5 Horror RPG that Could Bring Nightmares into Your Sleep

RPG often related with the games such as Final Fantasy series or Tales series, but actually RPG is about the mechanism not the certain series. And what if the RPG mechanism combined with horror element? Since both of them have their own huge fanbase, it is a great idea to combine what is already popular. So here are the 5 best horror RPG that could bring nightmares into your sleep.

1. Darkest Dungeon (iOS, Switch, PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC)

Darkest Dungeon is a RPG developed by Red Hook Studios and published by Merge Games. The game was first released for Microsoft Windows and OS X in January 2016, which followed a year-long early access development period. Later that year, it was released for PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 4, and Linux, with ports for iOS being released in 2017, and Switch and Xbox One port a year after.

Darkest Dungeon has the player manage a roster of heroes to explore dungeons below a gothic mansion the player has inherited. The core feature of this game is the stress level of each hero that increases with further exploration and combat. A character sustaining a high-stress level may gain afflictions that will hamper or enhance their performance as an explorer.

2. Vampyr (Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC)

Vampyr is an action RPG developed by Dontnod Entertainment and published by Focus Home Interactive. It was released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on 5 June 2018 and for Nintendo Switch on 29 October 2019. The plot relates how Jonathan Reid, a doctor who has turned into a vampire, comes to term with his undead condition as he is torn between the two sides of himself.

3. Zanki Zero: Last Beginning (PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 4, PC)

Zanki Zero: Last Beginning is a dungeon crawling RPG developed and published by Spike Chunsoft. It was released for PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 4 in Japan, 2018 and PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Windows worldwide in 2019.

The story is set on island ruin after the destruction of the Earth, leaving behind eight people. Each chapter of the game focuses on a different character, which the player will be controlling. The player will fights enemies throughout the game, most of which being animals, which reward the players with the item upon defeat.

4. Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse (3DS)

Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse is a post-apocalyptic RPG developed and published by Atlus for Nintendo 3DS. It was released worldwide in 2016. The game is set in an alternate version of the universe in Shin Megami Tensei IV and forms part of the Shin Megami Tensei series, the central series of the Megami Tensei franchise.

The game’s silent protagonist is a Hunter Cadet named Nanashi. In post-apocalyptic Tokyo, Nanashi is killed by demons on a routine supply run, along with Nikkari and Manabu. In the afterlife, a demon named Dagda offers to resurrect him in exchange for his service as his Godslayer. Shortly afterward, the revived Nanashi and Asahi are manipulated into unsealing Krishna, a malevolent deity who intends to destroy the universe.

5. Parasite Eve (PlayStation, PlayStation Portable)

Parasite Eve is a 1998 action RPG developed and published by Square. The game is a sequel to the novel Parasite Eve, written by Hideaki Sena, and also the first game in the Parasite Eve series. Parasite Eve was SquareSoft’s first M-rated game, and the first major American and Japanese game development collaboration for the company.

The story follows New York City police officer Aya Brea over a six-day span in 1997 as she attempts t stop the Eve, a woman who plans to destroy human race through spontaneous human combustion. Players explore levels set in areas of New York while utilizing a pausable real-time combat system along with several RPG elements.

Both horror and and RPG sure have their own fanatic lover. As for horror genre, movies with horror theme usually loved by the audience. And we already know how huge the RPG fanbase is, with us included in it. Talking about a favorite, I might choose Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse, but since I have experienced the horror of Parasite Eve myself, I will choose this one instead.
