The trapped on a tropical island or killing each other to survive are the themes that we often met in many storytelling. Say hello to both of those themes in Super Danganronpa 2. What made Super Danganronpa 2 story unique is every student in this school are special. Each has their own different super talent at something.
Below is the game trailer.
Hajime Hinata, an amnesiac high school boy who has just become one of Hope’s Peak Academy’s ‘Ultimate’ students, alongside fifteen others. He and the others were taken to a remote tropical island called Jabberwock with no memory about how they were gathered there. Their alleged teacher, a small, rabbit-like mascot named Usami, claims it to be a simple field trip.
However, Monokuma suddenly takes over, defeating Usami and announces that they are stuck on the island for life unless they can murder another student and get away with it. Monokuma naming it Killing School Trip. Each time a murder happened, they all will have to conduct and attend a Class Trial to determine the culprit. If the students successfully determine a murderer in a Class Trial, that culprit alone will be executed, but if they make the wrong assumption, then the killer walks home free while everyone else is sentenced to death.
In the main story, player will take control of Hajime Hinata and will do investigations to discover the truth.
I feel the story is very well executed. From the intro at the beginning to climax till the conclusion. The plot twist and the thrill didn’t fail to amuse me, even makes me forget about my surroundings. I have played the first Danganronpa and I feel this second Danganronpa is deeper than the previous one in terms of relationship between classmates and gameplay. I like the interactions, or when each time they mourn to the fallen. Overall, I enjoy it very much. It gives a long lasting memory to me.
There are several gameplays in this game: Main Story, Magical Miracle Girl ★ Monomi, Island mode, and Novel.
First, about Main Story, it consist of Prologue, Chapter 1-6, and Epilogue. Chapters also divided into several parts: The Beginning, Deadly Life (Investigation part), and Class Trial.
The player controls the main protagonist, Hajime Hinata. Hajime is able to walk around the Jabberwock Island in 2D (mostly). Other than conversations in visual novel appearance, Super Danganronpa 2 main feature is point and click. Player will control Hajime and move a pointer to a certain location on a screen and then press them.
In Investigation part, the player will control Hajime to gather clues and investigating some mysteries in a serious professional/semi-professional way. Finding Truth Bullets from a crime scene that are neccessary things for Class Trial. After all clues had been discovered, then the story will immediately progress to Class Trial.
Within the trial, the player must complete several mini-games to continue the flow of the trial. The main components are as follows:
Over the course of the trial, all students present will give assertions. Certain phrases will be highlighted, these are “weak points”. Player task is to either refute or agree with the character statement by using Truth Bullets. The Truth Bullets are the pieces evidence that you accumulated during the investigation.
Player going inside Hajime mind to select certain letters to complete the phrase or word. Letters will float around the screen and can be shot to fill in the blank. Certain letters must be hit more than once to be captured. When the player completes the word/phrase, the trial resumes.
Panic Talk Action
This is when a character refuses to give up a certain condition, whether it be admitting to being the culprit, defending another character, or refusing evidence, the player must negate the assertions. The player will have to break down the opponent shields with a tempo like a rhythm game.
Once the shields are down, you must present your argument. Instead of presenting a Truth Bullet, you must combine four words which appear in the top, bottom, left and right of the screen. If the phrase is right, it will tear your opponent’s argument to shreds. If your phrase is wrong, you must continue to break down the opponent shields again.
At this phase, after Hajime has found a weak point, a student suddenly intercept with a counter argument. The player will enter a battle of wits. You must cut through their opponent’s statements using the d-pad or by swiping the touch screen (for ps vita). The screen will shift depending on who the argument is currently favoring. At the end of a sequence, if the argument is going in favor of Hajime, the showdown will advance to the next sequence. If the argument is going in the way of his opponent, he takes damage and retreats to the previous sequence in the argument. If neither student in particular is winning the argument, then a Cross Swords will begin, where the player needs to tap the button repeatedly to advance, or they will be pushed back.
Much like in nonstop debates, weak points are scattered through the showdown. The player must hit the correct weak point with the correct Truth Blade to end the showdown.
Logic Dive is a snowboarding minigame, in which players steer Hajime and have to avoid any obstacles and pitfalls along the way. After a while multiple choice will pop up on the screen and player must choose the answer route based on a question given, in order to arrive at a logical conclusion. If failed, Hajime will take damage and will have to redo near the place he failed. Watch out for Life. Also need to arrive at logical conclusion within time period.
As the name implies, this is the climax of the Trial. Several panels of images will appear, each depicting different elements of the murder. Player task is to compile the missing images, placing them into the right order, like a manga page.
Outside of minigames, the player is required to answer questions related to the case at hand. This typically comes in four different forms:
- Multiple choice questions
- Presenting the correct Truth Bullet
- Pointing out who’s the culprit or most suspicious person is
- Pointing out something suspicious at the crime scene or another relevant location
Overall, it’s not that hard because even if you fail, you can always redo immediately.
