Nintendo DS or simply DS, is a dual-screen handheld game console developed and released by Nintendo in 2004. Although it is considered as an old, classic handheld, we can’t ignore that it has some RPG titles with quality. Without you noticing, these games in the list might not catch your attention before, but in fact they are good games. Here are the top 7 Nintendo DS RPG for you to play.
7. Golden Sun: Dark Dawn
Golden Sun: Dark Dawn is the third installment in a series of fantasy RPG Golden Sun which was developed by Camelot Software Planning for Nintendo DS. The game features a world with 3D environments and entirely 3D battles, and it features optional touch-screen stylus control. There are eight new playable characters, and this time the time the full party is assembled at a steady rate.
The story takes place 30 years after the first two games in the series left off. At the end of Golden Sun: The Lost Age after the heroes succeeded bringing back the power of the Alchemy, continents have shifted, new countries have emerged, as well as a new threat, Psynergy Vortexes. To stop it from sucking the elemental Psynergy from the world, a new generation of heroes arises to save the world from destruction.

The World Ends With You is an action RPG developed by Square Enix and Jupiter originally for the Nintendo DS. Because of its success in the initial handheld, it was later ported to Android (2014) and iOS (2012) with the title of The World Ends With You: Solo Remix. This game involves urban fantasy elements, set in the modern-day Shibuya shopping district of Tokyo including its typical youth culture.
We will play as Neku Sakuraba, along with his friends participating in a game that will determine their fate. In the ported version, the story is unchanged from the original but it has redrawn visuals, expanded soundtrack, and revamped battle system to pamper the eyes of the gamer. Also, the ported version will have Google Play Games and Game Center Integration, with ranking and achievements.
4. Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story
Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story is a RPG developed by AlphaDream and published by Nintendo for Nintendo DS in 2009. It is the third game in the Mario & Luigi RPG series and made use of the interactive screens of the DS in some of its gameplay mechanics, while also introducing several elements that would be used in the gameplay of future titles in the series.
This game’s plot involves Mario and Luigi being inhaled into the body of their long-time nemesis, Bowser. The Mario brothers learn to assist Bowser, who is unaware of their presence, as he combats Fawful who has taken control of the Mushroom Kingdom. The gameplay focuses on the co-operation of the trio, who uses their specific abilities to solve puzzles and fight enemies while progressing through the story.
3. Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of Starry Skies
Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies is a RPG developed by Level-5 for Nintendo DS in 2009. It was the first to be initially released for a handheld console, and the first to features spawning enemies rather than random encounters. The game retains many of the series’ traditional RPG elements such as turn-based combat and a level system based on gaining experience points.
The story begins in the Observatory, the floating kingdom of Celestrians, including the main protagonist. The main character begins as the guardian who has just undertaken protection of Angel Falls, a human village. He awakens without wings or a halo and having lost most of the Celestrian power and thus his journey with his fellow Celestrians becomes a mission to save the world.
2. Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver
Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver are paired Generation IV remakes of the Generation II games Pokemon Gold and Silver. The games were developed by GameFreak and published by The Pokemon Company and Nintendo for the Nintendo DS initially in 2009. While the games feature several expansions in key areas, the overall plot follows the same direction as the original Gold and Silver.
Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver take place in the Johto region of the franchise’s fictional universe, which features special creatures called Pokemon. The basic goal of the game is to become the best Pokemon trainer in the Johto and Kanto regions, which is done by raising and cataloging Pokemon and defeating other trainers.
1. Radiant Historia
Radiant Historia is a RPG co-developed by Atlus and Headlock for Nintendo DS. The game was released in Japan in 2010 by Atlus and in North America in 2011 by Atlus USA. An expanded remake for the Nintendo DS entitled Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology was released in 2017 in Japan and was released in Europe and North America the following year.
The game is set on Vainqueur, a continent divided between the warring nations of Alistel and Granorg. Alistel soldier Stocke is chosen to wield the White Chronicle, a tome capable of navigating multiple timelines, so he may prevent Vainqueur’s desertification. Stocke and his party explores Vainqueur, fighting enemies along the way on a grid-based battlefield using a turn-based system.

Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable are great handheld game consoles which are considered at the same level. Both of them can display a great role-playing gaming experience for us RPG lover. As for Nintendo DS, I will choose Radiant Historia or Dragon Quest series as both of them are a really great game, with Radiant Historia being exclusive for DS and Dragon Quest series being multiplatform.
