People know about RPG, but what about JRPG? The “J” in JRPG stands for Japanese, meaning it comes from Japan, and has some specific characteristic differ from the other RPG subgenre. As for smartphone, this device now is able to withstand the heavy performance of high quality games. So because of that reason, let me present you these 5 best recommended smartphone JRPG that have been released so far.

1. Chaos Rings III (Android, iOS)

Chaos Rings III is an RPG which was developed by Media.Vision and published by Square Enix in 2014. It became one of the most wanted games as soon as it reached Android, iOS, and PlayStation Vita. With the great name of Media.Vision (Wild Arms series) and Square Enix (Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts series), you will know that this game will not disappoint you.

In this game, we will play as a young man named Nasca who has a dream to continue his father’s footsteps as an adventurer across galaxies. Same with the other RPG, in this game you will be doing world exploration, collecting items, and defeating monsters. Even though this game is made for mobile devices, the graphics is as stunning as the other Square Enix’s products.

2. Final Fantasy IX (Android, iOS)

Final Fantasy IX is the ninth main installment in Final Fantasy series which was developed and published by Squaresoft. The story follows Zidane and his companion of Tantalus Theatre Troupe kidnapping Princess Garnet of Alexandria whom coincidentally planned to escape the castle. Accompanied by her personal guard Steiner, they become comrades and travel together with Zidane to know the secrets of the Crystal and try to stop the malevolent force who intends to destroy their world.

As a strategy/tactical RPG, it is a simple game with interesting gameplay where we need to form an army of soldiers led by generals. Every general will have special abilities to form stronger troops. Langrisser Mobile will be divided into scenarios, each with its own story and interactions in battles.

Bladebound is an action RPG published by Artifex Mundi for Android and iOS. The story is about a kingdom that has been overrun by darkness caused by an evil regime. As the main character it is our duty save the kingdom, with us also being the last capable one from Bladebound. We can unleash combos infused with 6 elements as well as using 150 selections of swords and armors that we can choose.

Shin Megami Tensei: Liberation Dx2 is a Japanese RPG developed by Atlus and Sega for mobile Android and iOS. Dx2 is an entry in the Shin Megami Tensei series, act more as a subseries of the whole series. The game was initially released in January 2018 in Japan, Taiwan, Macau, and Hong Kong but later released worldwide. The game was first introduced with VR presentation during Tokyo Game Show.

The story follows the player who is a member of the secret Liberators organization, a group with members gaining the ability to control demon-like beings, based in Akihabara, Japan. There are two warring factions in this game, the Liberators and the Acolytes. The Liberators are tasked to prevent the Acolytes from targeting civilian members of the public who have high empathy.

You may have underestimated smartphone JRPG before, but now with those games you don’t have any chance even to complain about it. As a classic JRPG addict, I choose Another Eden: The Cat Beyond Time and Space as the turn-based RPG and Langrisser Mobile for the strategy RPG. Both implement classic JRPG mechanics, each with its own advantages in the subgenres.