Now about the other gameplay. Magical Miracle Girl ★ Monomi is Monomi’s adventure in defeating the island bosses to unlock the next island, Monomi actually told about it happened behind the scene in the main story.
Basically, the player will take control of Monomi in defeating monsters. To defeat them, Monomi will have to circle around the enemies and defeat them all within a period of time. Damaging enemies will increase Monomi’s gauge (bottom left) and then it can be used to released her magical power for a short time. Defeated enemies will drop useful items such as foods to increase health, clock to extend the time and gold bar.
Monomi can jump around to evade attacks. However, circling around enemies nonstop will tire Monomi. So player must take a note about that, because tired Monomi will make a stop for a while, making her vulnerable to enemies attack.
Island mode is what supposed to happen if the main story didn’t happen. It’s just a simple school trip and happy occasion. Character lives will not be in danger. Player just need to collect all the Hope Fragments to leave the island. Hope Fragments are simply gained by spending time together with classmates. The time limit will be 50 days and the player is free to spend them alone or with whoever they want. However, befriending with classmates will gain useful skill.
Each time player will be given Class Goal to complete within a period of time. There are three main activities to do: Collect, Clean, and Rest. Like the name suggests, Collect is to collect materials, Clean is to raise your cleanliness (don’t let it drop to 0), and Rest is to take a break to restore HP.
The player will have to assign a task to each character to complete that Class goal while also paying attention to characters HP, Collection Level, and Cleaning Level. Healthy characters will be more productive. It’s very easy to complete the task because the necessary materials will be marked with a flag. And no need to worry because you won’t get a penalty for failing to make the item.
When player complete Class Goal, player will receive Trip tickets from Usami. And then that ticket can be used to take a trip together with a classmate to increase love meter.
Island mode is the best time to spend time with characters you didn’t get the chance in the Main Story.
As for Novel, player will simply progress through it by reading and clicking like a regular digital novel.
The main protagonist. He is a realist person and genuinely cares about everyone. Along the game, player will see his piece of hair which is sticking out from the top of the head will move according to his emotions. He originally had no talent, but thanks to Chiaki he was finally able to overcome despair and gain true confidence.
Ultimate Gamer. Chiaki normally has a calm and quiet personality and sometimes even looks sleepy. But she becomes a lot more lively whenever discussing about games. She’s very analytical and actively contribute many thoughts in every class trials. However, Chiaki often ends her sentences with “I think” or “Maybe”.
Ultimate Lucky Student. Nagito first comes off as a polite and friendly that always flashing his carefree smile. But after the first class trial, he was revealed to have a twisted obsession with hope that others don’t even understand him anymore. Luck on his side was super unbelievable and it was shown many times during the story.
Ultimate Princess. Sonia is a cheerful and polite girl with a great interest for Japanese culture and occult. She is very kind and thoughtful, and cares deeply for her friends. She is also rather naive but can shout out loud when she is upset or in trouble. She is rather calm during all this killing game.
Ultimate Musician. She has an excellent hearing just as her talent suggest and her hearing had helped the investigation. She is very energetic and quirky. She forgets things quite quickly. She also tends to scream when she’s panic.
Ultimate Imposter. He had to survive by becoming someone else because he felt that his own life had no meaning. During chapter 6, he speaks briefly without disguise and it’s implied that his real nature is polite and slightly shy. When Hajime spend time with him, he finally accept and wish to live as his true self.
Ultimate Yakuza. Despite having a babyface and short and petite stature, he comes off as rude to the other students on the island, often using foul words. He claims he’s not going to play at being friends with anyone. However, he changed after one class trial changed his life, Fuyuhiko became more sociable and avoided bad-mouthing people.
Ultimate Gymnast. Akane has a fiery personality and she loves fighting, and that’s why she gets along very well with Nekomaru and respect him for being physically strong. However, she is very lazy and unmotivated. Akane’s mood can swift very quickly. She can bounce between bored, to happy, to angry, and to happy again. She seems to think that punching things is the best way to solve problems. Akane is also extremely fond of eating.
Ultimate Breeder. Gundham has an eccentric and somewhat dark personality. Along the story, Gundham is often lost in his own little world, usually paying more attention to himself or his hamsters than the things that are going on around him. He often claims that he has been blessed with the evil powers of the underworld, and refers to everyone else as ‘pathetic human beings’.
Ultimate Swordswoman. Peko comes off as a very serious and stern woman who shows little to no emotions. She sees herself as not a human being, but rather as a tool, with her only purpose in living being to protect and follow the orders of Fuyuhiko.
Ultimate Team Manager. He frequently shouts when speaking. But unlike his scary and bulging appearance, he’s actually very kind and supportive. He’s sensitive at heart even to the point can easily cry.
