Whenever something ends, there is always be a new beginning somewhere to be found. The year 2016 has come to a close with a lot of great releases. However, I myself am pretty sure that 2017 will not lose in comparison. Hence, without wasting anymore time, let us take a look at my top 10 most anticipated visual novel in 2017!
From the genius mind that brought us Steins;Gate, comes another (seemingly)mind-blowing visual novel titled Anonymous;Code. Set in the distant future of the year 2037, the story revolves around an Earth Simulator and a supercomputer called Gaia. The theme is more or less about humanity’s existence. The story will be told through the eyes of Poron Takaoka, a hacker with the ability to save and load moments, similar to those features in video games.
Anonymous;Code will be available for Playstation 4 and Playstation Vita in Japan. It is developed by 5pb and Chiyomaru Studio. Unfortunately, no plans of localization have been made, so we can only hope they make a localization somewhere in the near future (or just hope for a fan-translation of this visual novel in 2017).
9. Summer Pockets
“The dazzling brightness was the only thing I didn’t forget.” This is the text that’s been included in the official website of Summer Pockets. Following Harmonia, Summer Pockets is the latest production of Key planned to be released for PC. Unfortunately, other than the staffs involved, not much details about the game has been revealed at the moment. What we do know about the game is that the story will be about a nostalgic summer in an isolated island. Looking at the visual, I personally believe that Summer Pockets will be emotional like many of its Key predecessors, especially so when Jun Maeda (Kanon, Clannad, Air, Angel Beats!) is in charge of the original concept.
8. Re: Zero – Death or Kiss
After getting an anime adaptation from its original light novel, the title Re: Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu has been growing more and more popular. This growing popularity interests 5pb to create a visual novel adaptation titled Re: Zero – Death or Kiss. The visual novel will use an original story rather than following the anime’s storyline. The story will revolve around the Beauty Queen Election. Player will assume the role of Natsuki Subaru, in his attempt to break the curse that’s befallen him by helping one of the heroines to win the contest (and then get a kiss from her!).
Re: Zero – Death or Kiss will be available for Playstation 4 and Playstation Vita. For you fans of the anime series, it’s definitely worth to wait the release of this visual novel in 2017. Read more about this visual novel here.
7. Attack on Titan: Escape from Certain Death
From manga to anime, the title Attack on Titan has been getting more and more attention from people around the world. Now, Koei Tecmo has decided to bring the epic journey of Eren and co. to the world of visual novel. While it will feature known characters (such as Levi, Mikasa and others), the game itself will follow an original storyline. In Attack on Titan: Escape from Certain Death, you actually get to be a member of the Survey Corps (an original character). Getting caught by a Titan assault on a certain mission, you ended up in the underground of an old castle. Realizing that your resources are limited, you will join up with a single partner in your attempt to escape death.
Attack on Titan: Escape from Certain Death will be available for 3DS on March 2017 in Japan. Unfortunately, no localization has been confirmed by the developer. In the meantime, keep yourself updated on this game here.
6. Zero Escape: The Nonary Games
After releasing its third entry Zero Time Dilemma in 2016, the Zero Escape series comes back in 2017 with more surprises for us! Zero Escape: The Nonary Games is a compilation of the first two installments of the Zero Escape series. It comprises of an HD remake of the original Zero Escape: 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors (DS) and Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward (3DS). These two games revolve around a similar event called The Nonary Game. It is a game where 9 participants are forced to participate in solving various mysteries in order to escape safely.
Zero Escape: The Nonary Games will be released for PC, PS Vita, and PlayStation 4 somewhere around Spring 2017. This HD remake compilation will include both Japanese and English voice acting. Keep yourself updated on the Zero Escape series here.
5. Re: Sharin no Kuni
In a society where criminals are imposed with certain “Duties”, stood a young boy aspiring to be a “Special Elite” — a presence that oversees the rehabilitation of those with Duties. Kenichi Morita is only one step away from his dream of becoming a Special Elite. His final exam, is the rehabilitation of his three classmates. He will soon find a lot of oddities in his journey, leading him to his search of atonement and the truth behind the Land of the Spinning Wheel.
Sharin no Kuni is actually a 2005 visual novel by AKABEi SOFT2. A Kickstarter campaign was recently launched to create a localization of the game. Re: Sharin no Kuni is expected to be released on PC on August 2017. Having snatched the hearts of many fans in the past, Re: Sharin no Kuni is definitely one visual novel in 2017 that is worth waiting.
4. Lady Layton: The Millionaire Ariadone’s Conspiracy
Professor Layton has gone missing! No need to worry, though! For her daughter, Katrielle “Kat” Layton is here! Lady Layton: The Millionaire Ariadone’s Conspiracy is the latest entry of the Professor Layton series. It follows a new protagonist, Kat Layton, who will take her father’s place in solving various puzzles and mysteries. The story begins when Professor Layton vanishes under mysterious circumstances. Intrigued by the event, Kat goes off to unravel the mysteries behind her father’s sudden disappearance.

3. Aokana: Four Rhythm Across The Blue
In a world where flying is possible because of an anti-gravity shoes, there is a popular sport called Flying Circus. Masaya Hinata was a man on his way to becoming a world-class FC player, until he decided to retire after suffering a crushing defeat. Wanting to have nothing to do with the sport anymore, Masaya went on with his high school life trying to be as distant from the sport as possible. That is, until after he met the cheerful girl Asuka Kurashina. Upon witnessing her natural talent, there is some passion reignited within Masaya, which led him to become her FC Coach. So begins a passionate story about a man, as he regains his desire and determination to reach out to his dreams.
Aokana was originally a PC game which was ported to Playstation Vita. This version, however, is an HD remake for Playstation 4. The remake will include additional mini game as well as a special limited edition. Developer Sprite has launched the demo and is hoping to release this visual novel in 2017, somewhere around January.
2. Grisaia: Phantom Trigger
The next visual novel in 2017 to anticipate is the continuation of the Grisaia series, titled Grisaia: Phantom Trigger. After seeing the resolution of the Heath Oslo incident, the anti-terror organization CIRS has converted to a new agency called SORD. The story revolves itself around four students of Mihama Academy who will be working for SORD. Player will take on the role of Haruto Aoi, a former CIRS agent who now serves as a tactical instructor at the academy and the supervisor of our main four heroines. The game will tell about these five people, as they dived into dangerous missions over and over again, all for the greater good of the world.
Grisaia: Phantom Trigger is the newest release of the Grisaia series. It will consist of three volumes, as revealed by the developer Frontwing. Volume 1 & 2 of this game will be released simultaneously on Spring 2017 for PC through Steam. For more info on the Grisaia series, you can go here.
1. Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony
The last entry in my most anticipated visual novel in 2017 is Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony. Being the latest game of the Danganronpa series, Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony follows a completely different storyline. Taking place in a new school called Gifted Inmates Academy or Prison School for the Gifted, the game introduces 16 brand new characters who will participate in a killing game we all know too well. Even though it is a completely new setting and characters, the series’ iconic mascot Monokuma will still appear in this game. The theme of this game has been described as “psycho school”.
Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony will be available somewhere in 2017 for Playstation 4 and Playstation Vita. The original Japanese version titled New Danganronpa V3: Everyone’s New Semester of Murder will be released first in January 2017 in Japan. You can follow updates about the Danganronpa series here.
