The Banner Saga is a fantasy tactical RPG developed by Stoic Studio and published by Versus Evil. This game was initially released in 2014 for PC gamer but also aimed for mobile gamer. Later on, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One were released in 2016 while the Nintendo Switch version released in 2018.
The game takes place in a fictional world inspired by Norse mythology and tells the story of the player’s caravan as a whole, as they combat a warlike race named Dredge that despises humans. The game will follows two playable characters, each having their own story which eventually will emerges into one. The game features an interactive story which changes depending on players’ decisions.
2. The Banner Saga 2
The Banner Saga 2 is a sequel to The Banner Saga and the second part of the trilogy. Just like before, this game was developed by Stoic Studio and published by Versus Evil in 2016. The Banner Saga 2 builds on the prior game’s turn-based battle, adding introduction of new units, new talents, new enemies, interactive object and new objectives. This game also introduces The Horseborn, a centaur-like race.
Evoland is an adventure RPG developed by Shiro Games, a French video game development company. This game was initially released for PC and OS X in 2013, but later also released for Android and iOS in 2015. This game was inspired by the gameplay of legendary games such as The Legend of Zelda, Diablo, and Final Fantasy. This game retraces the history of RPG in a form of an adventure game.
What is really unique about this game is that Evoland gameplay is based on the evolution of the video games. When players start this game, the game will only shows us a very minimum graphics. But as the story goes and through the adventure, we will unlock new graphics, new technologies, and new gameplay until we reach the latest HD age and 3D world.
Oceanhorn is an action RPG developed by Cornfox & Bros. for Android operating system. This game is known for its quality in both gameplay and graphics. We will play as a young boy who tries to find his father. The only clue left is an old notebook along with mysterious necklace. To find his father, we will travel the Uncharted Seas while uncovers the mystery of Arcadia Kingdom and sea monsters Oceanhorn.
Postknight is a mobile RPG developed by Kurechii, a Malaysian indie game developer and was released in 2017. The story follows the adventures of a postknight, who is tasked with a dangerous missions and deliveries in the grand kingdom of Kurestal. As a postknight, he must fight his way past enemies such as wolves and bandits.
Through deliveries, the postknight will meet other characters with different backgrounds while venturing across the kingdom of Kurestal and beyond. For every successful mission, players receive rewards which can be used to upgrade armor and weapon. Everytime the characters level up, we can increase the character’s ability in 4 areas: strength, agility, intelligence, and vitality.

With the adventure element, the stress level isn’t too high as we still have some freedom to explore the world, especially for the last three games. I choose Evoland as my favorite, since it has a very unique concept and the classic gamer will understand it easier as they experienced the RPG history themselves.
