Final Fantasy XV Insight: The Kings of Lucis (Part 1)

King Regis Kingsglaive FFXV

As we all know, Final Fantasy XV is the latest title from Final Fantasy series made by Square Enix. Although it is not a new game anymore, there are things that make Final Fantasy XV is fun to discuss. Furthermore, Square Enix also launched the movie Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV as a prologue of the game. The movie revolves around the defending of Insomnia from Niflheim under the rule of King Regis.

Unlike the game where Noctis is the main protagonist, in Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV Nyx Ulric becomes the hero of the movie. As King Regis’ loyal Kingsglaive, he has what it takes for the Ring of Lucii to choose him. But we are not going to discuss about neither Noctis nor Nyx. There is another thing that catched my attention and probably other viewer also; The Kings of Lucis.

The Kings of Lucis appeared minorly on both the game and the movie. But that makes me even more curious about their identity. The Kings of Lucis depicted wearing a heavy armor reminds me of the Knights of the Round in Final Fantasy VII. But let us neglect the connection between both games now, as we will discuss about the identity of the Kings of Lucis and their Lucii form (first part).

1. The Mystic

The Mystic - Final Fantasy XV

The Founder King or known as The Mystic among the Lucii is the first king of Lucis named Somnus Lucis Caelum who lives 2000 years ago. He is the younger brother of The Immortal Accursed, whom supposed to be the first king if the Crystal hadn’t rejects him. As a king, he has a loyal guardian named Gilgamesh, whom appeared in some of Final Fantasy series as summon.

The Founder King is the protector of the first Oracle; a woman charged with maintaining the stability of Eos and cleanses the world by communing with its gods. He wields a long sword called the Blade of the Mystic, which was seen used by Noctis a lot among the other royal arms. As a founder of Lucis, he is a prominent king in Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV and speaks the most with Nyx among the other.

2. The Wise

The Wise - Final Fantasy XV

The Wise was known to be the first king who raised the Wall of the Lucian Kingdom. He wields a short sword and depicted with thinly armored knight with multiple wings in his Lucii form. Although it isn’t described very clearly, in the game (Royal and Windows edition) there was a monument dedicated to some of the rulers of yore, which are signed by Optimus Lucis Caelum, the 108th Lucian king.

3. The Conqueror

The Conqueror - Final Fantasy XV

The Conqueror was said to have lived in the times of chaos, and later rose as a champion that united the Lucian continent. He is also known for a king who fought for his people, and resulted in his citizens to usher in a great age of prosperity. He wields a halberd as his weapon. His form as the Conqueror’s Statue and Lucii is a knight in thin armor with cape and helmet with a long hair-like tassel.

4. The Clever

The Clever - Final Fantasy XV

The Clever is said to be a king well versed in the arts, be it the physical, intellectual, martial, or that of skill. His name is unknown, but he is depicted with crossbow as his weapon. His Conqueror’s Statue and Lucii form is a knight in thin armor with several lengths of a segmented cape draped over his back, also an antler-like extensions on top of his helmet.

5. The Wanderer

The Wanderer - Final Fantasy XV

The Wanderer is a king known to found no boundary to the land, making him wandered the world visiting places where no man had gone before. His name is also unknown. He wields twin swords that can combine into an enormous besieging weapon. His Conqueror’s Statue and Lucii form is a knight wearing a bulky, segmented armor and four arms with circular joints, making it possible to rotate.

6. The Oracle

The Oracle - Final Fantasy XV

The Oracle or known as Oracle King wields a giant Trident of the Oracle as shown in his Conqueror’s Statue and Lucii form. Trident of the Oracle is one of the royal arms with a shape of a tall trident which was used by the Oracles to commune with the gods. His Lucii form is a knight wearing helmet that resembles a bird. In Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV, Nyx fought Glauca on top of The Oracle’s shoulder.

7. The Rogue

The Rogue - Final Fantasy XV

The Rogue is known to be the first queen of Lucis with the name of Crepera Lucis Caelum. As a queen, she dislikes the watch of the public eye and preferred to stay in the shadows to enact her rule. She wields a shuriken, and her Lucii form has a thin armor with heels on her armored shoes and a horned crown. In Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV she jumps at the arriving of Diamond Weapon and fought it.

As far as I can remember, the Kings of Lucis aren’t described vividly and left some mysteries to its audience. But if I have to choose from the first seven kings, my favorite goes to The Mystic, where he seems to have more portion to talk with Nyx in Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV movie, although his shape isn’t that clear either. But among the other above, his design is the best with his Blade of the Mystic.

Which Kings of Lucis from the list above is your favorite? Please share your thoughts in the comment below.

  1. i just googled the name ‘Crepera’ and it showed me crepe pan pictures… wonder why. lol. anyway, i like The Queen of Lucis, just because of she’s a woman (obviously, lol), A strong, perhaps warrior, woman with shuriken. For me, it’s always amazing to see warrior women (kinda out of topic) like in the movie Black Phanter. :”)

    • Hahaha… maybe google should add more info about Crepera instead of crepe pan (ugh… i’m starving). By the way, you were right, Crepera looks really cool with the shuriken, but turns out that she isn’t the only queen of Lucis. There is also The Just, but with a bigger and heavier armor than The Rogue (you can see in part 2). But if you like Wakandan type of warrior woman, The Rogue probably suits you better with lighter armoring 😀
