Instead of walking on the same spot, it gives us more elements of action and adventure, hence the action game fans easily loves RPG. So this time, I have these top 7 best RPG ever made according to Metacritic for you RPG lover.
7. Legend of Grimrock (iOS, PC)
Legend of Grimrock is an action RPG developed and published by Almost Human. The title is a 3D grid-based, real-time dungeon crawler based on the 1987 game Dungeon Master. It was originally released for Microsoft Windows in 2012, and later ported to OS X and Linux at the end of the same year with the iOS version released in 2015.
On top of Mount Grimrock, an airship carries a group of prisoners escorted by armed knights. The prisoners, sentenced by “the court” for crimes against the King, have been sentenced to be thrown into the pit of Mount Grimrock. On being sealed within the mountain, the prisoners make their way downwards through the levels of Grimrock Dungeon, guided by a disembodied voice which comes to them in their sleep promising that a way of escape.
6. Final Fantasy IX (Android, iOS, Switch, PlayStation, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC)
Final Fantasy IX is the ninth main installment in Final Fantasy series which was developed and published by Squaresoft. It was initially released in July 2000 for PlayStation, and later re-released in 2016 for iOS, Android and Microsoft Windows via Steam, and the last re-released in 2017 for PlayStation 4.
The story follows Zidane and his companion of Tantalus Theatre Troupe kidnapping Princess Garnet of Alexandria whom coincidentally planned to escape the castle. Accompanied by her personal guard Steiner, they become comrades and travel together with Zidane to know the secrets of the Crystal and try to stop the malevolent force who intends to destroy their world.
5. Divinity: Original Sin II – Definitive Edition (Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC)
Divinity: Original Sin II is a RPG developed and published by Larian Studios as the sequel to 2014’s Divinity: Original Sin. The game was released for Microsoft Windows in 2017, for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2018, for macOS in early 2019, and for Nintendo Switch in the same year. An improved version titled Divinity: Original Sin II – Definitive Edition was made, making thousand of changes from the original game.
The game is set on the fantasy world of Rivellon, centuries after Divinity: Original Sin. Living beings on Rivellon have a form of energy known as Source, and individuals called Sourcerers can manipulate Source to cast spells or enhance their combat abilities. At the start of the game, the player character, a Sourcerer, is captured by the Divine Order and sent to an island prison known as Fort Joy until a gigantic Kraken Voidwoken attacks the ship.
4. Baldur’s Gate II: Shadow of Amn (PC)
Baldur’s Gate II: Shadow of Amn is a RPG developed by BioWare and published by Interplay Entertainment. The game is a sequel to Baldur’s Gate (1998) and was released for Microsoft Windows in September 2000. Powered by BioWare’s Infinity Engine, Baldur’s Gate II uses an isometric perspective and pausable real-time gameplay.
Set in the fictional Forgotten Realms, much of Baldur’s Gate II takes place in and around Athkatla, a city in the country of Amn. Opening shortly after the events of Baldur’s Gate, the game continues the story of the protagonist, Gorion’s Ward, whose unique heritage has now drawn the attention of Jon Irenicus, a powerful and sinister mage. The storyline revolves around the machinations of Irenicus and the player’s encounters with him.
3. The World Ends with You: Solo Remix (Android, iOS, DS, Switch)
The World Ends with You is an action RPG developed by Square Enix and Jupiter originally for the Nintendo DS. Because of its success in the initial handheld, it was later ported to Android (2014) and iOS (2012) with the title of The World Ends with You: Solo Remix. This game involves urban fantasy elements, set in the modern-day Shibuya shopping district of Tokyo including its typical youth culture.
We will play as Neku Sakuraba, along with his friends participating in a game that will determine their fate. In the ported version, the story is unchanged from the original but it has redrawn visuals, expanded soundtrack, and revamped battle system to pamper the eyes of the gamer. Also, the ported version will have Google Play Games and Game Center Integration, with ranking and achievements.
2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Switch, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC)
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an action RPG developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks in 2011. This game is known for the fourth-best selling Xbox 360 games. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim offers you a huge world with endless exploring into islands, caves, castles, and many more. With all DLC and mods, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim can be completed over 1000 hours.
The main story revolves around the protagonist, the Dragonborn, on a quest to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, a dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world. The game is set 200 years after the events of Oblivion, and takes place in Skyrim, the northernmost province of Tamriel. Throughout the game, we will complete quests and develops our character in an open world with the choice to ignore or postpone the main storyline.
1. Mass Effect 2 (Xbox 360, PC)
Mass Effect 2 is an action RPG developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts. The game was released Xbox 360 and PC in 2010, and PlayStation 3 in 2011. Mass Effect 2 is the second installment of the Mass Effect series and a sequel to the original Mass Effect.
The game takes place within the Milky Way Galaxy during the 22nd century, where humanity is threatened by an insectoid species known as the Collectors. The player assumes the role of Commander Shepard, an elite human soldier who must construct and gains the loyalty of a diverse team and stops the enemy in suicide mission.

So it seems like the western RPG titles are dominating the list this time. As you can see, there are only two of the Japanese RPG on the list: Final Fantasy IX and The World Ends with You: Solo Remix that I would choose as my favorite. But talking about overall quality, I would go with Final Fantasy IX since it has an interesting plot about kidnapping at the beginning and turns into a journey to save the world.
