Open world gameplay is becoming more popular since many RPG implement it in their game. With more freedom to explore and the possibility to cross the boundaries, players are spoiled by the vast world and a lot of quests to be done. And because of that, I decided to try making a list of top 7 best open world RPG ever made. Unfortunately there are not much JRPG in this list, but these games are very worth trying!
7. Fallout 3 (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC)
Fallout 3 is a 2008 post-apocalyptic action role-playing open world video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. The game is the third major installment in the Fallout series, and the first game to be created by Bethesda since it bought the franchise from Interplay Entertainment.
The game is set within a post-apocalyptic open world environment that encompasses a scaled region consisting of the ruins of Washington, D.C. and much of the countryside to the north and west of it. It takes place within Fallout‘s usual setting of a world which eventually led to its devastation by a nuclear apocalypse in the year 2077, caused by a major international conflict between the United States and China.
6. Dragon Age: Origins (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC)
Dragon Age: Origins is a RPG developed by BioWare and published by Electronics Arts. It is the first game in the Dragon Age series and was released for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC in 2009. The game sets in fictional kingdom of Ferelden during the period of civil strife. The game puts the player in the role of a warrior, mage, or rogue, coming from an elven, human, or dwarven background.
The player character is recruited into the Grey Wardens, an ancient order that stands against the demonic forces known as Darkspawn. Our task is to defeat the Archdemon that commands them and ending their invasion. Throughout the game, players will encounter various companions who play major role in the game’s plot and gameplay.
5. Monster Hunter: World (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC)
Monster Hunter: World is an action RPG developed and published by Capcom for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. For your information, Monster Hunter: World is the sixth-best-selling PlayStation 4 game, so we can imagine how large the fanbase is. Originally to hunt and slay monsters in the game, the developer collaborated with Square Enix to bring some Final Fantasy creatures in the adventure.
In the game, the player takes the role of a Hunter, tasked to hunt down and either kill or trap monsters that roams in one of several environmental spaces. There will be reward for the player upon successfully doing that through loot consisting of parts from the monsters and other elements that are used to craft weapons and armors amongst other equipment.
4. Borderlands 3 (Stadia, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC)
Borderlands 3 is an action role-playing first-person shooter game developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K Games. The game is a sequel to 2012’s Borderlands 2 and the fourth entry in the main Borderlands series. The game was released initially in September 2019 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows and in October 2019 for Apple macOS. A Stadia port was released in December 2019.
The plot is centered around stopping the cult-leading twins, Troy and Tyreen Calypso, from harnessing the power of the alien Vaults spread across the galaxy. Players will complete quests and side missions, in a single player or multiplayer, as one of the four classes. When killed, enemies may drop weapons and gear which can be equipped. New abilities will unlock as the player gains experience.
3. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC)
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an action RPG developed and published by CD Projekt in 2015, based on The Witcher novels. In this third game of the series the developer totally making a revolution upon its world. We can find tons of quests from village, wood, and town areas. With all of its expansion packs and DLC, it is said that there is a gamer who able to complete the game in about 1800 hours.
Just like its two predecessors, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt played in an open world with a third-person perspective. We will control the main protagonist, Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter (or also known as witcher) who is looking for his missing adopted daughter on the run from the Wild Hunt, an otherworldly force determined to capture her and use her powers. Our main objective will be to save her.
2. Fallout: New Vegas (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC)
Fallout: New Vegas is a post-apocalyptic action RPG developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Bethesda Softworks. It was announced in April 2009 and released for PlayStation 3 and PC. The Xbox 360 version was released in October 2010. The game actually acts as a spin-off of the Fallout series and used the similar settings to Fallout 3.
The main story of New Vegas takes place in the year 2281, four years after the events of Fallout 3 and 204 years after the bombs fell. It is not a direct sequel, but does mark the return of several elements found in Fallout 2. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic open world environment that encompasses a region consisting of Arizona, California, and Nevada.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an action RPG developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks in 2011. This game is known for the fourth-best selling Xbox 360 games. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim offers you a huge world with endless exploring into islands, caves, castles, and many more. With all DLC and mods, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim can be completed over 1000 hours.
The main story revolves around the protagonist, the Dragonborn, on a quest to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, a dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world. The game is set 200 years after the events of Oblivion, and takes place in Skyrim, the northernmost province of Tamriel. Throughout the game, we will complete quests and develops our character in an open world with the choice to ignore or postpone the main storyline.
Playing an open world games is always fun, especially if you have a lot of free time. Combined with RPG elements, the gameplay would be even more interesting since RPG has a lot of fanbase too. Being the only open world RPG made by Japanese developer, I will choose Monster Hunter: World as my favorite. But for sure, you must try all those game since their rating is astounding as an open world game.
