As one of the most popular handheld, 3DS has their own market and lovers. 3DS often considered as the child-friendly gadget with its interactive and fun games since the first generation of Nintendo DS. As an RPG lover, having RPG titles in any console I have is a must. That is why, before getting a console I always do some research whether it has a selection of good RPG games or not.

For those who own 3DS, no need to worry! Here are the top 10 RPG games for 3DS lover in 2017 that is worth to try.

10. Pokémon Ultra Sun and Moon

The most famous monster collecting game from Nintendo finally has its new update, the sequel of the previously known: Pokémon Sun and Moon. In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Moon, players will be in the Alola region like its original version, but with the better customization, new moves, new challenges, and of course new Pokémon.

Two areas are added to give players different sensation and challenges throughout the game. The Pikachu Valley and Ultra Space is the new areas that players can try. What’s more, The Ultra Space will give you chance to battles the previous Pokémon villains including the legendary Pokémon and ultra beasts.

The remake of Gameboy Advance’s title known as Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga has come with new enhancements. It came with updated graphics, new soundtracks, and better controls. Although the story is identical with the Gameboy Advance version, it has added a new story named Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser.

Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser involves Bowser’s minion to battle the enemies of the Beanbean kingdom to rescue Bowser. There are three types of troopers: melee (physical attack), ranged (projectiles attack), and flying (physical fighters who fly). Each type has its own weakness compared to the other, following rock-paper-scissors pattern.

This game revolves around two boys who have the same dream: to rid the world of war. As the story progress, they will deal with a lot condition and choices to be made. That choice can change the course of the story later. One of the most significant elements in this game is the skill tree system. We can choose whether a character is strong in attack, defense, or magic casting. This game is multi-platform, firstly released in Android, and now also available in 3DS.

Harvest Moon is one of the legendary PSX titles that is very popular that nobody never heard of it. Since the first generation, this title has been growing with a lot of improvements and uniqueness. The 3DS version of this game called Harvest Moon: Skytree Village sets place in the land known as Oasis of the Harvest Goddess.

The story told that many people used to live in the village called Skytree Village. But as the power of the Harvest Goddess weakened, the land became parched and dry. It is the job of the player (players can choose between a boy or a girl) to revive the seven Skytrees and bring back the power of the Harvest Goddess.

6. Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King was originally made for PlayStation 2, and ported to 3DS with the same title. The trademark of this game is its artwork made by Akira Toriyama (known as the creator of Dragon Ball), and the cell-shading textures that was popular in PlayStation 2 before.

In this game, we will play as the silent hero (players can create a name for him) who is a royal guard of Trodain. One day, the villain boss Dhoulmagus cast a spell on the castle and turn everyone into animals and plants. It is the job of the hero and his companions to bring peace back to the world.

5. Dragon Quest XI

The game tells about the 16 year old main protagonist who grew up in a serene and quiet town. One day, when he participates in a certain village’s ceremony, he discovers that he is the reincarnation of a hero who has a great mission to save the world. Together with his allies: a child prodigy, a rude thief, and an entertainer he embarks on a journey.

This latest installment of Dragon Quest title known as Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age is available now in 3DS. The 3DS version consists of two gameplay mode. One is the traditional gameplay of the early Dragon Quest series, the other one is the Dragon Quest IX style gameplay with a slight mix of old style gameplay.

As one of the trademark of Nintendo games, Fire Emblem keeps having upgraded with more titles and beautiful graphics. The Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia is a full remake of the past Fire Emblem Gaiden. Fire Emblem Echoes series carries over the core gameplay of Fire Emblem series with added mechanics and some new elements including dungeon crawling.

The story is about the sibling gods Mila and Duma who fought over the continent of Valentia. Later on, they called a truce and split the continent for half each. It is divided into two region with their own weaknesses. This is a job for Alm and Celica, the main protagonists of the game to restore peace of the corrupted world.

3. Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth

Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth tells about the Yggdrasil Tree in the land of Arcania which said to keep peace in the world. Legend said, whoever reach the top of the tree will have their dreams come true. Each of the land’s four races has their own legend about what the tree holds, but nobody has ever seen it. Those who wish to challenge the Yggdrasil labyrinth to climb to the top must visit the city of Iorys at the base of the tree. There, they will become an adventurer and explore the labyrinth.

The Monster Hunter franchise has become so popular that it reach handheld console like 3DS. The Monster Hunter XX title is available for 3DS and Switch. Still the same as another Monster Hunter titles, players will need to survive in a wilderness full of monsters.

By using initial weapons type such as dual blades, great swords, bow gun and many more,players must survive while doing missions and quests. In Monster Hunter XX players will have the chance to deal with the flagship monster such as Valphalk and Massacre Demon Diablos. This fourth generations of Monster Hunter title will probably satisfy the hunger of 3DS users for a huge-monster hunting game.

Ever Oasis is one of the latest popular multi-platform games which were classified as an action-adventure RPG. Ever Oasis tells the story of Tethu/Tethi who was helped by a water spirit named Esna to create an oasis. It becomes necessary as Tethu/Tethi’s brother was kidnapped and his oasis falls to Chaos.

As the story progress, players will find more residents of the oasis to aid in fighting the creatures taken over by Chaos. Players will discover several villages in the process, which were occupied by races such as the Drauk, the Serkah and the Lagora. Together with the new allies, players will strive to create a perfect oasis while uncover the mysteries of what happened to Tethu/Tethi’s brother.

Among all those RPG titles for 3DS, I would pay more attention to Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia since this game bring a new dungeon crawling feature.
