles series, a subseries which forms part of the Xeno metaseries. Xenoblade Chronicles was known as a JRPG with a huge world to explore and an interesting story to follow.
Xenoblade Chronicles takes place on the frozen bodies of two warring titans, the Bionis and the Mechonis. The people of Bionis, including the human-like Homs, are in a perpetual war with the Mechon machine race of Mechonis. Key to the Homs’ efforts in fighting against the Mechon army is the Monado, a sword that is said to have been wielded by the Bionis.
4. The Last Story (Wii)
The Last Story is a Japanese action RPG developed by Mistwalker and AQ Interactive for the Wii video game console. Nintendo published the title in all regions except for North America, where it was published by Xseed Games. The game initially released in Japan in 2011, and also released in western territories through 2012.
The game takes place upon the island fortress of Lazulis, in a world that is slowly being drained of life by an unknown force. The story focuses on a group of mercenaries looking for work on Lazulis; one of them, Zael, dreams of becoming a knight. After receiving the mystical “Mark of the Outsider”, Zael becomes involved with a noblewoman named Calista in an ongoing war between humans and the beast-like Gorak.
3. Ys: Memories of Celceta (PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 4, PC)
Ys: Memories of Celceta is an action RPG developed by Nihon Falcom in Japan, 2012 for PlayStation Vita. A year later, it was released in North America by Xseed Games and in PAL regions by NIS America in 2014. The PC version was released the next year. Ys: Memories of Celceta is identified as the fourth canonical game in the series, after outsourced the development of Ys IV: Mask of the Sun and Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys.
The game takes place a year after the events of Ys II and about a year before Ys: The Oath in Felghana. The game is set in the land of Celceta, and begins when the series’ protagonist, Adol Christin arrives in the town of Casnan with amnesia due to unknown reasons. There, he meets an information dealer, Duren. Both of them are asked by the Governor-General Griselda to explore Celceta and draw a map of it.
2. Disgaea 5: Allies of Vengeance (Switch, PlayStation 4, PC)
Disgaea 5: Allies of Vengeance is a 2015 tactical RPG developed and published by Nippon Ichi Software, as part of the Disgaea series. A port for Nintendo Switch was released in Japan on March 3, 2017 as a launch title for the system. This port was released in Europe, North America, and Australia under the title Disgaea 5 Complete, containing all DLC content from the original without new content.
The story of the game is centered on the idea of revenge. The demon emperor Void Dark devastates numerous Netherworlds after coming into power, with the help of an army of over one million soldiers known as The Lost. Following that, the Overlords of the Netherworlds under Void Dark’s rule attempt to rise up and take revenge.
1. Persona 4 (PlayStation 2)
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 is the fifth game of the Persona series which was released in multiplatform: PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3. The successful initial release for PlayStation 2 has made Atlus decided to bring the game into next-generation consoles. The enchanced port of Persona 4 titled Persona 4 Golden was released for PlayStation Vita/PS TV in 2012 following its success.
The story follows a group of high school students dealing with a mysterious TV channel which distorted the truth of who they are and their identities. A string of bizarre murders related to the TV channel begins to disturb their peaceful town. Together, they explore the mysterious world inside the TV and rescuing other victims from death. The answer of who was the serial killer lies inside the TV.

So JRPG is not only about Final Fantasy series, there are a lot other games that can make this genre interesting. Personally I would choose Ys: Memories of Celceta as my favorite since I love this kind of game, but I have played Radiant Historia and it was awesome for a Nintendo DS game back then. Another title not to be missed is Persona 4 for sure, with the great Shin Megami Tensei series name behind it.
