With the latest technology of gaming console, we can play better games than we had before; we have more games vary in genres. Including in RPG, there are more great titles we can find spreading on a lot of platforms. For RPG lovers, this is good news since there was a time when RPG isn’t as interesting as now. So let me present you these 7 best RPG released in 2019 (according to Metacritic).
1. Disco Elysium (Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC)
Disco Elysium is a RPG developed and published by ZA/UM. The game was released for Microsoft Windows in 2019, macOS in 2020, and with PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch release planned for later in 2020. Disco Elysium is a non-traditional RPG featuring no combat. Instead, resolutions of events are done through skill checks and dialog trees via a system of 24 skills that represent different aspects.
Players will take the role of amnesiac detective who has been charged with solving a murder mystery. During the investigation, he comes to recall events about his own past as well as current forces trying to affect the city. Inspired by Infinity Engine-era RPG (particularly Planescape: Torment), Disco Elysium was written and designed by Karelian-Estonian novelist Robert Kurvitz.
2. Divinity: Original Sin 2 (Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC)
Divinity: Original Sin 2 is a RPG developed and published by Larian Studios as the sequel to 2014’s Divinity: Original Sin. The game was released for Microsoft Windows in 2017, for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2018, for macOS in early 2019, and for Nintendo Switch in the same year. The game received universal acclaim, with many critics citing it as one of the best RPG of all time.
The game is set on the fantasy world of Rivellon, centuries after Divinity: Original Sin. Living beings on Rivellon have a form of energy known as Source, and individuals called Sourcerers can manipulate Source to cast spells or enhance their combat abilities. At the start of the game, the player character, a Sourcerer, is captured by the Divine Order and sent to an island prison known as Fort Joy until a gigantic Kraken Voidwoken attacks the ship.
3. Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (3DS, Switch, PlayStation 4, PC)
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age is a Japanese RPG developed and published by Square Enix. It is an entry of the long-running Dragon Quest series, and released initially in Japan (2017) for 3DS and PlayStation 4. Later on, it was released worldwide for PC and PlayStation 4 in 2018. Dragon Quest XI continues the gameplay of previous games in the series, now with the ability to explore high areas.
The game tells about the 16 year old main protagonist who grew up in a serene and quiet town. One day, when he participates in a certain village’s ceremony, he discovers that he is the reincarnation of a hero who has a great mission to save the world. Together with his allies: a child prodigy, a rude thief, and an entertainer he embarks on a journey trying to save his world from perils.
4. Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers (PlayStation 4, PC)
Final Fantasy XIV is a MMORPG developed and published by Square Enix in 2010. Using the same name with the main franchise, Final Fantasy XIV offers a similar gameplay and elements of the Final Fantasy series. Before it was only available on PC, but now you can also play it on PlayStation 4. This game is a breath of fresh air for both Final Fantasy series’ lover and newcomers.
Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers is the third expansion for Final Fantasy XIV which was released in 2019. The expansion takes players to the First, one of thirteen reflection of the Source that is being consumed by a Flood of Light. The main region visited is known as Norvrandt, which is roughly analogous to the Source’s Eorzea, being the only place in the world that has not yet succumbed by Flood of Light.
5. Fire Emblem: Three Houses (Switch)
Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a tactical RPG developed by Intelligent Systems and Koei Tecmo and published worldwide by Nintendo for Switch in 2019. The game is the sixteenth entry in the Fire Emblem series, and the first one for home consoles since Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn in 2007. The game carries the turn-based tactical gameplay while incorporating social simulation and time management elements.
Three Houses is set on the continent of Fodian, divided between three rival nations now at peace, connected through the Garreg Mach Monastery. Taking the role of a former mercenary and new tutor at Garreg Mach, the player (Byleth by default) must choose a nation to support and guide them through a series of battles.
6. Monster Hunter: World – Iceborne (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC)
Monster Hunter: World is an action RPG developed and published by Capcom for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. For your information, Monster Hunter: World is the sixth-best-selling PlayStation 4 game, so we can imagine how large the fanbase is. Originally to hunt and slay monsters in the game, the developer collaborated with Square Enix to bring some Final Fantasy creatures in the adventure.
Iceborne expansion for Monster Hunter: World is a fully-fledged paid expansion that was released in 2019 on consoles, and in 2020 on PC. The Iceborne expansion builds on every aspect of Monster Hunter: World, starting with an all-new story that picks up after the main game and whisks hunters away to a newly discovered chilly locale called Hoarfrost Reach.
7. NieR: Automata (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC)
NieR: Automata is an action RPG developed by PlatinumGames and published by Square Enix. The game was released for PlayStation 4 and PC in early 2017 and later an Xbox One port in June 2018. NieR: Automata is the sequel of NieR (2010), as spin-off sequel of the Drakengard series. Upon its release, NieR: Automata was met with positive reviews along with critics praising the game’s elements.
The story set in the midst of a proxy war between machines created by otherworldly invaders and the remnants of humanity. The story follows the battles of our main protagonist, a combat android, with her companion and a fugitive prototype. The gameplay combines RPG elements with action-based combat and mixed genre gameplay similar to that of NieR.

As a website that aggregates reviews of entertainment, including games, Metacritic has become one of a valuable source to know about certain game title. And as you can see, although it is not specifically made to review games, the games above are mostly the popular and well-known titles. My favorite would be Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age since I’m a fan of classic turn-based gameplay.
