They year of 2019 may have passed, but there are still a lot of beautiful things remain. One of those things lies in RPG world. With all those games made under the label of RPG, there are some who are classified as JRPG and seem to have quality better than the other; at least those games are loved and never disappoint the players. So here are the top 7 JRPG of 2019 you might consider playing soon.
7. Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (3DS, Switch, PlayStation 4, PC)
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age is a Japanese RPG developed and published by Square Enix. It is an entry of the long-running Dragon Quest series, and released initially in Japan (2017) for 3DS and PlayStation 4. Later on, it was released worldwide for PC and PlayStation 4 in 2018. Dragon Quest XI continues the gameplay of previous games in the series, now with the ability to explore high areas.
The game tells about the 16 year old main protagonist who grew up in a serene and quiet town. One day, when he participates in a certain village’s ceremony, he discovers that he is the reincarnation of a hero who has a great mission to save the world. Together with his allies: a child prodigy, a rude thief, and an entertainer he embarks on a journey trying to save his world from perils.
6. Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition (Switch, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC)
Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition is a JRPG developed by Namco Tales Studio which is a remastered version of the original Tales of Vesperia (Xbox 360) in 2008. This game is the tenth mothership title in the Tales series and features a new version of the series’ trademark action-based Linear Motion Battle System, while also introducing another new element such as online scoring boards.
Tales of Vesperia is set in the world of Terca Lumireis, which uses an energy source called blastia for all its needs, including creating protective barriers around its cities. The story focuses on Yuri Lowell, a former Imperial Soldier who forms a guild called Brave Vesperia to aid Estelle, a noble woman he encounters on a mission. As they explore the world, Yuri is forced to confront his friend and former comrade Flynn.
5. Fire Emblem: Three Houses (Switch)
Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a tactical RPG developed by Intelligent Systems and Koei Tecmo and published worldwide by Nintendo for Switch in 2019. The game is the sixteenth entry in the Fire Emblem series, and the first one for home consoles since Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn in 2007. The game carries the turn-based tactical gameplay while incorporating social simulation and time management elements.
Three Houses is set on the continent of Fodian, divided between three rival nations now at peace, connected through the Garreg Mach Monastery. Taking the role of a former mercenary and new tutor at Garreg Mach, the player (Byleth by default) must choose a nation to support and guide them through a series of battles.
4. Kingdom Hearts III (PlayStation 4, Xbox One)
Kingdom Hearts III is an action RPG developed and published by Square Enix for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. This game is the twelfth installment in the Kingdom Hearts series, and serves as a conclusion of the Dark Seeker saga beginning with the original game. Kingdom Hearts III was released worldwide in January 2019 and had generally positive reviews from critics.
The story set after the event of Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, and we will play as Sora, the protagonist of the main Kingdom Hearts series. This time, with the help of Donald, Goofy, King Mickey, and Riku, they searched for the seven guardians of light as they attempt to thwart Xehanort’s to create a second Keyblade war.To do that, they are joining forces with characters from Disney and Pixar’s movies.
3. Pokemon Sword and Shield (Switch)
Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield are 2019 RPG developed by Game Freak and published by The Pokemon Company and Nintendo for Nintendo Switch. They are the first installment in the eighth generation of Pokemon series, and the second in the series after Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokemon: Let’s Go, Eevee!, to be released on a home game console.
Like previous installment, the chronicle journey of a young Pokemon trainer aiming to become the Pokemon Champion, this time in the new Galar region, which is based on the United Kingdom. The main objective of the games is to dethrone the Pokémon League Champion, Leon, in a tournament that various other Gym Leaders and rivals also take part in, whilst dealing with Team Yell and a nefarious conspiracy within the League.
2. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III (Switch, PlayStation 4, PC)
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III is a RPG developed by Nihon Falcom in 2017. This game was released for PlayStation 4, Japan only at first, but since October 2019 it was available worldwide. The ports for Switch and PC is said to be released in early 2020. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III is a part of the long-running The Legend of Heroes series and a direct sequel to Trails of Cold Steel II.
The story is sets one and a half year after the events of Trails of Cold Steel II and centered on the main protagonist, Rean Schwarzer, who is now a military professor. His new adventure begins when one of his students is possessed by a curse and attempts to assassinate the Emperor. Along with his companions, he tries to save the world from people who try to unleash the Great One’s sealed curse all across Zemuria.
1. Persona 5 (PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4)
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 5 is the sixth installment of the Persona series. This game was developed by Atlus (P-Studio) for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. It was released in Japan first in 2016, and worldwide in 2017. The Japan and North America version was published by Atlus while the Europe and Australia published by Deep Silver.
This game basically revolves around troubled high school students which consist of the main protagonist and his compatriots. These teenagers realized that they are living in a corrupted and dangerous world, so in order to seek freedom and justice they formed a group called Phantom Thieves of Hearts. With the assistance of Personas, they try to change the adults by entering their hearts.

The year of 2019 has left us a wonderful memories and experiences, along with all the JRPG released within the year. From all of the game listed above, I can say that those are some of the best you can found, but for sure there are still a lot that have not been listed yet. Talking about my favorite, I will go with Persona 5 since this game is really a masterpiece with all of the elements in it. Truly astonishing.
