RPG has a lot to offer; from exploration, completing quest, into battling monsters, are the elements of RPG that fans adore so much. Even though fans adore all those elements, developers think that they should make an innovation to make this genre more interesting. So in this list you can find 5 RPG that successfully make an innovation to its elements and changed the genre forever.

5. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC)

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an action RPG developed and published by CD Projekt in 2015, based on The Witcher novels. In this third game of the series the developer totally making a revolution upon its world. We can find tons of quests from village, wood, and town areas. With all of its expansion packs and DLC, it is said that there is a gamer who able to complete the game in about 1800 hours.

Just like its two predecessors, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt played in an open world with a third-person perspective. We will control the main protagonist, Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter (or also known as witcher) who is looking for his missing adopted daughter on the run from the Wild Hunt, an otherworldly force determined to capture her and use her powers. Our main objective will be to save her.

4. Diablo II (PC)

Diablo II is an action role-playing hack-and-slash computer video game developed by Blizzard North and published by Blizzard Entertainment in 2000 for Microsoft Windows, Classic Mac OS, and macOS. The game, with its dark fantasy and horror themes, was designed by David Brevik and Erich Schaefer, who with Mac Schaefer acted as project leads on the game.

Set shortly after the events of Diablo, the player controls a new hero, attempting to stop the destruction unleashed by Diablo’s return. The game’s 5 acts feature a variety of locations and settings to explore and battle in, as well as an increased cast of characters to play as and interact with.

3. Dark Souls (Switch, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC)

Dark Souls is a 2011 action RPG developed by FromSoftware and published by Namco Bandai Games. The game is a spiritual successor to FromSoftware’s Demon’s Souls and act as the second installment in the Souls series. A port for Microsoft Windows was released in 2012, which featured additional content not seen in the original PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions.

Dark Souls takes place in the fictional kingdom of Lordran, where players assume the role of a cursed undead character who begins a pilgrimage to discover the fate of their kind. Historical events in its world and their significance are often implicit or left to player interpretation rather than being fully shown or explained.

2. Chrono Trigger (Android, iOS, DS, SNES, PlayStation, PC)

Chrono Trigger is a legendary game from SNES which was developed initially in 1995. It has a good storyline, great battle system, and nice graphics that will pamper us RPG lovers. Although it is old enough, it still proves to exist in the modern platforms nowadays. Because of its popularity, Chrono Trigger is available in multiplatform, not only SNES but also PlayStation, DS, Android, iOS, and PC.

In this game, we will play as Crono, a swordsman from a small town who travels time to prevent the world from destruction caused by Lavos. A princess, a frog swordsman, a prehistoric blonde girl, and a robot will be your party members as you progress through the story. The battle system focuses on opening encounters, meaning that the enemies that we will fight can’t be seen in the field.

1. World of Warcraft (PC)

World of Warcraft is a MMORPG released in 2004 by Blizzard Entertainment. It is the fourth released game set in the Warcraft fantasy universe. World of Warcraft was the world’s most popular MMORPG by player count of nearly ten million in 2009. Since launch, it has eight major expansion packs produced for it.

World of Warcraft takes place within the Warcraft world of Azeroth, approximately four years after the events at the conclusion of Blizzard’s previous Warcraft release, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. The gameplay of World of Warcraft is so appetizing with its reward system. We can find a lot of different races with their own specific skills in the vast world along with the beast and exclusive items in it.

Those games above are known as the stepping stone and a breakthrough of the series that changed the RPG genre forever. The innovation in each game is so interesting even some of them are known as timeless title. My favorite title will be an easy pick this time, as I adore classic RPG so much and I can find all the fun I need while playing Chrono Trigger.
