Top 7 Action RPG According to Metacritic

The action RPG genre is generally broad; you can find so many games under the action RPG label. With the focus in story and gameplay, this genre has easily loved and become the most popular type of games you can find on the best games list. So this time, let me will present you these top 7 action RPG according to Metacritic, a website aggregates reviews of any kind of entertainment including video games.

7. Bastion (Score: 94)

Bastion is a fantasy-themed action RPG game developed by Supergiant Games and published by Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment in 2011. It was originally released on Xbox 360, and then it is available as a browser game (Google Chrome), macOS, iOS, PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch. It is on the iOS that the game scores so highly and remains as one of the best iOS games.

In the game, the player controls “the Kid” as he moved through floating, fantasy-themed environments and fight enemies of various types. It features a dynamic voiceover from a narrator, and is presented as a two-dimensional game with an isometric camera and hand-painted, colorful art style. The story follows the Kid as he collects special shards to power the Bastion in the wake of the Calamity.

6. Diablo (Score: 94)

Diablo is an action RPG featuring hack and slash gameplay which was developed by Blizzard North and published by Blizzard Entertainment in 1997. Set in the fictional Kingdom of Khanduras in the mortal realm, the player controls a lone hero battling to rid the world of Diablo, the Lord of Terror. Beneath the town of Tristram, the player journeys through sixteen randomly generated dungeon levels, ultimately entering Hell in order to face Diablo.

5. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (Score: 94)

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an action RPG developed and published by CD Projekt in 2015, based on The Witcher novels. In this third game of the series the developer totally making a revolution upon its world. We can find tons of quests from village, wood, and town areas. With all of its expansion packs and DLC, it is said that there is a gamer who able to complete the game in about 1800 hours.

Just like its two predecessors, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt played in an open world with a third-person perspective. We will control the main protagonist, Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter (or also known as witcher) who is looking for his missing adopted daughter on the run from the Wild Hunt, an otherworldly force determined to capture her and use her powers. Our main objective will be to save her.

4. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Score: 94)

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is an open world action RPG developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks and the Take-Two Interactive division 2K Games for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. It is the fourth installment in The Elder Scrolls action fantasy series, following The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and preceding The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Taking place within the fictional province of Cyrodiil, Oblivion’s main story revolves around the player character’s efforts to thwart a fanatical cult known as the “Mythic Dawn” that plans to open portal gates to a demonic realm known as “Oblivion”. The game continues the open-world tradition of its predecessors by allowing the player to travel anywhere in the game world at any time and to ignore or postpone the main storyline indefinitely.

The World Ends with You is an action RPG developed by Square Enix and Jupiter originally for the Nintendo DS. Because of its success in the initial handheld, it was later ported to Android (2014) and iOS (2012) with the title of The World Ends with You: Solo Remix. This game involves urban fantasy elements, set in the modern-day Shibuya shopping district of Tokyo including its typical youth culture.

We will play as Neku Sakuraba, along with his friends participating in a game that will determine their fate. In the ported version, the story is unchanged from the original but it has redrawn visuals, expanded soundtrack, and revamped battle system to pamper the eyes of the gamer. Also, the ported version will have Google Play Games and Game Center Integration, with ranking and achievements.

2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Score: 96)

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an action RPG developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks in 2011. This game is known for the fourth-best selling Xbox 360 games. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim offers you a huge world with endless exploring into islands, caves, castles, and many more. With all DLC and mods, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim can be completed over 1000 hours.

The main story revolves around the protagonist, the Dragonborn, on a quest to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, a dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world. The game is set 200 years after the events of Oblivion, and takes place in Skyrim, the northernmost province of Tamriel. Throughout the game, we will complete quests and develops our character in an open world with the choice to ignore or postpone the main storyline.

1. Mass Effect 2 (Score: 96)

Mass Effect 2 is an action RPG developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts. The game was released Xbox 360 and PC in 2010, and PlayStation 3 in 2011. Mass Effect 2 is the second installment of the Mass Effect series and a sequel to the original Mass Effect.

The game takes place within the Milky Way galaxy during the 22nd century, where humanity is threatened by an insectoid species known as the Collectors. The player assumes the role of Commander Shepard, an elite human soldier who must contruct and gains the loyalty of a diverse team and stops the enemy in suicide mission.

Playing action RPG is always a nice thing to do for me. But before, the number isn’t as big as now and apparently the world shifted and led action RPG to become easier to find. All those games are great games, without a doubt. But since I’m a fan of Final Fantasy series, I’ll choose The World Ends with You as my favorite. Tetsuya Nomura’s artwork has successfully delivered the game into the spotlight.
