Japanese RPG or JRPG has become a favorite for many reasons; the plot quality, the classic gameplay, and exciting battles are what it offers. Inside the games, also lies strong enemies and bosses that often drains our energy and patience due to its difficulty. But still, that doesn’t stop gamer to love JRPG. Here are 7 overpowered bosses in JRPG that you should be aware of.
1. Gaza (Legend of Legaia)
Gaza is an old man you will encounter inside Sol Tower. Despite his age, he is a formidable opponent for several times inside the monsters infested tower. He is equipped with armor and a weapon called Astral Sword, making him far from being considered old. This old man is addicted to slaying monster inside the tower to sharpen his swordsmanship he said, thus he prevents the heroes from purifying the tower.
In the second encounter he is empowered by a Seru, a parasitic monster in Legend of Legaia which make the user stronger with false power, including Gaza. His normal attacks can deplete a lot of your HP using combos, and he also has Neo Star Slash (a devastating attack that can deplete your entire party HP to basically nothing) which makes the battle even more difficult than the other bosses in the game.
2. Luca Blight (Suikoden II)
Luca Blight is the major antagonist of Suikoden II, and known for his unmatched cruelty and bloodlust. Because of his bad traits as a ruler, he got a nickname: Mad Prince. His source of anger resulted from a bad memories in his childhood regarding his family. The final battle scenes with him who took dozens of arrows and one-tenth of our army just to finally put him down.
But before that, we need to crawl through the no-end game dungeon to finally finish him in the last battle against the “Mad Prince”. The battle will be different with the other bosses, since the party will be split into three squads; each has the chance to weaken him before the last party deliver the finishing blow. But believe me; although it is 1 man vs 3 parties, he is a real tough boss that you can’t forget.
3. Redrum (Xenogears)
Redrum is a boss monster found in Kislev Sewers during your playthrough with Playstation’s classic masterpiece: Xenogears. This boss is a hard-to-forget one because of two reasons: first, he resides in the annoying sewers system of Nortune’s D-Block, second, as soon as the fight starts he will use his ability: Redrum to confuse and poison the entire party; not to forget his life-stealing attacks that can decimate you easily.
The most annoying thing about him is that after we proceed through the maze and dealing with a lot of poisonous monsters, he will come out just about a few steps away from the exit. You can only try him with strong combos, but this will result in him unleashing Murder, an instant-kill attack with life-stealing effect equivalent to the victim’s max HP.
4. Miguel (Chrono Cross)
Miguel is a boss fought in Chrono Cross. He is the father of Leena and Wazuki’s friend. Miguel accompanied his best friend Wazuki, when he tries to find medicine of Marbule to find a cure for Serge. After Wazuki and Miguel successfully entered Chronopolis and escaped the defense system, Miguel wasn’t so lucky and being imprisoned for four years and ended up being a guardian of the Frozen Flame.
Miguel was relieved at last when he meets Serge who came to take the Frozen Flame. But as the guardian, he must to fight Serge. Although he might be the weakest among the list, if we are not careful he can control the entire flow of the fight and making it harder. He can make himself stronger by changing the field to White while using an insidious combo of TurnBlack into AntiBlack to cripple individual characters.
5. Sho Minamimoto (The World Ends With You)
Sho is a character (and also a Reaper Officer) in Nintendo DS’ popular JRPG: The World Ends With You. He is the youngest Game Master of the Reapers in Shibuya and the second Game Master Neku battles. As a Game Master, he excels in all areas of leadership except one: cooperation with others. Although he looks more like a brawler, he is a mathematician who loves to speak using math terms.
Sho is one of the annoying bosses since he can teleports around the battlefield while hurting us in a couple of hits. He can also spawns a bunch of monsters to help him making our fight becomes even harder. The trick to deal with him is to use pins instead of actually swipe him with the Nintendo DS’ stylus. It turns out that doing so will triggers his teleport ability which will annoy us more upon defeating him.
6. Demi-fiend (Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga)
Demi-fiend is actually the protagonist of Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne, but apparently he also stars as an overpowered ultimate boss in Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga. As a tradition in Shin Megami Tensei series, the Demi-fiend is a silent protagonist. As an ultimate boss, he can only be challenged in New Cycle+. He can be found in the Anahata underground dungeon.
Basically, Demi-fiend will manipulates us into a pattern; if we do something to violate this pattern such as wasting time or equipping certain passive abilities, he can just kill you easily. This boss has so many tools for healing himself and decimates our party with just a single attack. He possesses a modified version of Gaea Rage, which is now even more devastating and can deal a significant amount of damage.
7. Elizabeth (Persona 3 FES)
Elizabeth is a character in the Persona series and a secret boss in Persona 3 FES. If players choose to start the second cycle of the game, Elizabeth will offer an extra sidequest of challenging her at the top of the bonus dungeon. There, she will reveals her frustration of being unable to find out her true meaning of life and hopes that someone stronger than her would be capable of giving her the answer.
Elizabeth is really an overpowered secret boss, as she is able to kill our characters instantly for using the wrong attack. She can immediately kill any character besides the hero in no time, and if we try to deflect her attack she can counter it with 9999 damage; a significant amount of damage that can decimate our entire party in no time. It was said that it is impossible to defeat her unless we spend the two playthroughs preparing for her.

Seems like the friendly, classic JRPG that we know also has a lot of strong bosses in each game. Although they are overpowered and almost impossible to beat half-prepared, players will always try to face them just to try the challenge. And I think Luca Blight steals my attention the most with his ill-mannered attitude; he isn’t only mad but also incredibly strong that it needs three squads to bring him down.
Which one do you think is the most overpowered boss? Have you ever faced them in boss battle before? Please share your thoughts in the comment below.
