The Japanese influence in RPG has introduced us to series like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. The great influence has made it to become a genre inside a genre, which we called JRPG or Japanese RPG. And as one of the most popular, all-rounder platform, PC also has the chance to own some of the best and everlasting JRPG. Here are 7 best PC turn-based RPG for you, if you are into this subgenre.
1. Chrono Trigger
Chrono Trigger is a legendary game from SNES which was developed initially in 1995. It has a good storyline, great battle system, and nice graphics that will pamper us RPG lovers. Although it is old enough, it still proves to exist in the modern platforms nowadays. Because of its popularity, Chrono Trigger is available in multiplatform, not only SNES but also PlayStation, DS, Android, iOS, and PC.
In this game, we will play as Crono, a swordsman from a small town who travels time to prevent the world from destruction caused by Lavos. A princess, a frog swordsman, a prehistoric blonde girl, and a robot will be your party members as you progress through the story. The battle system focuses on opening encounters, meaning that the enemies that we will fight can’t be seen in the field.
2. Grandia II
Grandia II is a RPG developed by Game Arts, originally for Dreamcast in 2000. The game was later ported to PlayStation 2, and later to PC exclusively in North America and Europe later that year. An enhanced port, based on the original Dreamcast version entitled Grandia II Anniversary Edition was released in 2015 for Steam. The high-definition remaster of the game will be released in 2019 for PC and Switch.
The game is set in a fantasy world thousands of years after a battle between Granas, the god of light, and Valmar, the god of darkness. In the aftermath of the battle, the Church of Granas has led humanity to prosperity by spreading the word of good. A young mercenary named Ryudo is charged to protect a songstress from the church named Elena who tries to reveals the secret of the church and the world’s history.
3. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky
The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky is a RPG developed by Nihon Falcom as part of The Legend of Heroes series. This game is also known as Trails in the Sky (First Chapter), which followed by Trails in the Sky SC and Trails in the Sky the 3rd. The game initially released in 2004 for PC (Japan) and later ported to PlayStation Portable in 2006. A high-definition port to the PlayStation 3 was released in 2012 in Japan.
The game takes place in Liberl Kingdom, 10 years after being invaded by the Erebonian Empire from the north. The story begins with the main protagonist, 11-year old Estelle Bright who was waiting for her father Cassius, to return home for the night. When he came, he brings back a boy named Joshua whom later grew up together with Estelle. Their journey after becoming bracers becomes a journey to save the world.
4. Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VII is without a doubt one of the greatest creations of Square Enix. There are too many reasons why this title is everlasting. The masterpiece of Square Enix emerged initially in 1997 on PlayStation, already more than a decade ago. Because of its timeless quality Square Enix decided to port the original version into Android, iOS, and PC while also preparing a remake of Final Fantasy VII on PlayStation 4.
We will play as Cloud, the main protagonist of Final Fantasy VII and the most popular persona among the RPG characters. Although he isn’t a silent protagonist, Cloud doesn’t speak too much at first. As a former SOLDIER’s proud swordsman, he became arrogant and selfish. But after he discovers about his past, he began to value friendship and starts protecting others, even the Planet.
5. Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy IX is the ninth main installment in Final Fantasy series which was developed and published by Squaresoft. It was initially released in July 2000 for PlayStation, and later re-released in 2016 for iOS, Android and Microsoft Windows via Steam, and the last re-released in 2017 for PlayStation 4.
The story follows Zidane and his companion of Tantalus Theatre Troupe kidnapping Princess Garnet of Alexandria whom coincidentally planned to escape the castle. Accompanied by her personal guard Steiner, they become comrades and travel together with Zidane to know the secrets of the Crystal and try to stop the malevolent force who intends to destroy their world.
6. The Last Remnant
The Last Remnant is a JRPG-styled game developed and published by Square Enix. It was released worldwide for Xbox 360 in 2008 and Microsoft Windows in 2009. The remastered version of the game was released near the end of 2018 for PlayStation 4. Back then, The Last Remnant was the first Square Enix game to use the Unreal Engine.
Rush Sykes, the main protagonist try to save his sister Irina with the help of his multi-racial teammates from the bad guys. By using ancient weapon and accessories called Remnants, Rush and the unions tries to stop The Conqueror who is trying to conquer the world under his command. This time, Rush must battle The Conqueror and his generals who also uses Remnant weapons and accessories.
7. Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age is a Japanese RPG developed and published by Square Enix. It is an entry of the long-running Dragon Quest series, and released initially in Japan (2017) for 3DS and PlayStation 4. Later on, it was released worldwide for PC and PlayStation 4 in 2018. Dragon Quest XI continues the gameplay of previous games in the series, now with the ability to explore high areas.
The game tells about the 16 year old main protagonist who grew up in a serene and quiet town. One day, when he participates in a certain village’s ceremony, he discovers that he is the reincarnation of a hero who has a great mission to save the world. Together with his allies: a child prodigy, a rude thief, and an entertainer he embarks on a journey trying to save his world from perils.

As a platform which has the most collection of multiplatform games, PC is always been my favorite. We just need town a decent PC to be able to play games from platform. And my favorite from the list would be The Last Remnant for the older turn-based RPG and Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age for the latter one. Thankfully, now PC has more arsenal of turn-based RPG which was console-only before.
