Classic RPG is what catches most of my attention when I played several types of RPG. I became attached with the storyline and gameplay, also hypnotized by the battle system that is unforgettable for some players. There are good games or series that is popular on classic console, success in its own era but unfortunately lack of chance in the future and continuance of the story after the last game in the series.
If survival horror genre has the famous Resident Evil 2 Remake that just launched recently, I guess some RPG on classic console also deserves a remake. Since these games are legends, hopefully the developers will consider making remakes on them and deliver a new version with the latest technology. Below are the games that I think deserve a remake on current gen console for many reasons.
1. Legend of Legaia
Legend of Legaia is a PlayStation RPG developed by Prokion and Contrail. It has a one-of-a-kind battle system using certain button combinations. The story revolves around Vahn, Noa, and Gala who tries to save the world from mysterious mist that can change human into a monster. It was followed by Legaia 2: Duel Saga on PlayStation 2 in 2001.
The developer, Contrail, also developed popular titles such as Wild Arms 2 and Alundra 2 on PlayStation platform. The uniqueness of the battle system where you must input certain command using buttons to unleash a deadly combo is really one-of-a-kind. Although I enjoy more playing Legend of Legaia than its sequel, I think it deserve a continuance from the last game on the current gen console.
Long before Xenosaga exist in PlayStation 2, there is its predecessor in PlayStation named Xenogears. Xenogears is a RPG developed and published by Squaresoft in 1998, long enough to be called a legend. With the music composed by Yatsunori Mitsuda, it successfully steals the spotlight in PlayStation’s hall of fame. Xenogears became a debut entry in the wider Xeno franchise later.
The story tells about the journey of Fei Fong Wong and his friends in fighting the all-powerful rule of Deus. Although there is a “defect” in Disc 2, Xenogears is still loved by RPG lovers. That is why; fans still hope that the defect will be fixed in the remake; even though it seems more impossible now since the team of Xenogears was already disbanded and some of the staff united in another developer.
3. Tales Series
Tales series has become a favorite since then until today. It also has several titles on the current gen console, but we should not forget the predecessors. The Tales series is already popular since long with its gameplay trademark: Linear Motion Battle System. The battle system is what most favorited by the players, that is why the battle mechanism is still adapted even for the latest games in the series.
Although there is a remastered version of Tales of Symphonia and Tales of Vesperia on current console, there are other Tales series titles which deserve a remake such as Tales of Legendia, Tales of Eternia, Tales of the Abyss, Tales of Phantasia, and many more. With its great battle system and gameplay I’m sure that the fans are hoping to be able to play them on the current gen console they own now.
4. Suikoden Series
Suikoden series is without a doubt a part of everlasting legends of classic RPG. Started in PlayStation and continued the series on PlayStation 2, this series completely enchant the player to follow the story until the end. Amazing plot, classic turn-based battle, exciting characters development, wonderful music, and friendly graphic are what Konami can offer with the legendary Suikoden series.
The story revolves around the world with 27 True Runes which started a war. The main character in every series will have a task to restore the world from the damage of war and rebuild it with his capabilities as a leader. The most interesting thing is that we can recruit 108 Stars of Destiny to help us either in castle or in the battle and war. If we can get all 108 heroes, a good ending will be waiting for us.
5. Grandia Series
Grandia series is a classic, turn-based RPG developed by Game Arts which was originally made for Dreamcast and PlayStation. This series is quite popular in its era, with the unique skills and battle system. The last in the series was Grandia III, which apparently didn’t make it as well as its predecessors. With the exciting battle and dungeon exploring I couldn’t forget, I guess it is time for this series to have a decent remake.
6. Breath of Fire Series
Breath of Fire series is a classic RPG that can be classified as one of the legend since it was started very well in classic console like SNES. The game which was developed by Capcom successfully steals the gamer’s attention on SNES with the turn-based battle system, nice plot, and friendly gameplay, then later also another success in PlayStation console with Breath of Fire III and Breath of Fire IV.
The story of the series basically revolves around the young man named Ryu who has the ability to transform into a dragon. Breath of Fire IV has an even deeper plot where we will not play only as Ryu but also as the main antagonist, Fou-Lu. But apparently the sequels are far from success, with Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter (PlayStation 2) and Breath of Fire VI (online game); so I think it is time for a real remake.
7. Wild Arms Series
Wild Arms series is a western-themed RPG which originally released in 1996 for PlayStation. For classic RPG lovers, Wild Arms series is a popular title; proven by its existence until PlayStation 2 with Wild Arms V. The first Wild Arms, which is the most unforgettable in the series as a pioneer, tells the story about Rudy Roughknight who tries to save the world with his mysterious weapon called ARM.
Probably because of its success in PlayStation, the first Wild Arms are getting a remake on PlayStation 2 with the title Wild Arms: Alter Code F, with better graphics. But unfortunately the anticipated sequel and remakes is still far from realisation because the developer decided to make a mobile phone game called Wild Arms: Million Memories, which more like a crossover game rather than a sequel.
As RPG lover, personally I have tried most of those games and series listed above. For me, those games are irreplaceable. I even prefer a replay of those games rather than trying a new one. And my favorite from above will be all of those games/series. If you haven’t tried most of it, you might lost the chance to taste the masterpieces of classic console; except, they will have a remake sooner or later.
So which one do you think deserve a remake on current gen console? Feel free to share your thoughts below.