Ultimate Photographer. Mahiru has high expectations of men and she can be harsh towards them. She is a sensible person and not afraid to speak her mind. She has a policy of never erase a photo once she take it. And her photos have been proven helping in investigation.
Ultimate Mechanic. Kazuichi is a highly emotional character, though he tries to play it smooth and acts carefree at first. He is normally trying to repair any broken items on the island with his ability and familiarity with mechanisms. He tends to carry around a spanner/wrench and he turns anxious if he cannot tinker with something. He likes Sonia to an extent of being a pervert. Everytime he shown sympathizes to the fallen.
Ultimate Nurse. She has a very low self-esteem, easily intimidated, cries easily, apologizes a lot, and stutters over words. She constantly worries about bothering, boring, or offending others. Because her personality is like that, she often gets bullied verbally by Hiyoko.
Ultimate Cook. Teruteru is very lewd and usually can be seen hitting on anyone near him regardless of the gender, often to the point of sexual harassment. He will react to the slightest innuendo that surfaces in a conversation, even in Class Trial. When extremely agitated, Teruteru loses his normal speech pattern and breaks down, yelling angrily in an incomprehensible, country-like dialect.
Ultimate Traditional Dancer. Hiyoko has a cute appearance, voice, and (initially) her way of talking give off the impression she is innocent and childlike. However, in her introduction alone at the beginning, she herself quickly revealed that she is cruel with a malicious side. But she quickly becomes attached to Mahiru after the latter helps Hiyoko take a shower and shows her how to tie her obi.
Claim himself as Monomi’s big brother. His whole body is divided by the center into two parts, resembling the Yin-Yang symbol). At times, Monokuma would show his good side, but would turn to his bad side when he is angry. He dislikes people who don’t obey him, and will threaten those who oppose his command. Not even showing merciful towards Monomi.
Also known by her full name, “Magical Girl Miracle ★ Usami”. Monomi is gentle and kindhearted, but also very naive and not very smart. She is afraid of violence and very childish. While she is strict about rules and certain other things, it’s very easy to trick her. Her name and appearance were changed from Usami when Monokuma appear and break her magic wand.
Everyone has a nice character development throughout the story. It was spectacular to see. Their distinct personality making the interaction and storyline nice to follow. I can say that the character development here is better than the first Danganronpa.
Graphic & Sound
The game is combining between 2D and 3D graphic. The characters are in 2D. Some scenes limiting the camera rotation because of the 2D graphic. But personally, that didn’t make this game less enjoyable.
The music is generic but nice. It also has nostalgic soundtracks from first Danganronpa. Super Danganronpa 2 has dual audio too which is nice.
The character art style might feel a bit unappealing and some backgrounds have a harsh shadow style. The pink blood might also feel weird.
There is no DLC for Super Danganronpa 2. Which is good because the game already has many gameplays like Magical Miracle Girl ★ Monomi, Island Mode, and Novel. If the developer turned them all into DLC, it might drop the play value, just personal opinion of course.
After player cleared the first playthrough, player can start any chapter from the Beginning of the chapter or start from Deadly Life (investigate case) or from Class Trial or just check Class Trial high score.
In Extra section, there are Event Gallery, Movie Gallery, Artwork Gallery, Sound Gallery, Monomono Yachine, and Vending Machine. They will be unlocked after player had seen them. All things can be viewed or listen to in exchange for Monocoins. Monocoins can be obtained from clearing Class Trials. The amount of Monocoins you’ll get is based on how you perform in Class Trial.
Vending Machine is used to buy available items for present. Meanwhile, Monomono Yachine will get you random items based on how much coins you put it in. The more coins you put, the rarer the item.
Player also have pet from e-Handbook. It will grow based on the steps Hajime taken. And it can also fall into despair if not getting cleaned. Player can give item as present to pet to increase hope meter or to character player spent time with.
All the skills, presents, level, steps, etc will be transferred over to the second playthrough and so on. Making each replay will be a lot easier than before, because level and skills matters a lot. I’m not saying it’s not worth the replay but there’s no new added difficulty. So even if you play in Mean mode (the hardest mode) it will feel a lot easier on second playthrough. I personally go through Mean mode just fine in first playthrough.
+ Engaging story

Super Danganronpa 2 got a score 84% from Metacritic and 8/10 from Destructoid!. Ratings from these websites are taken when this review is being written.
In my opinion, Super Danganronpa 2 is something like Ace Attorney mixed with Zero Escape vibe. Trials and trapped in a life and death situation. If you’re a fan of those games, then don’t miss out this game. Even better feeling if you have played the first Danganronpa. The story is so engaging and you will also see the combination of 2D and 3D. Aside from the unappealing character art style, this game is definitely a masterpiece and worth the money.
