Playing RPG requires a lot of time and effort, everyone knows that. Because of the depth of the plot, character development, and sidequest, any games under the label of RPG are rarely finished in a short time. But do you know that among those games with long duration gameplay, there are these longest RPG that I highly recommend it to you, especially if you seek a RPG that seems to never end.
1. Suikoden III (PlayStation 2)
Suikoden III is a RPG developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo and published by Konami exclusive for PlayStation 2. The game was released in Japan and North America in 2002 and as the third installment of the main series. To finish this game, it takes about 61 hours of gameplay. The main factor of the long duration is the scenario system which is called by the Trinity Sight System.
The Trinity Sight System divided the scenario into three main paths: Hugo, Chris, and Geddoe’s story. The three chronological chapters act as the prologue of the story and the players can switch characters and point of view after finishing each chapter. At the end of each character’s Chapter 3, they will meet at Flame Champion’s hideout as turning point before continuing to the next chapter.
2. Final Fantasy XII (Switch, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC)
Final Fantasy XII is a fantasy JRPG developed and published by Squaresoft for PlayStation 2 in 2006. This game is a part of Final Fantasy series with some changes in gameplay: an open world, a seamless battle system, a controllable camera, and many more. In normal gameplay, this game requires about 65 hours of gameplay, excluded the optional contents that spends about 40 hours of play duration.
The game takes place in the fictional world of Ivalice, where the empires of Archadia and Rozzaria are waging an endless war. Ashe, princess of Dalmasca which caught between the warring nations meets Vaan, a young adventurer who dreams of becoming a sky pirate in command of an airship. By creating a resistance movement, Ashe and the party rally against the tyranny of the Archadian Empire.
3. Xenoblade Chronicles X (Wii U)
Xenoblade Chronicles X is an open world action-RPG developed by Monolith Soft and published by Nintendo for the Wii U video game console in 2015. Xenoblade Chronicles X was known as a JRPG with long duration, longer than the two Xenoblade Chronicles games. We can finish this game in about 70 hours focusing on the main story. The other two games were only about 65 hours long.
Xenoblade Chronicles X takes place on the uncharted planet Mira. Following Earth’s destruction during an alien war, humanity attempts to escape, with only a few ships surviving. After being rescued from a hibernation pod by a woman named Elma, the player character becomes a member of BLADE, which protects the colony and seeks the Lifehold while fending off the hostile creatures.
4. Persona 5 (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC)
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 5 is the sixth installment of the Persona series. This game was developed by Atlus (P-Studio) for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. It was released in Japan first in 2016, and worldwide in 2017. In normal gameplay, this game can be completed in about 97 hours, longer than Persona 3 and Persona 4 which took only about 50 hours to complete the main story.
This game basically revolves around troubled high school students which consist of the main protagonist and his compatriots. These teenagers realized that they are living in a corrupted and dangerous world, so in order to seek freedom and justice they formed a group called Phantom Thieves of Hearts. With the assistance of Personas, they try to change the adults by entering their hearts.
5. Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past (Android, iOS, 3DS, PlayStation)
Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past is a JRPG developed by Heartbeat and ArtePiazza, and published by Enix for PlayStation in 2000. Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past is the seventh installment of the Dragon Quest series, and the successor of Dragon Quest VI on Super Famicom. Focusing on the main story, it requires about 106 hours long of gameplay duration.
The game follows the Hero and his friends as they discover secrets about the mysterious islands surrounding their home of Estard. Through some ancient ruins, they are transported to the pasts of various islands and must defeat evil in each new location. Game mechanics are largely unchanged from the previous games, added with Class System to customize the characters.
6. Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (iOS, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation Vita)
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite is the western release of the Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G. It was released for PlayStation Portable in 2008 and iOS in 2014. This famous action-RPG franchise of PlayStation has over 500 hours of gameplay (casual gameplay), and previously unreleased monsters, weapons, and missions. Focusing on the main route, this game requires 140 hours to be completed.
Players can experience the adventure with up to four friends for a thrilling and savaging multiplayer hunting party. From devising the strategy to execute the attack, a team play is necessary and really important especially when we decided to hunt ferocious beasts which have greater strength and wider attack range.
7. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC)
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an action RPG developed and published by CD Projekt in 2015, based on The Witcher novels. In this third game of the series the developer totally making a revolution upon its world. We can find tons of quests from village, wood, and town areas. With all of its expansion packs and DLC, it is said that there is a gamer who able to complete the game in about 1800 hours.
By playing RPG, you must understand first that you will spend a lot of time to be able to finish the game. The games labeled under RPG usually have more secrets and sidequests than the other genre. And if I have to choose, I must choose these three: Suikoden III, Persona 5, and Dragon Quest VII. If you notice, all those RPG are from the popular and legendary series in classic console.
