7. Valkyria: Azure Revolution
There’s a growing trend in the RPG realm of a more action oriented gameplay to which the market demands. Not only the new release, some games even alter its turn based or strategy mechanics into a more dynamic gameplay. Valkyria Chronicle sequel is one of them. Famous for its distinguished turn based strategy approach, Valkyria: Azure Revolution will provide gamers with more hack and slash style. Not to fret though, since based on its gameplay preview, strategy still play an important role in the gameplay. The artworks and character’s sheer beauty, plus the intricate storyline, give us enough reason to add it to our collection. 6. Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age
Square Enix has announced another remastered version of Final Fantasy (not that we object). Though personally I really want a Final Fantasy VIII remastered, they’re giving us Vaan and other memorable characters from Final Fantasy XII instead. Final Fantasy XII was famous for its unique battle system which closer to the newly released Final Fantasy XV than most of the ‘classic’ Final Fantasy series. Also, the pastel character design reminds us of Vagrant Story. Not to mention tons of side quest, including an almost impossible battle against giant tortoise and earth dragon. The remastered version not only has improved graphic and cut scenes, but also an autosave feature and new BGM. Get ready to return to the world of Ivalice! Kindly check everything about this game here.
5. Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue
As the successor of Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 and 2.5 ReMIX, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue is another compilation which consists of three titles: Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance HD, Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A Fragmentary Passage-, and Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover. 4. Horizon Zero Dawn
Bad ass heroine: Check. Open world environment: Check. Customizable weapon and equipment: Check. Giant dinosaur robot: Check. What else do you expect from Horizon: Zero Dawn? Pretty sure you’ve been captivated since the first trailer came out, when they showed Aloy fighting against a mechanical T-rex, with a measly bow and arrow! The contrast of Aloy prehistoric appearance and cybertron-ish adversaries, really intrigued gamers worldwide. Wait no longer, since Guerilla Games will publish Horizon: Zero Dawn between February 2017 and early March 2017, and it’s available for pre-order earlier this month. 3. Dragon Quest XI: In Search of Departed Time
As one of the longstanding franchise in RPG industry, every single title of Dragon Quest will always be something worthy enough to wait for. When Nintendo finally confirmed that Dragon Quest XI will also available on Switch, the hype goes up even more. Other than the latest installment of Legend of Zelda series, perhaps this is the other series fans all over the world eager to play on the newly Switch platform. The 3DS version offers a different feature than the PS4 version, where players may switch to 3D or 2D screens anytime during the play. ORCA will be responsible for PS4 version development, while Toylogic working on the 3DS version. Dragon Quest XI: In Search of Departed Time is set to be released in Japan some time in 2017. 2. Persona 5
Take on a role of silent protagonist, a high school student leading the Phantom Thieves of Hearts. Explore otherworldly Palace and fight hostile Shadows, stealing corruption from hearts of adults in order to reform the city.
Late September 2016, Persona 5 was the fastest selling game in Persona series in Japan, recorded 337k copies in only three days. As per early October 2016, over 400k copies have been sold through. That numbers made Persona 5 simply the best selling game released in Japan in Atlus history. Originally set to be released in late 2014, the game was delayed in order to be further improved. Now the long waiting has finally paid off, as the selling number speaks for itself. Atlus confirmed Persona 5 is exclusive for PS3 and PS4 only. Worldwide release of Persona 5 is due on April 2017. You can check more about Persona 5 here.
1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
As a franchise that has been running for over 30 years, The Legend of Zelda never cease to amaze its fans all over the world. In this latest installment, the story revolves around Link who awakens from his deep, long slumber to be guided to the ruined Hyrule Kingdom. The kingdom is said to be destroyed by Calamity Ganon, who is now sealed and trapped within the kingdom. Link must hurry and defeat it before it breaks free and bring annihilation to the world.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild marks a major development from its predecessors. The introduction of open world environment and latest physics engine delayed the launch for two years, but certainly worth it. The game received rapturous reactions from fans and critics, and also won the Most Anticipated Game award at The Game Awards 2016. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be launched on March 3, 2017. Follow more updates on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild here.
That sums up my top 10 upcoming RPG in 2017. Based on the titles set to be released this year, 2017 surely will be festive year for us RPG fans. The launching of Nintendo Switch on March 3 adds another positivity to our expectation. I do hope we can also get the release of Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy VII remake this year, although the possibility is quite slim for now. Please let me know if there’s upcoming game you think should be on the list, in case I’ve missed it.
