Shin Megami Tensei series which developed by Atlus begins its debut in 1987; firstly released as Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei and still continues on producing sequels up until today. With its successes, the franchise has the opportunity to taste almost the entire consoles we knew today: from PlayStation to PlayStation 4, Game Boy to Nintendo Switch, and Xbox to PC.

Surprisingly, now this franchise even reached smartphone system. The latest upcoming release from Atlus would be Shin Megami Tensei: Liberation Dx2 for Android and iOS (read here for details). But we are not going to discuss it now since the game is still in beta test. So while waiting for its fully released version, you should know first about the top 7 games of Shin Megami Tensei series.

7. Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey

Shin Megami Tensei: Stranger Journey was developed by Atlus and Lancrase, and released for Nintendo DS in 2009. After the existence of Nintendo 3DS, the developer tried to bring the success of this game into it in this year. This enhanced port version, titled Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux includes new characters artwork, voice acting, three new endings, and new demons.

The story begins with a growing mysterious black hole which has appeared on South Pole area. To find out about this strange phenomenon, the United Nations sent elites from around the world called Schwarzwelt and given the task to investigate the area thoroughly. Later, the team found out that the area has infested with demons and realized that it is their duty to save humanity.

6. Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga

This game is actually a spin-off of the Shin Megami Tensei series which was released for PlayStation 2 in 2004. The game itself is an upgrade for Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne with the same engine, graphics, and assets but some differences in gameplay elements. Not only that, Digital Devil Saga also brings back the demons that were absent in Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne.

The story of this game is about the constant war that was happening in the land called The Junkyard. We will control Serph, a silent protagonist and also the leader of Embryon, a tribe engaged in battle against its rival, Vanguard. Serph’s adventure begins when he found a mysterious egg-like artifact that exploded during the war and changed the tribe members into demons.

5. Shin Megami Tensei IV

Shin Megami Tensei IV is the fourth installment of the Shin Megami Tensei series. Still handled by Atlus, this game was developed and released exclusively for Nintendo 3DS in 2013. Continuing its success, the follow-up of the game was released in 2016 with the title Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse on the same platform.

The story revolves around the life of a young demon-slaying samurai named Flynn who lives in East Mikado. Together with his friends, he protects the medieval Kingdom of Mikado from demons invasion. Flynn and the others are sent to capture the Black Samurai who was transforming the citizen into demons. On his journey, he and his companions are mixed in between the demonic and angelic forces.

4. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 is the fifth game of the Persona series which was released in multiplatform: PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3. The successful initial release for PlayStation 2 has made Atlus decided to bring the game into next-generation consoles. The enchanced port of Persona 4 titled Persona 4 Golden was released for PlayStation Vita/PS TV in 2012 following its success.

The story follows a group of high school students dealing with a mysterious TV channel which distorted the truth of who they are and their identities. A string of bizarre murders related to the TV channel begins to disturb their peaceful town. Together, they explore the mysterious world inside the TV and rescuing other victims from death. The answer of who was the serial killer lies inside the TV.

3. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3

This game is the fourth installment of the Persona series. Released in 2006, this game initially was made for PlayStation 2 console. An enhanced version titled Persona 3 FES was made on the same console with bonus chapter: The Answer (this version also available for PlayStation 3). There is also a PlayStation Portable version with an optional female protagonist titled Persona 3 Portable.

The story follows a group of high school students with the name of SEES who were trying to cooperate with each other in a world where death is acceptable. Together, they investigate a mysterious time period called Dark Hour and found out Tartarus, a huge tower containing Shadows. To fight them the members of SEES summons Persona as a manifestation of their inner self.

2. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 5

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 5 is the sixth installment of the Persona series. This game was developed by Atlus (P-Studio) for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. It was released in Japan first in 2016, and worldwide in 2017. The Japan and North America version was published by Atlus while the Europe and Australia published by Deep Silver.

This game basically revolves around troubled high school students which consist of the main protagonist and his compatriots. These teenagers realized that they are living in a corrupted and dangerous world, so in order to seek freedom and justice they formed a group called Phantom Thieves of Hearts. With the assistance of Personas, they try to change the adults by entering their hearts.

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne is the third installment of the Shin Megami Tensei series which was released for PlayStation 2. It was developed and published by Atlus in Japan and North America, and by Ghostlight in Europe. It has multiple versions of the game: the original version was initially published in 2003 by Atlus, while a director’s cut version was released in the next year.

The main protagonist is a high school student living in modern-day Tokyo who transformed into a half-demon when the world undergoes an apocalyptic event called Conception. On the brink of rebirth, Tokyo transformed into a world filled with demons. The protagonist becomes the key to change the fate of humanity. To do that, he recruits demons in Vortex World to fight alongside him.

Shin Megami Tensei series successfully brings the dark-themed game into an exciting game to be played. If usually we found that dark-themed games are kind of creepy or even boring, you will find excitements in Shin Megami Tensei series. Started in 1992, it seems like Atlus has no plan to stop making us amazed with Shin Megami Tensei series; let us all wait for the latest from this series.
