Dragon Quest Builders is a sandbox game from popular JRPG, Dragon Quest. This spin-off still made by Square Enix. This game is very much looks alike Minecraft game where you could build many things with blocks and materials. This game really draw my attention when I played the demo even though I just did for fun, but here I am, played the full the game until the end. For your information I played this on Playstation Vita.
You can watch the trailer below:
Generations ago, the realm of Alefgard was plunged into darkness by the terrible and treacherous Dragonlord, ruler of all monsters. Mankind was robbed of the power to build and forced to wander the ruins of their former home, scrounging and scavenging in the dust to survive.
You will played as Hero/Heroine, a legendary builders that could build anything from the scratch. You will meet many survivors and help them to return the power of creation to the people and rebuild Alefgard. Only when the wonder of imagination has been returned will mankind be able to overthrow the evil Dragonlord.
This is the first time Dragon Quest series I ever played. There some easter eggs about previous DQ but it still make me enjoy the story. The story is quite short, there are only 4 four chapters in this game. Each chapter I will met new people to help them as quest. However there only main quest that linked to the story.
This game has quiet many NPC I could meet in every town. Sometimes the NPCs would give me bunch of quests and some NPCs could join us in the battle. After I befriended with them, they could create many items for me, even though it’s random and sometime useless.
If you ever played Minecraft game, than you will really familiar with the gameplay here. I built a room out of blocks, the room gains levels based on how much it has been built up. The Hero/Heroine has a health bar, and must eat food over time, similar to Minecraft. The game also features a crafting system by accessing workbenches. New crafting recipes can be discovered as the player progresses through the story, as well as acquiring new resources.
This game has four chapters and as usual game progress we will advance to the next chapter after finished one. But in this game, I could replay each chapter without playing the previous chapter because I could make different save slot for each chapter.
The game also features a day/night cycle which affects the type of monsters that appear as well as their ferocity. Monsters can attack what the player has built and lower the town’s Base Level as a result. Monsters such as Slime and Dragon from the original Dragon Quest appear in the game. Sometime, many monsters would attack the town and I had to defeat them fast in order to save the town.
GRAPHIC AND SOUND
The graphic in the PSVita is not as great as the PS4 one as usual. It still great, though. The environment still eye-catching to see. As the frame rate it’s quite stable and smooth when I wander in the field and in the battle.
The music is quite nostalgic for DQ fans. Even I, who never played DQ before knew some music from DQ series. The music is really good for the simulation game like this.
There is some unique theme in each chapter as I go to new city. Like second chapter has tropical island theme and chapter 3 has desert and snow theme. The monster will change too as I moved too and matched the theme. And also materials and resources fit with the environment too, it made me to change place now and then to collect items I need. In other word, DQ Builders has dynamic theme in every place so it never made me bored.
Like I said before, we could make different save slot for each chapter. We could replay any chapter whenever we want. Therefore we couldn’t miss anything and could finish anything without replaying the whole chapter.
+ Has many funny characters and dialogues.
+ No limit in building.
– Story and main quest too short
– Night time is quite annoying.
FINAL SCORE: 3.45/5
I never played Dragon Quest neither Minecraft but i really enjoyed this game. We could build a town, craft items and fight with the monsters. The colorful environment never made me bored to play this game again and again, there’s so much fun in this game. This game is really masterpiece for sandbox RPG.
