RPG genre has a lot of fans and also a huge selection of titles you can play. Unlike before, now almost all games implements RPG element to satisfy the lovers. And as a reliable website who specializes in reviewing any kind of entertainment, Metacritic has ranked the top 7 best RPG of the last decade. The list is dominated by western RPG, but all of these RPG are really worth to play!
7. Undertale (Score: 93)
Undertale is a RPG created by indie developer Toby Fox in 2015. Fox developed the entirety of the game by himself, including the script and music. The game took inspiration from several sources such as Mother, Brandish, and Mario & Luigi RPG series, the bullet hell shooter series Touhou Project, and the British comedy show Mr. Bean.
The player controls a child who has fallen into the Underground: a large secluded region under the surface of the Earth separated by a magic barrier. The player meets various monsters during the journey back to the surface. The combat system involves the player navigating through mini-bullet hell attacks by the opponent. They can opt to pacify or subdue monsters in order to spare them instead of killing them.
6. Mass Effect 3 (Score: 93)
Mass Effect 3 is an action RPG developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts. The game is the final installment of the Mass Effect trilogy and was first released in 2012 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Microsoft Windows. A Wii U version of the game entitled Mass Effect 3: Special Edition was later released by the end of the same year.
Mass Effect 3 is set within the Milky Way Galaxy in 2186, where galactic civilization is invaded by a highly advanced machine race of synthetic-organic starships known as Reapers. Similar to Mass Effect 2, the player can import a completed saved game into Mass Effect 3 that influences the plot by taking previous decisions into account. The game revolves around increasing military strength by completing missions and gathering resources.
5. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (Score: 93)
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an action RPG developed and published by CD Projekt in 2015, based on The Witcher novels. In this third game of the series the developer totally making a revolution upon its world. We can find tons of quests from village, wood, and town areas. With all of its expansion packs and DLC, it is said that there is a gamer who able to complete the game in about 1800 hours.
Just like its two predecessors, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt played in an open world with a third-person perspective. We will control the main protagonist, Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter (or also known as witcher) who is looking for his missing adopted daughter on the run from the Wild Hunt, an otherworldly force determined to capture her and use her powers. Our main objective will be to save her.
4. Divinity: Original Sin II (Score: 94)
Divinity: Original Sin II is a RPG developed and published by Larian Studios as the sequel to 2014’s Divinity: Original Sin. The game was released for Microsoft Windows in 2017, for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2018, for macOS in early 2019, and for Nintendo Switch in the same year. The game received universal acclaim, with many critics citing it as one of the best RPG of all time.
The game is set on the fantasy world of Rivellon, centuries after Divinity: Original Sin. Living beings on Rivellon have a form of energy known as Source, and individuals called Sourcerers can manipulate Source to cast spells or enhance their combat abilities. At the start of the game, the player character, a Sourcerer, is captured by the Divine Order and sent to an island prison known as Fort Joy until a gigantic Kraken Voidwoken attacks the ship.
3. Legend of Grimrock iOS (Score: 94)
Legend of Grimrock is an action RPG developed and published by Almost Human. The title is a 3D grid-based, real-time dungeon crawler based on the 1987 game Dungeon Master. It was originally released for Microsoft Windows in 2012, and later ported to OS X and Linux at the end of the same year with the iOS version released in 2015.
On top of Mount Grimrock, an airship carries a group of prisoners escorted by armed knights. The prisoners, sentenced by “the court” for crimes against the King, have been sentenced to be thrown into the pit of Mount Grimrock. On being sealed within the mountain, the prisoners make their way downwards through the levels of Grimrock Dungeon, guided by a disembodied voice which comes to them in their sleep promising that a way of escape.
2. Bastion iOS (Score: 94)
Bastion is a fantasy-themed action RPG game developed by Supergiant Games and published by Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment in 2011. It was originally released on Xbox 360, and then it is available as a browser game (Google Chrome), macOS, iOS, PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch. It is on the iOS that the game scores so highly and remains as one of the best iOS games.
In the game, the player controls “the Kid” as he moved through floating, fantasy-themed environments and fight enemies of various types. It features a dynamic voiceover from a narrator, and is presented as a two-dimensional game with an isometric camera and hand-painted, colorful art style. The story follows the Kid as he collects special shards to power the Bastion in the wake of the Calamity.
1. Mass Effect 2 (Score: 96)
Mass Effect 2 is an action RPG developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts. The game was released Xbox 360 and PC in 2010, and PlayStation 3 in 2011. Mass Effect 2 is the second installment of the Mass Effect series and a sequel to the original Mass Effect.
The game takes place within the Milky Way Galaxy during the 22nd century, where humanity is threatened by an insectoid species known as the Collectors. The player assumes the role of Commander Shepard, an elite human soldier who must construct and gains the loyalty of a diverse team and stops the enemy in suicide mission.

Although I’m a fan of JRPG, I have to admit that those games really deserved “the best” title. The western RPG is not as boring as we thought, it keeps getting better and now we already have those games above. I personally will choose Bastion as my favorite. The fact that it was ported to iOS in 2012 is a reason enough that this RPG has something unique in it.
