7. Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition (Score: 91)
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age is a Japanese RPG developed and published by Square Enix. It is an entry of the long-running Dragon Quest series, and released initially in Japan (2017) for 3DS and PlayStation 4. Later on, it was released worldwide for PC and PlayStation 4 in 2018. An enhanced version, Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition was released in 2019 for Switch.
The game tells about the 16 year old main protagonist who grew up in a serene and quiet town. One day, when he participates in a certain village’s ceremony, he discovers that he is the reincarnation of a hero who has a great mission to save the world. Together with his allies: a child prodigy, a rude thief, and an entertainer he embarks on a journey trying to save his world from perils.
6. NieR: Automata (Score: 91)
NieR: Automata is an action RPG developed by PlatinumGames and published by Square Enix. The game was released for PlayStation 4 and PC in early 2017 and later an Xbox One port in June 2018. NieR: Automata is the sequel of NieR (2010), as spin-off sequel of the Drakengard series. Upon its release, NieR: Automata was met with positive reviews along with critics praising the game’s elements.
The story set in the midst of a proxy war between machines created by otherworldly invaders and the remnants of humanity. The story follows the battles of our main protagonist, a combat android, with her companion and a fugitive prototype. The gameplay combines RPG elements with action-based combat and mixed genre gameplay similar to that of NieR.
5. Xenoblade Chronicles (Score: 92)
Xenoblade Chronicles is an open world action RPG developed by Monolith Soft and published by Nintendo initially for the Wii in 2010. It is the first entry in the Xenoblade Chronicles series, a subseries which forms part of the Xeno metaseries. Xenoblade Chronicles was known as a JRPG with a huge world to explore and an interesting story to follow.
Xenoblade Chronicles takes place on the frozen bodies of two warring titans, the Bionis and the Mechonis. The people of Bionis, including the human-like Homs, are in a perpetual war with the Mechon machine race of Mechonis. Key to the Homs’ efforts in fighting against the Mechon army is the Monado, a sword that is said to have been wielded by the Bionis.
4. Fire Emblem Awakening (Score: 92)
Fire Emblem Awakening is a tactical RPG developed by Intelligent Systems and Nintendo SPD and published by Nintendo for 3DS in 2012. This game is the thirteenth entry in the Fire Emblem series and the first to be developed for the Nintendo 3DS. It is also the first to take place on two continents, Ylisse and Valm, the future form of Archanea and Valentia respectively.
The story takes place 2000 years after the event of the original Fire Emblem and Fire Emblem Gaiden, focusing on a group of soldiers from the kingdom of Ylisse. The player controls a customizable Avatar character (Robin by default) who suffers from amnesia. The Avatar is taken in by Chrom, the prince of Ylisse, and starts to aid Chrom’s army in defending Ylisse from monsters called the Risen.
3. Bloodborne (Score: 92)
Bloodborne is an action RPG developed by FromSoftware and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 4. The game was released worldwide in 2015. Bloodborne is played from a third-person perspective and the gameplay is focused on the strategic weapons-based combat and exploration.
Bloodborne follows the player’s character, a Hunter, through the decrepit Gothic, Victorian era-inspired city of Yharnam, whose inhabitants are afflicted with a blood-borne disease. Attempting to find the source of the plague, the player’s character unravels the city’s mysteries while fighting beasts and cosmic beings.
2. Persona 4 Golden (Score: 93)
Persona 4 Golden is an enhanced port of PlayStation 2’s Persona 4 that was released for the PlayStation Vita in 2012 and Microsoft Windows in 2020. It is an expanded version of the PlayStation 2 title, adding new features and story elements to the game. A new character named Marie was added to the story. Additional Personas, character outfits, and expanded spoken lines and anime cutscenes are included as well.
The story follows a group of high school students dealing with a mysterious TV channel which distorted the truth of who they are and their identities. A string of bizarre murders related to the TV channel begins to disturb their peaceful town. Together, they explore the mysterious world inside the TV and rescuing other victims from death. The answer of who was the serial killer lies inside the TV.
1. Persona 5 (Score: 93)
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 5 is the sixth installment of the Persona series. This game was developed by Atlus (P-Studio) for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. It was released in Japan first in 2016, and worldwide in 2017. The Japan and North America version was published by Atlus while the Europe and Australia published by Deep Silver.
This game basically revolves around troubled high school students which consist of the main protagonist and his compatriots. These teenagers realized that they are living in a corrupted and dangerous world, so in order to seek freedom and justice they formed a group called Phantom Thieves of Hearts. With the assistance of Personas, they try to change the adults by entering their hearts.
Finally, after a list consists of best RPG of the last decade that is dominated by the western games, JRPG has its portion now. As we all know, there are too many nice JRPG titles out there. But if we are talking about a favorite, I will go with the first and also the last on the list: Persona 5 for the most perfect score in all aspects and Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age for its classic RPG feel.
