Gamers often attached to a genre that they liked most. From action, adventure, arcade, FPS, RPG, simulation, etc the genres are differ. I like RPG mostly, because this genre is really close to me since the first time I owned console. That is why, my selection of games dominated by classic RPG titles.
In this modern times, the games are getting better with the touch of hi-tech and involvements of experts. Although the classic time has passed, there are still some game developers who chose to stick with classic elements because of its die-hard fans. And here is 7 modern classic RPG that you should know.
7. The Last Remnant
The Last Remnant might be one of the first classic-style RPG in next-generation console. The story about a young man who wants to save the world and his sister may be classical, but the touch of hi-tech makes it become a classic RPG with modern appearance. The classic turn-based system was upgraded into modern turn-based battle while controlling parties that are divided into unions.
6. Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana
Popularly known in PlayStation 2, Ys series has advance to next-generation console while keeping it classic gameplay. Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana is still about Adol Christin, the red-haired swordsman but now players will also play as Dana, a mysterious girl in Adol’s dream (watch the trailer here). The gameplay is still the same like before, with its hack and slash trademark but this time with a better graphics and combat animation.
5. Tales of Berseria
The tales of-series starts its journey in Tales of Destiny, made for PlayStation. As time goes by, this franchise proved to be consistent in producing good sequels and now we can find it on next-generation consoles. The main protagonist in Tales of Berseria is a girl named Velvet Crowe (see trailer here). As usual, we can find the Linear Motion Battle System in Tales of Berseria where players can move around in free will while slaying monsters.
4. Exist Archive
Maybe no one is ever heard of Exist Archive, but everyone must have been familiar with Valkyrie Profile. Exist Archive is said to be the successor of Valkyrie Profile (firstly known in PlayStation), and still keeping the side-scrolling style identical to Valkyrie Profile (watch the details here). The story is about twelve youths who are killed by an explosion in modern day Tokyo, and later find themselves “revived” in a planet called Protolexa.
3. Final Fantasy VII Remake
Probably one of the greatest and successful franchises from Square Enix: Final Fantasy VII is now has a remake on PlayStation 4. With the exact same storyline, Cloud Strife and his companions try to save the world from the clutches of the famous villain: Sephiroth. Even with the identical story, players will be pampered with the new appearance and highly detailed environments unlike in PlayStation before.
2. Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness
Star Ocean begins its journey in Super Nintendo, with simple graphics. As time goes by, it has several famous sequels and continuance in next-generation consoles. Known for its unique battle and skill system, the modern Star Ocean kept their trademarks and enhances it with stunning graphics. Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness tells the story about Fidel Camuze who try to defend his planet from the attacks of a more advanced space-traveling race (check the gameplay here).
1. Final Fantasy XV
The latest title from Square Enix which is known as Final Fantasy XV is probably one of the most anticipated game in 2016-2017. Nobody would underestimate the quality of Final Fantasy series, even in classic consoles. Now, that dominance is still continuing with the open-world style in Final Fantasy XV (check the details here).
The story tells about Noctis (the main protagonist who is a prince) with his three companions: Gladiolus, Ignis, and Prompto who fights together to reclaim his throne. The modern touch in this game is the open-world gameplay and the real-time battle system or known as Active Cross Battle System, where the battles take place in the current environment.
Mostly modern classic RPG that we found today started from first generation consoles such as PlayStation. Enhanced with beautiful graphics and excellent gameplay, the modern classic RPG is still trying to adapt the classical elements that the classic RPG has. That is why, even with modern enhancements players will still able to enjoy the modern classic RPG like the old times.
As for me, I must say that my favorite is The Last Remnant. Although it is not a new title, but I have to admit that it is one of the first next-generation games that can suit my taste in RPG. Dungeon exploring, level grinding, secret quests, turn-based battles, are what RPG lovers needs to satisfy their hunger for good RPG titles. Which one is your favorite?
