If you say think that PlayStation 2 is the core of many modern RPG then we can say that PlayStation is core of the core in RPG world. Many of other generation’s gameplay came from this simple yet legendary console. So here are the top 7 PlayStation JRPG, storyline-based.
7. Valkyrie Profile
Valkyrie Profile, or also known as Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth is the first of the Valkyrie Profile series that released in 1999 for PlayStation. The story involves a war between gods, Aesir and Vanir. To win the war called Ragnarok, Lenneth Valkyrie must recruit fallen human warriors to help in the fight against Vanir. A prequel and second prequel were produced later after the success of Valkyrie Profile.

6. Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete
Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete or simply known as Lunar: Silver Star Story in Japan is a RPG developed by Game Arts and Japan Art Media in 1996 as a remake of the 1992’s Lunar: The Silver Star. While the overall plot remains true to the original, accommodation are made to the PlayStation version’s story to allow for a larger, richer cast, as well as additional scenario.
The game follows the story of Alex, a young boy from a small, humble town who enters a life of adventure and intrigue after being chosen as the heir-apparent to the title of the “Dragonmaster”, guardian of the forces of the planet. With the help of his expanding band of companions, Alex must pass the trials set by ancient dragons to claim his place in history and stop a powerful sorcerer from controlling the world.
5. Final Fantasy Tactics
Final Fantasy Tactics is a tactical RPG created and developed by Squaresoft in 1997 for PlayStation. It is very popular in its era where RPG lovers lack of tactical games with good storyline and nice gameplay. What is so good about this game is that you can change your character’s job like in early Final Fantasy games, but this time it involves skill combination which makes the game even more exciting.
The story sets in Ivalice, a unified kingdom of seven territories which is caught in the middle of war (War of the Lions) between two opposing factions vying for rule of the kingdom. We will play as Ramza Beoulve, a member of the respected House Beoulve, who finds himself caught in the middle of the war and later trying to uncover the truth behind a sinister plot to save the kingdoms from destruction.
4. Arc the Lad Collection
Arc the Lad Collection is a compilation of Arc the Lad RPGs on PlayStation. The games were localized by Working Designs and firstly released in 2002. The games form a trilogy with a continuous story throughout each. Although Arc is the primary protagonist, each game features a new lead character. Arc the Lad introduces Arc, Arc the Lad II introduces Elc, while Arc the Lad III features Alec.
Each game expands on the previous one. Arc the Lad II features much larger and less linear world than its predecessor plus bringing back the cast of the first game in addition to featuring a new group of characters. Arc the Lad III features an upgraded graphics quality, replacing the sprite backdrops of the first two games with three-dimensional backgrounds.
Long before Xenosaga exist in PlayStation 2, there is Xenogears, its predecessor in PlayStation. Xenogears is a RPG developed and published by Squaresoft in 1998, long enough to be called a legend. With the music composed by Yatsunori Mitsuda, it successfully steals the spotlight in PlayStation’s hall of fame. Xenogears became a debut entry in the wider Xeno franchise later.
The story tells about the journey of Fei Fong Wong and his friends as they journey across the world to overthrow the all-powerful rule of Solaris and uncover mysteries concerning their world. The story incorporates themes of Jungian psychology, Freudian thought, and religious symbolism. With a “defect” in Disc 2, Xenogears is still loved by RPG lovers and many are still hoping that there would be a remake on current consoles.
2. Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VII is a RPG developed by Square in 1997 for PlayStation. The game is the seventh main installment in the Final Fantasy series. Final Fantasy VII is without a doubt one of the greatest creations of Square Enix. There are too many reasons why this title feels everlasting; now it even has a remake on PlayStation 4. The success has moved Square Enix to port this game into Android and iOS platform as well.
We will play as Cloud, the main protagonist of Final Fantasy VII and the most popular persona among the RPG characters. Although he isn’t a silent protagonist, Cloud doesn’t speak too much at first. As a former SOLDIER’s proud swordsman, he became arrogant and selfish. But after he discovers about his past, he began to value friendship and starts protecting others, even the Planet.
1. Suikoden II
Suikoden II is a RPG developed and published by Konami for PlayStation in 1998. The game is the second installment of the Suikoden series and remembered as one of the best RPG ever made. Many players admitted that the fun part of playing Suikoden series lies in the recruitment of the Stars of Destiny, as well as in Suikoden II with over 100 recruitable characters, of which over 40 are usable in combat.
Suikoden II takes place years after the events of the first Suikoden. The story centers on an invasion of the City States of Jowston by the Kingdom of Highland. We will control a silent protagonist who is the adopted son of Genkaku, a hero who saved City States of Jowston in a war againts Highland years ago. With his best friend Jowy Atreides they got caught up in the war along with the burden of a Rune bearer.
As I said above and many gamer believe, PlayStation acts as core of the core in RPG and JRPG development. Many of the mechanics were being used. No wonder, since many great and popular JRPG came from this legendary console. The most memorable one for me was Xenogears, too bad it has a defect on disc 2. But who knows if there will be a better remake someday, since game remaking is getting more popular lately.
