Super Nintendo Entertainment System, also known as Super NES or Super Nintendo is a video game console developed by Nintendo and released initially in 1990. In Japan, this console is called Super Famicom and was known to be the core of popular RPG series like Final Fantasy, Breath of Fire or Dragon Quest. And among many of its legendary games, here are the top 5 SNES action RPG you should know.
5. Soul Blazer
Soul Blazer, or also known as Soul Blader in Japan, is an action RPG for SNES developed by Quintet and published by Enix. Soul Blazer was scored by Yukihide Takekawa and was released in 1992 in Japan and North America, but not released in Europe until 1994. In this game, the player frees a series of town by fighting monsters in traditional dungeon crawl battles.
We will play as the Hero (Blazer) as the protagonist, a divine angel, deity or lesser-deity, or avatar sent by The Master to restore the world’s creature to life. Skilled with a sword and possessing the ability to speak with any living thing can be understood, he battles hordes of Deathtoll with the assistance of his Soul helpers.
4. Trials of Mana
Trials of Mana or also known as Seiken Densetsu 3 in Japan, is a 1995 action RPG developed and published by Square (now Square Enix) for Super Famicom. It is the sequel to the 1993 game Secret of Mana, and is the third installment in the Mana series. The game was designed by series creator Koichi Ishii, directed by veteran Square designer Hiromichi Tanaka and produced by Tetsuhisa Tsuruzono.
The game is set in a high fantasy world, and follows three heroes as they attempt to claim the legendary Mana Sword and prevent the Benevodons from being unleashed and destroying the world. The game features three lengthy main plotlines and six different possible main characters, each with their own storylines, and allows two players to play simultaneously.
3. Star Ocean
Star Ocean is an action RPG developed by tri-Ace and published by Enix for Super Famicom in 1996. The game is the first game in the Star Ocean series and was released only in Japan. Star Ocean is the first game to be developed by tri-Ace, consisting of staff that had previously left Wolf Team. The game used a special compression chip in its cartridge to compress and store all of the game’s data.
The story involves three friends: Roddick, Millie, and Dorne who, while searching for the cure to a new disease, come into contact with a space-faring federation that is locked in a war with another galactic power. Using advanced technologies and time travel, the group attempts to uncover the cause of the war and to find a cure for their planet.
2. Tales of Phantasia
Tales of Phantasia is the first installment of the Tales series which was released in 1995. Firstly made for SNES, Tales of Phantasia successfully caught the attention of gamer. Not long after its release, Tales of Phantasia became popular and was known for a unique kind of RPG which can push the classic console to the limit. The popularity made the developer of this game decided to re-port it in later console.
The story begins with a battle of the four heroes with the evil Dhaos. They actually won the battle, but unfortunately Dhaos has succeeded to escape through time. Then another four unknown heroes succeeded to seal Dhaos using mysterious pendants. Cress Albane and his companions are the next heroes who bear the burden to defeat Dhaos once again.
Terranigma or also known as Tenchi Sozo in Japan, is a 1995 action RPG for SNES developed by Quintet. Manga artist Kamui Fujiwara is credited with the character designs. The game was published by Enix in Japan before Nintendo localized the game and released English, Germany, French, and Spanish version in Europe and Australia.
Terranigma tells the story of the Earth’s resurrection by the hands of a boy named Ark, and its progress from the evolution of life to the present day. The fight between God and the Devil taking place, more fiercely than ever. The conflict culminated in a final battle in Antarctica, with neither of the two forces was victorious. The continents submerged into the sea and the under world was sealed away.
Playing SNES RPG is always a good experience for me. Like it or not, the classic gameplay and visuals is the core of the RPG we know today, and personally I like all the aspects of SNES action RPG. As for my favorite, I will choose Tales of Phantasia and Star Ocean, since I have memories with both games and those titles happened to be the beginning of the famous Tales and Star Ocean series we know today.
